Here's a snippet from a thread on the DB:

" [caitycaity] ... i didn't go to college thinking "ok, now i'll get more money." i went to undergrad and i am going to grad school b/c 1) i enjoy learning and 2)it will help me to do what i want to do with my life

for some people, number 2 may be making more money, but for me, money is secondary. i love my job and actually, i do put in a lot of work here for "free." i tend to work 50-60 hour weeks and i get paid for 40. i do it b/c i like the work. honestly, if i didn't need money to live, i wouldn't mind working here for nothing."

Would you do your current job for nothing?
Would you voluntarily work hours that you do not get paid for?
Are you paid fairly for what you do?
If the desire for money doesn't motivate you to go to work each day, what does?

To answer your questions quickly, Dana:

No
No
Yes
The NEED for enough money to live comfortably.

Danacara - In all fairness, I think your thread topic is out of context with what I believe caitycaity was saying.

honestly, if i didn't need money to live, i wouldn't mind working here for nothing

My take on this is as follows. If caitycaity was independently wealthy (& didn't need to work) she would coutinue to work where she does because she likes her job and finds it rewarding.

I have to agree with that. If I had more money than I knew what to do with, I would still like to work where I do. Obviously not as many hours and I'd take alot more vacations but I would like to keep working.

I would not do my current job for no money.

I only do extra work because I love my boss, not my job.

I am paid very well for what I do, and the education I have.

The desire for money is the only thing that motivates me.

If I could quit my job, I would in a heartbeat. I'd volunteer at the Rape/Crisis center, and spend more time talking to my family. I work to pay for my car, and have extra spending money. I long for the day when dh retires, we move and I don't have to work. If I do work, it will be merely for fun, maybe TDS a few hours a week.

So, that's it in a nutshell, love my boss, don't really love the work.

Would you do your current job for nothing? Uhh, NO

Would you voluntarily work hours that you do not get paid for? Uhh, YES

Are you paid fairly for what you do? Uhhh NOOOOOO

If the desire for money doesn't motivate you to go to work each day, what does?

I do get some great perks, I work with some really great people and IMHO, my job is something I can do naturally. Meeting celebs regularly is a big thing for me, though, and just mentioning where I work gets me things I couldn't get if I didn't work here.

Would you voluntarily work hours that you do not get paid for?Yes but I do get time off for them
Are you paid fairly for what you do? Yes
If the desire for money doesn't motivate you to go to work each day, what does? Money is a big motivator for me to go to work because I need it:) If I didn't I would still be motivated by my love of children with special needs. They are my inspiration

Caity may indeed be trying to say something different, but she inspired me to ask the questions I asked below the quote. I try to cite properly. If you had more money than you knew what to do with, would you work for no money anyway? In other words, do you see the money that you are paid to be in some way a company's expression of your value to their organization?

pooh and piglet, thanks that was exactly my point. :) and i think that quote was taken out of context from that particular debate, i'm glad dana amended the question. :)

obviously, i am not independently wealthy right now (unlike beauty ;) ), so obviously i still need to work for money. i do, however, find my job extremely rewarding.

and to answer the questions, dana:

"Would you do your current job for nothing?" see above

"Would you voluntarily work hours that you do not get paid for?" yes, i already do.

"Are you paid fairly for what you do?" yes

"If the desire for money doesn't motivate you to go to work each day, what does?" the work i do, and the people i work with. :)

Oh mama, hope the winky smilie does its job there!

"In other words, do you see the money that you are paid to be in some way a company's expression of your value to their organization?"

i do see the money that i am paid as an expression of my value to my company, but i don't think that is mutually exclusive with my feeling that i would want to work for them anyways for free assuming i was independently wealthy.

i really meant it as a joke. i apologize in advance if any offense is/was taken.

Would I do my job for free, even if independently wealthy? Nope. I'd probably do something similar, but I would likely do it on my own, not for this company.

Do I work extra hours and not get paid for it? Depends on the definition. I'm a salaried employee and thus don't get overtime. I guess technically I'm expected to work 40 hours a week, but that's a joke, since I'd never get everything done in that period of time. Thus, I work as many hours as it takes to get my job done.

Am I paid fairly? Yes, I think so. We had a salary adjustment a couple years ago to bring our group up to the national average for our skillsets, so that made my salary fair. :D

Why do I do what I do? To support my family. :D

Would I do my job for free, even if independently wealthy? Nope. My job is just that a job. It's not a career

Do I work extra hours and not get paid for it? No I work OT and get paid for it.

Am I paid fairly? Hell no.

Why do I do what I do? Because I need the money. I am in school part time hoping to eventually have the career I want and will hopefully love. The job I have is the means to what I hope is a good end.

Being a SAHM, I've already made the choice to do just that. Besides the home/family work I do, I also volunteer as a soccer coach, library aide, classroom helper and brownie troop leader. I do all of them for free (and even spend some of my own money) because the money would be better spent on the kids.

I guess I see the "value" of what I do in the organizations in other terms than money.

There is NO WAY I'd do my job for no money!!! The money is the ONLY thing keeping me here:rolleyes:

Dh on the other hand, I'm pretty sure he'd do his job for nothing! (as long as we had enough money in the bank;)

That's the great thing about a "winky", you can say whats on your mind and excuse it as a joke ;) <---see :D

No, I would not work if I were wealthy! I would be a SAHM and raise my daughter.

I like my job, but I am there for the money only!

Another SAHM who works for nothing here. When I did work, it was strictly for the money. If I were to go back to work now, or someday, again it would be for the money.

Would you do your current job for nothing? No, I'd be a SAHM and volunteer at the hospital in the Nursery holding crack babies that need the comfort

Would you voluntarily work hours that you do not get paid for? Not for this boss!

Are you paid fairly for what you do? Not really, but then again, I couldn't beat 'em so I joined 'em and I don't work as hard as I used to (understatement!!)

If the desire for money doesn't motivate you to go to work each day, what does? The internet connection is MUCH faster and makes DISing more fun!! :D (Sad -- but TRUE!!)

1. no
2. No
3. NO!
4. Because, in spite of the 3"no's" above, my job is still a heck of a lot of fun & a continual challenge.

I teach high school.

Would you do your current job for nothing?
I feel like I do, sometimes. But to answer, no. It's too stressful.

Would you voluntarily work hours that you do not get paid for?
I do, I sponsor several clubs and help with National Honor Society. I don't get paid to do all this. Plus all the stuff I take home, like grading.

Are you paid fairly for what you do?
NO!

If the desire for money doesn't motivate you to go to work each day, what does?
To help the kids. To be a good influence on them. To teach others the joy of learning a second language and all that goes with it.
