Yep, as long as you have a 3G enabled Kindle it will work in Canada, and I believe the rest of the world, too. I love mine just for that feature alone!:)

The WiFi will work no problems anywhere where you have a WiFi hot-spot - like your home or starbucks.

For the 3G you'll have to sign up with a service plan with one of the cell companies and get a SIM card from them to use the 3G.

We both have 3G cells..will the SIM from either of those work?
No?

I am not sure he will use it for that..but got it all the same.

No, it's the iPad that you need a data plan for. On the Kindle you pay for the service up front (my K-2 was $235 or something like that when I got it) in the purchase price.

You don't need a cell plan or sim or anything other a 3G enabled Kindle for downloads, etc. Once you've bought the ebook reader you have no further expenses, other than your purchases.

I have the Edmonton Journal downloaded to my Kindle 2 each day in the early AM, for less than a paper subscription would cost. I am rural so this is a real treat!:)

No...you don't have to sign up for anything. If you bought the "available for international shipping" version of the 3G/wifi Kindle, then it will work almost ANYWHERE without needing a service provider, etc. I've used the download feature on mine in Canada, the US and the Cayman Islands, all without any additional setup or costs.

My personal recommendation is to leave the wireless/3G turned off when you're not using it to download something, however. (Press the menu button and you'll see that option in the list.) The wireless is a bit of a battery hog, and I find I get a lot longer out of a charge when the wireless is off.

I went back and read the details on Amazon of what I had ordered and it looked like I didn't need a sim card and plan so thanks for confirming!!:thumbsup2 I ordered a gift card too for the 'books'!

True about the battery but even leaving the 3G wireless on, I still get a week of use, no problem.:)

It has!!! Not here though..maybe I was doing something wrong but it was telling me Dec 24th delivery here in Canada so I sent it to my DD's apt in NYC and am collecting it later today.:)

Good idea. You never know when ordering things around Christmas. Once you've had it for a while let us know how you like it. Enjoy!:)

I'll take back my previous comments about a service plan. I re-read the info and didn't realize that the 3G was actually free with the Kindle.

Sorry for butting in here, but did you buy the Kindle that says "available for international shipping" or the one that is only available for US shipping? Because there's a difference in where you can use the 3G for free between the two types.

The ones that are shipped to Canada have free 3G everywhere. I think the ones that are shipped to the US have free 3G in the US and charge for 3G outside the US.

We just ordered one earlier this week for my MIL, and my DH originally had the US one in the cart, which would have shipped immediately if it had been allowed to ship to Canada. Once we put the right one in the cart, the availability changed to mid-January. If you got yours fairly fast via your DD in NYC, it might be the US one... :sad2:

I would double check with Amazon and make sure you've got the right one if you intend to use the 3G feature to download books to your Kindle while in Canada.

The one I chose wouldn't ship right away to Canada...it said Dec 24th the earliest and that was last week. So I had shipped to my DD. I have it now...in the box. If it doesn't work ..she can take back with her in January and exchange. Not much I can do now. Will give to my DH for Christmas and will know and go from there.:confused3 My DD who is pretty tekkie said she thinks this one will work fine so....

Thanks all for the help!:)
