If it's real HOT outside how COOL do you keep your house with AC of course?

Wow, you guys would melt in our house. Guess we're cheap. We live in Atlanta, so it's hot and humid. Mid-90's air temp and I don't even know what humidity level is, but it's high. We set a/c at 80 during the day and 77 at night. We have ceiling fans in all the bedrooms and just have them on low to give a gentle breeze. 77, dry air and gentle breeze is perfectly good sleeping weather.
Yes, I would.

I don't live that far from you.

Ours is set on 72 during the day. And at 70 at night. If I am doing anything around the house, I drop the temp a couple of degrees.

We don't have central air, just a window a/c at the top of the stairs. The upstairs of course is where the heat really collects, so having it up there helps the girls' bedrooms considerably. Our bedroom is far away from it, but we have a ceiling fan and the downstairs doesn't get so bad. We both grew up without any a/c so we are accustomed to it. We could put another one in our bedroom, but we've done that before and had it rain in through it onto the carpet so we try to get along without it. It is mid-90s this week with high humidity but we slept fine last night.

I haven't checked but I wouldn't be surprised if it was over 80 in our downstairs most of the time.

Even if we put in central air, there is only one vent upstairs so we'd still have to have the window a/c in anyway.

This. Lol. I'm like, almost 80 degrees?! What's the point of an AC? Very interesting. It gets bloody miserable down here in TN, with the 95+ days and humidity. Open windows means bugs and never ending waves of heat. If I wanted that, I'd just go outside :confused3

But apparently A LOT of people leave their thermostat at higher temps, so I dunno. Maybe it's us!! Haha

Well, not everyone likes it cold. Where we live there's a big problem with electrical supply and we often have "flex-alerts" in the summer. That's when we're asked to keep our AC at 78 or higher.

As I said, in our house, we only prefer that the inside, cooled air be cooler than the 90+ degrees it is outside. We tried various temps when we moved in and found that 83 is the temperature that works for us.

Maybe I messed something up internally then living in super cold climates for too long. Freezer burn:crazy: I will say we keep our heat set at 64 during the winter...until the pipes freeze under the trailer...and then we are forced to crank it up to 80 all day to heat the belly to make them thaw. I thought we were all going to die last time we did that.

And yet...we are going to Orlando in August:tongue:

It averages about 105 out. We keep the house around 75. We're paying dearly for it, though. Our last bill was over $700:crazy2:

We are in the upper 90's right now. We keep ours at 76 during the day, and a little cooler at night. Unfortunately our 2nd story doesn't get that cool. It would be far too expensive for us to try to keep it any cooler.

I live in NC. The same weather. The thing is at 78 in the house, you are still 15 degrees or more cooler than outside. And you are saving on energy and $$. I can't imagine what people's electric bills look like at 68 degrees on a 98 day. It must run constantly.

74-75 during the day... 72-3 at night.
It is HOT and humid here.

I couldn't even imagine trying to keep my house at 68-70 on a hot summer day.
That would actually feel 'freezing' to anyone coming in out of the heat.
And, I think it would freeze up our heat and air unit!!!

When the summer heat first hit, my DS came in one day and said 'it's cold in here..." And I said, no, it's 75'... it's just HOT outside!!!!

Have to laugh at anyone who could mention leaving the window open at night...
NO air moves here in the South after sunset.
It is HOT and very very humid.
And the lovely 'night sounds' are cicadas, and they are deafening... actually have been measured at levels similar to that of a lawn mower that can compromise hearing!!!!

78? 80? :crazy2: Opening the Windows? Omg. I can't imagine opening the windows. That would be like turning on the oven and opening the door.

This thread has me questioning if there is something wrong with my nervous system or something:confused3

Nope... probably nothing wrong... I agree with you!

The funny thing is, though... I actually do have some autonomic nervous system issues.
I am not tolerant of extreme temperatures at all. (as this controls the body's temperature and response to heat and cold)
I don't usually wear much more than a tank top on hot days...
And carry a jacket when it go in grocery stores, even when it is 90' outside.
They keep the grocery stores very cool here, and the cooler and freezer sections actually feel like winter to my arms!!!

When your province exports a ton of electricity, you get super cheap rates..hence the love of a/c

We keep it at 75 during the day when we're a work and at night an 72 when we're at home. I refuse to be miserably hot in my house!

I live in southeastern MA and keep my central AC to 72-73. My hubs and I rofl when we got the call from National Grid urging customers to keep their AC in the high 70s.

I'd be ok with the A/C at 75 if I never had to do anything in the house. But when ours was out last week and the temp ran 77 to 80 in the house all day, I really couldn't do anything without dripping in sweat. Maybe it was the humidity here, but I just didn't find that remotely comfortable for doing anything. I even put a ban on running the dryer or stove top.

And yes, the bill is high. But I refuse to set the temp where I sweat doing average household chores.

It's been a hot summer and we've had the a/c on way more than usual. Someone is home all the time, or we would be able to turn it up higher.
We started out this summer keeping it at 74 during the day, as we got used to that, we started keeping it at 75, and this week we bumped it up to 76. We have to try to save some money on the bill!
At night we keep it at 70 so that its bearable upstairs for sleeping.

We use budget billing so it averages the amount over the year and charges a flat monthly. We have gas heat and there are several month out of the year in spring and fall where nothing is running. Also our place is only 1100 sq. feet. It really isn't that bad.
