If a cashier doesn't ask...you get free...

I probably wouldn't for a bottle of Coke or such, but I wouldn't knock someone else for doing it.

On the other hand, I watch the scanners like a hawk to make sure the prices ring in correct. If the store has a policy about an item ringing in at the right price or it's free, you bet I'll make sure it's free. Mainly since if no one ever calls the store on it, you know that other people are getting overcharged too. A mistake here and there isn't a huge deal, but a few stores around me are notorious for it.
 
I wouldn't ask. I could never be party to hurting someone's work. I know how bad it feels to chastised for something so trivial and I would never put another human being through that.

No, I would never ask, and honestly I probably wouldn't notice if they did forget. If I did notice, I would just walk away and give the poor cashier a break. Would you like to be reminded everytime you messed up, because no one is perfect, and I don't feel forgetting to ask a silly question is worth making someone feel bad about. (the whole idea kind of reminds me of childish tatelling). I don't read signs like that and think, "Oh, I hope they mess up so I can get this for free." If I really want a candy bar or soda that bad I will just buy one. To me life is too short to sit there and get someone in touble over something so silly.

I agree with this and over charges. This is a whole different thing than a cashier forgetting to upsell. In Michigan they have a law about the overcharge and I so wish Kentucky had that same thing. It gets ridiculous going into a store to be overcharged.
 
I wish they would stop with the questions etc but you aren't in the wrong for asking for the free stuff,that's why they have the policy
 
McDonalds for a long time has been doing a promo, if they don't try to sell you a latte or apple pies or some other ridiculous menu item, you can get a speciality drink free. So instead of letting the employee do their job, they use that stupid pre-recorded voice message when you pull up offering "if you would like to try such n such item today, how can I help you?" Half the time the cashier isn't even ready to begin taking your order when that thing goes off. I'd rather wait till I hear a real person ask to take my order than repeat it because they weren't ready. (usually when they're recieving cash or giving change back)

I've never personally asked for the free item, although I've been tempted a few times.

And for the stores that do stupid things like offering to apply for a credit card, are they going to be in trouble when a 10 year old goes through thier line??
 
I HATE when I am asked several times in a store to sign up for a credit card (Kohl's is the worst!), get batteries, etc. I would not remind the cashier they forgot to ask me because I don't want them to ask in the first place! However, OP I do not think you are in the wrong for asking for your items. Get your freebies if you can!

Me too. That's one of the reasons why I hated working retail too. I worked at Old Navy when I was in college and we had to push the Item of the Week and when other things were on sale. My feeling is, let the customer shop and they will pick up what they want.

OP, if you called them on it and they didn't want to give, I would ask to see the manager.
 
I probably wouldn't ask, but I know my dh would for sure! There's nothing wrong with asking IMO though when it is clearly posted that is what happens. As someone who has worked as a cashier in the past, it is important to remember all upsells and everything, just part of the job, even though it sucks. The cashier is just lucky you are a regular customer, getting caught by a mystery shopper could mean your job in places I've worked. If you want to be really nice, remind the cashier but don't ask for the freebie.

And that is definitely not being a pain or abusive really, the worst ever was working at Babies R Us, having to ask for everyone's phone number, you'd think I was asking for some people's first born child.
 
I would ask for it. The company has put this out there for you and the cashier is aware of it. You're not making it up and demanding something that they haven't already offered.

If the cashier is worried about getting dinged for not asking the question, whatever it is, then he/she should be asking the question.

If they don't ask, you get the free product.

I wondered at TJ Maxx last week when I made my $15 purchase if the woman felt as ridiculous as she sounded when she asked me if I wanted to save 10% on my purchase by applying for a credit card.

I work at JCPenney and I HATE asking people to apply for credit cards. I am NOT asking for anything under $50. We do occasionally have specials where they can get 30% off but if it's 10% no way! I was at Kohls the other day (I know, work at JCP but Kohls has things Penney's doesn't) and I bought $20 worth of socks. He asked if I wanted to open one to save the 15%. I said no I don't have a big enough order and he whined. The wanting everyone to open a credit card EVERYWHERE is sickening! I see people come in with $2000 on a JCP card.

:lmao: I remember shopping when I was 13-16 and I would go to various stores and they would ask if I wanted to apply. I did not look old enough for a credit card. I am 22 now and people think I'm 17 or 18. Store credit cards have gotten out of hand.
 
The only good one I can see, is if the cashier fails to give you a reciept. That is part of thier job, and there shouldn't be an excuse not to.

I know Publix offers the item free if there's an over charge. But if the cashier catches it, and sends the bag boy for a price check, I let it go with the correct price because my sale is not complete. If I over pay for an item, I will go to the customer service desk and let them know there. And they have no problem issueing a refund.
 
No, I don't bother asking. I'm fortunate enough that a 99cent bottle of soda and a 50cent candy bar aren't going to break me if I have to pay for them. :goodvibes

It's not a matter of being fortunate or unfortunate. The store offers this guarantee (because, really, that's what it is). Just like with insurance, they're probably counting on a certain percentage of people never making a claim.

OP, the store made you an offer. You accepted the offer. Case closed. I probably wouldn't have done it ONLY because I'm fussy about my soda and candy. If it's not Diet Dr Pepper or dark chocolate with no nuts, I'm not interested :rotfl:
