If it's real HOT outside how COOL do you keep your house with AC of course?

My roommates and I have one major conflict, and it's the thermostat. We agreed on 74F as a compromise last summer, but now one of them is wanting it to be set higher, like 77F. She doesn't realize that in the other two bedrooms (the ones that aren't hers), it's 5 degrees hotter than the rest of the house because we're over the garage AND on the side of the house where the sun sets.

72F would be my preference. And I'd still run all three of my fans.

We're expecting temps over 100 again this weekend with even higher heat indexes. We keep the thermostat at 70 when we're home. in the hottest parts of the day it'll get up to 72 in the house though...even though we have a 2 year old unit it just can't always keep up with the high temp outside.

I'm in NJ and it's in the upper 90s this week. My AC is set to 70 the entire summer. I have an equal payment plan so having the higher usage in the summer doesn't hit me so hard.

I keep my heat on 68 in the winter and the winter cracked open in my bedroom.

I hate being hot and uncomfortable!

Wow, you guys would melt in our house. Guess we're cheap. We live in Atlanta, so it's hot and humid. Mid-90's air temp and I don't even know what humidity level is, but it's high. We set a/c at 80 during the day and 77 at night. We have ceiling fans in all the bedrooms and just have them on low to give a gentle breeze. 77, dry air and gentle breeze is perfectly good sleeping weather.

For the main part of the house, we don't turn the ac on unless it gets very hot out, like over 90 for a couple days. Our house tends to heat up slowly so one day of heat doesn't make the house uncomfortable. When we do turn it on, we put it at 76. We always turn it off before we go to bed. But, in the bedrooms we all have separate ac units and ours goes on every night during the summer. Dh puts out at 72. I hate it. If it were up to me it would be off. I'd much rather open the windows and turn on the ceiling fan. But we live in MA so we don't get the constant heat like down south.

DH and I argue over this. We live in the south; it's supposed to be 98 degrees here with high humidity, and will be like that probably until early September. He prefers to keep it warm, close to 80, and I prefer to keep it cool. We say we compromise by keeping it at 78 during the day and 72 at night, but occasionally he'll sneak it up at night and I'll get a few days of no sleep/tossing and turning all night until I figure out what he's done and go fix it. It's annoying!

Not yet, just going to our place a little north of Harrison. But Wednesday we're planning to head for the UP for 10 days or so. I hope the a/c in the truck camper works. :) But we may not need it. We took the truck camper to the UP 3 summers ago and never needed it, it cooled down so nicely at night. I prefer to just have the windows open and be able to hear the night nature sounds or the low rumble of a freighter going past the campground at the Soo. Much nicer than the drone of the a/c, but it's good to have it if we need it. So much nicer to sleep when it's cool.

Yes, the humidity is really hard to handle. It just seems to sap your strength, at least it does for me. I don't mind hot weather, if the humidity is down. But when the heat is high and humidity is high too it can be pretty miserable.

I agree on having windows open and listening to summer sounds!! I love that! We're closed in around here all winter so I hate feeling "closed" in now.

We'll be heading up to the bridge and surrounding area in a couple of weeks. Can hardly wait for all those sounds!!! Enjoy your trip. :)

We have it set at 74. We have two units...one upstairs, one downstairs. They haven't been able to keep up lately. I don't want to see our next electric bill.

(I am probably more of a 68 in winter, 72 in summer person---but there is no point in setting it at 72 now because it wouldn't get that cool except at night)

I never think of myself as one of those people who is always freezing until I read the DIS! Ours stays at 80 during the day when we aren't home, and I usually move it to 76 in the evening. It's set to go back to 80 at 10pm. For some rooms, 76 is freezing, for others it's not as comfortable. Now, I do like it at the same temperature in the winter, so when this thread pops up in the winter and people talk about 68 degrees, I think they are crazy.

We do have just one large central air unit but it's wonderful. We got it about 5 years ago, and it was a very noticeable upgrade from the one that the builder had used. Much more efficient, and keeps the bills down in the summer, especially with the programmable thermostat.

78-79
And if I'm just sitting around, that feels too cold on a hot day. We keep blankets for watching TV all year round.

Yesterday I sat outside in the shady porch for an hour at 93 degrees. It was warm but not awful.

78? 80? :crazy2: Opening the Windows? Omg. I thought my settings were totally normal and reasonable.

The last time I opened the windows in the summer was when I lived in the mountains (at 7000+) I can't imagine opening the windows. That would be like turning on the oven and opening the door.

This thread has me questioning if there is something wrong with my nervous system or something:confused3

No kidding! I get that people adjust to things, heck, we leave our furnace at 20C when it's -40 out and that's what some people are leaving their house at in the middle of summer lol

To me, there's nothing better than cranking the a/c and sleeping under a heavy blanket.

I rarely use my air conditioning, we usually open the windows at night and close them up during the day to keep the house cool. I use the air when the humidity gets high (like this coming weekend!) I set it to 78-79 during the day and 77 at night.

Opened the windows last night and now my house is a cool 72º

I've run my air for a total of 7 days so far this summer. (Pittsburgh area). We have ceiling fans which are great.

This. Lol. I'm like, almost 80 degrees?! What's the point of an AC? Very interesting. It gets bloody miserable down here in TN, with the 95+ days and humidity. Open windows means bugs and never ending waves of heat. If I wanted that, I'd just go outside :confused3

But apparently A LOT of people leave their thermostat at higher temps, so I dunno. Maybe it's us!! Haha
