Right now Mars is on it's way to being closer to earth than it has in 70,000 years or so. I hadn't heard about this until on a flight late last night the pilot mentioned it and directed us to look out the window. Mars was incredibly bright with a distinct reddish glow at 35,000 ft. Would have loved to have had a telescope handy but I generally don't carry one with me.
Those in the south may get a chance to view a rare Mars/Moon eclipse tomorrow or the next day (July 16-17) according to this article
