My brothers and I are throwing my mom a 70th birthday party this summer and I need some ideas for the invitation. My 16 DD who is quite crafty and into scrapbooking has offered to make the invitations but rather than reinventing the wheel, I thought I'd ask DISers for some ideas.

Only family and a few close friends are invited so all know my mom quite well. We've rented a private room at a restaurant and have picked the menu already.

The funny thing is my mom, who doesn't look 70 at all, has told some of her newer friends that she is "only" 68 so she said they will be surprised to be invited to a 70th birthday party :)

Any ideas on invitations and wording would be greatly appreciated.

We did a 50's theme party for my mom...complete with poodle skirts, hair pulled back, photos of my mom in the 50's, invitations in a 50's style font...everything.

If you wanna PM me, I can give you the invitation file...we printed them on vellum with a musical background and a 50's style bow.

For my MIL 80th DH and his 3 siblings held a party at her local Botanic Gardens.Invites were a pretty vellum over pink, tied with a ribbon and had the 4 kids names on them inviting everyone.Don't forget Mom's last name....they did, luckily she is the only Helen in her crowd or it could have been funny.

A fun thing they did was to scan pictures from her life and then have them running in a corner off the laptop, onto a screen for everyone to see. Everyone really liked it, especially the older folks.

And then each kid did a toast to Mom at one point. My Dh did a great one..."things I got from my mom", some funny, like her meatloaf recipe and her driving skills and some more touching. It was very nice.

maybe something themed around a wine lable-something about how some things just get better with age including the birthday girl.

we went to a retirement party a few years back and they took bottles of wine and had scanned a photo of the retiree and some pertinant info into the computer and then printed them up on wine bottle lables. they soaked the original lables off the bottles and replaced them with the new ones. these were used as centerpeices and topped with helium balloons. they were a great hit as souvineers for the attendees (you could also do this with sparkeling juices for the non drinkers).
