This is the first time my 8 yr old dd will be flying. I am not sure what type of id I will need for her. We will be flying AirTran. Can someone help?

i've always brought copies of my kids' birth certificates although i've never been asked to show them. in fact, i once pulled them out to show the person behind the desk and she just waved me off without even looking at them! i still bring them because it will be that one time i don't....

My kids have flown numerous times on several different airlines and we have never been asked to show ID's.

ID is not required for children, but since we take our grandson with us occassionally to WDW, we got him his own ID at the DMV. It only cost $5 and it's great. He loves putting his ID on the ticket counter when the airlines ask for ID, plus we like him having his ID with him. He's had his own since we was 6. He's 9 now, along with having an ID through DMV, they also have his finger print on file and a eye scan. He travels with us a couple of times a year so we thought it a good thing, especially since he has a different last name than ours.

I dont think ID is required untill they are 18.... I remember going to florida when I was a Sr in high school (this is about 2 years ago) I hadn't turned 18 yet (had a couple months left) and they didnt need to see my ID..... But my friend that I brought was 18, and he needed to show ID... If i remember correctly this was on American Airlines...

Years ago my 12 year old daughter and I were taking a quick 1 hour flight I think on Southwest and a rude check in clerk scolded me for not having an ID for my daughter. I didnt understand because we have traveled many times before and was never asked. I dug through my purse and found her library card (no picture) and she said that would do. When I began to put it back in my purse- she went nuts and would not give me my boarding pass until my daughter actually put the card in her pocket! She said " It doesnt do us any good if the ID is not on her body". It was almost as if the lady knew our plane was going to crash!
