I'm trying to re-construct the price going backwards from my reservation having the 40% single supplement added. It comes out to approximately $6900 per adult. Don't know what the child price was.

I've been to Iceland twice, and it would be very easy to do on your own. There are several companies that do multi-day tours, some more budget/luxury than others. Goecco, Extreme Iceland are two that come to mind. Driving would also be easy in the summer, as there are few roads, particularly once you get out of Reykjavik, so hard to get too lost. You can also fly from Rey to Akyreyri, the second largest city, in the north, if you wanted to base some tours from Rey and some from another location.

We booked an Icelandair vacation package that included flight, hotel and a couple of tours and then booked some additional day tours and spent some time on our own in Reykjavik. I signed up for their email updates with special offers and flash sales and when I saw something that worked for us booked it. It was very reasonably priced. The only issue was the flights for the vacation packages only originate in certain cities, so I had to book a separate flight to/from one of those cities. But it worked out well for us. We flew out/in to Boston and stayed a few days there on the way home.

I am doing a "free" stopover on my way to Zurich for the Rhine River Cruise ($400 one way from JFK and they have children's discounts). I am glad to hear it is easy to DIY and drive there, as that is what I am planning.

Our group is 40 and only 7 kids.

Our group is 36 and only 7 kids, which I also found very surprising. Age range is 9-17.
