I am getting way too concerned about making this simple for extended family and I think that I am just confusing myself.

Okay, for example, if I make reservations at OKW at 11-month window, then at 7-month window add a night to this OKW reservation using SSR points would those be separate reservations (with the possibility of needing to check out, back in) or would it just be a modification of the original reservation?

I hope and assume the latter, but ?

If I'm understanding your concern, at the 7 month window you would just be adding on days to your reservation - no matter where the points are from - therefore there would be no need for checking out first.

It might be either way, depending on how you and MS do it. The easiest would be to simply add another day onto the original reservation. This would be the same as those who book a reservation day by day and simply add another day on one at a time.

You could also just let it be a separate reservation, and then link the two reservations so you don't have to check-out/check-in, or move. Effectively it would be the same as if it were all one reservation.

If for any reason you want to change how the points are used, such as changing some of your current OKW points to be SSR points at the 7-month window, then you would first have to cancel your existing reservation, then make a new one. The danger here is that if they cancel the 1st reservation, and there's a wait list for what you want, then there might not be availability to rebook.

They could easily check before they cancelled to make sure it wouldn't be a problem.

Bottom line, if you're going to keep the original days using your OKW points and just add another day using SSR points, MS can do that by just extending the reservation, subject of course to availability.
