I think I'm getting addicted to the Twilight series!

I think they are badly written for several reasons.

1. She over-uses adverbs to the point of nausea. If you are a decent writer your audience should understand how your character is feeling or acting without having to say "he said gloomily" or "she sighed listlessly" every other sentance.
2. There is waaaayy to much "telling" and waaayyy too little "showing" which is like Creative Writing 101.
3. I kept expecting more character development, but no. The author never gives us any insight into this great love affair other than Bella thinks Edward is hot and he thinks she smells good.
4. In the fourth book the author just goes nuts and breaks every rule she created for her own world.

That's not even to mention the horribly anti-feminist message of the whole thing. There isn't a single female character in the series whose decisions aren't in some way motivated by either a man or motherhood.

You have to look at the bigger picture. These books are fluff peices, they aren't meant to be scoured over with a fine toothed comb to find flaws and hidden anti-feminist messages.

The story itself is beautiful, and it does reveal a lot of selfless acts from many of the characters. While the writing isn't as wonderful as a classic, it is easy to understand and many women can identify with Bella.

It is an incredible love story. Edward's love for Bella surpasses his extreme desire for her blood, and he endures constant pain just to be near her. Their love is unbreakable, and while it may not be the best thing for Bella or Edward, it is what it is.

I love the series and I think that they just need to be taken for what they are. An interesting read about an incredible world where vampires and werewolves exist, a world where love is stronger than any thirst.

Don't feel bad...I LOVE the Twilight series (and so do all of the girls I work with) - Everyone I know loves it :) (BTW, totally on Team Jacob!)

AH....GOTCHA! :thumbsup2 Would you be interested in reading a short story of mine that's been online for a few weeks? It's not in the vampire area, but more romance/pre-cog thingie. I was told by someone who read my story that my character was as alluring as Edward.

Aside from the many writing sins made in the book, the pacing of the books is horrendous. NOTHING happens in them for a good 2/3 of the books...sometimes longer. New Moon was essentially two completely different books. Bella/Jacob and then about 3/4 of the way through it, the book completely switches to an entirely other plotline out of the blue, abandoning everything tht had come before it.]

The characters are cliched, flawed (developmentally), and in some cases, terribly unlikeable.

BUT, in SM's defense, she managed to craft a compelling tale. While I was supremely disappointed with the series overall, I NEEDED to see how it all turned out.

The first Twilight film was unwatchably bad. New Moon on the other hand, was rather enjoyable. Still suffered from the same pacing issue the book had, but overall a pretty ok movie.

Sure. I'd love to! PM me!

I'm not in any way claiming to be a literary expert but I'm baffled by the editing (or lack thereof) of these books. I can't believe a reputable publishing house would print and circulate a manuscript that reads like a first draft and has MAJOR pacing problems. Even guilty pleasures can be grammatically sound.
