as part of a side trip while I'm in Germany visiting friends. I leave Tuesday for Germany, I'm excited to be going across the pond, it will be my first time to Europe. We have a weekend trip to Barcelona Spain planned and now I'm rethinking it. My husband just Monday was telling me that he was in Barcelona as part of a military presence several years ago because of violence in Spain, but he felt it was fine now.
And now I wake up to this awful bombing in Madrid. I'm going through that "on the one hand" conversation in my head right now. You know the one where you think about 9-11 here and how New York suffered so terribly not only by the tragedy but by the loss of tourism dollars as well and how New York begged people to come back, the Bali bombings was the same way. On the other hand though I have two young children that I don't believe I should take a risk because of, (there not on the trip its just me going to visit some friends) I suppose I'll check and see what the State Department is recommending.

Only you can make the choice but I would still go. I think living in Europe we become alot more accustomed to this kind of thing going on, not that it's any less horrific or scary, but we travelled a month after 9/11. It may sound harsh but in our family if anything like this happens we just say it HAS happened and move on. As you say your State Department will advise you.

We are off to Southern Spain later in the year.

If you do go, have fun!

I am from Barcelona ( living in the U.S but lived in Barcelona till I was 25 ) , and people are used to terrorist attacks but not of this magnitude. I can tell you that you will be safer now that you could have been before, security will be raised everywhere. I would go to Barcelona without a problem. Take it from me.

I think I would still go, though I would be super-nervous. I'm sure that once you get there, though, you will forget about it for the most part. After all, what's done is done, and they haven't been very successful at repeating their M.O.'s. It's such a sad state we're living in now, and I'm a little disappointed that these overseas attacks dont make bigger news in the U.S.
