I Seen!

"I seen" bugs me to no end as well.

I also dislike the various made up internet terms. The one that really sets my teeth on edge is furbaby. I don't know why, but the term furbaby bugs me. I think it is because I first saw it on the Knot, and it turned out to be a very hateful and negative place. Now I associate furbaby with that site.

One I have seen recently on other boards is capitalizing every single word in a post. People Write Like This And It Is Very Hard To Read. I don't see why you would even want to type that way, it takes up so much more time. I will typically answer the person's post then put a little P.S. in there stating that their posts will be easier to read if they follow conventional capitalization rules.

The other issue that bugs me is lack of a paragraphs in long posts. My brain sees them and just shuts down.

Wow!I guess ya'll hate ya'll too! This thread is too funny! I live in the south where the errors described are used every day.I understand what you all are saying. It just doesn't bother me as much.

I got it. I was just pointing out there were two different issues going on there. One happens to hit a nerve with me more than the other. :)

Your post seemed to miss the point to me as well. What are the two issues to which you refer? Just curious.

My biggest pet peeve is the incorrect use of "its and it's". That dog hurt it's leg? Haven't people learned what contractions mean? It's even worse when you see it in print or on signs. I seen bugs me to death also.

I see this a lot too, the idea (I think) is that the dog owns the leg, not a shortened form of "it is".

My personally annoyance (I don't even think this is incorrect, it's just something I notice all the time) is when people say "I've just gotten a phone call." As far as I'm aware it's an American-English thing, but it bugs me. I, like most English-English speakers, say "I've just got a phone call." Oh well, I shall live. :upsidedow

Reading or hearing "I seen" drives me nuts too! I cured my DD of this when she was very young, by making her write sentences saying "I saw" the (whatever) over and over about 100 times. She never said "I seen" again and now thanks me for the grammar lesson. :)

The misuse of "then" and "than" drives me crazy too.

I'm annoyed by many spelling/grammatical errors, but the thing that's been setting me on edge lately is a quirk belonging to a woman I work with. She frequently says things like, "So, is what's gonna happen is...." or "No, is what it said is..." It drives me crazy and she uses some variation on that all the time.

There is no A or E in definItely.

Dinning :confused3

"for all intensive purposes"

..... For all intents and purposes.

My biggest pet peeve.

I like y'all. Not sure why but it seems unique and interesting to me. I live in the north but like how y'all flows off my tongue. :goodvibes

I really hate when these are used -> " " incorrectly.

like "Mom"... :scared1: :confused3

Some message boards (including Cruise Critic and I believe this one) use a filter so when someone types in all capitals it coverts all but the first letter of each word into smallcase. If any special characters are used in the post (such as quoting a previous post or using a smilie) then the filter does not work and all caps are retained.

We have a dispatcher for school busses who says, "When WAS you there?" I just want to scream into the mic everytime I hear him... "It's WERE -when WERE you there!!!!" We are bussing children for a SCHOOL system for cryin' out loud - let's get it right!!!!!!

My other biggest peeve: People who ask for 'advise.' Folks-it's advice you are asking for and getting. Please advise me. Advise is a verb; advice is a noun. When you advise, you often give advice. Get it?

I have to admit, I made the mistake with definately a number of times, knowing I was spelling it wrong, but too lazy to find out how to spell it right. Thanks to these threads, I definitely get it right every time now! :thumbsup2 The dinning drives me nuts, too.

My personal pet peeve is the misuse of "hopefully." Hopefully is an adverb and must modify a verb - to wait hopefully, to speak hopefully, etc. It should not stand alone - hopefully, we will go to WDW thi summer - that drives me crazy!

Sentence adverbs are used all the time. Apparently, honestly, ideally, hopefully, etc. The only problem with using "hopefully" as a sentence adverb, is that it is vague in its meaning. "Hopefully, we will take a walk this evening." Does that mean you will walk with hopefullness, or that you hope to take a walk? Generally we assume when we see "hopefully" at the beginning of a sentence that it means "I hope." I wouldn't use it in a formal paper, but I think it's fine for more casual writing like email, letters and message boards.

There is a poster on here who always screws up through and threw. He always types threw for through. That bothers me.

I've noticed a general decline in the the apparent literacy of posters within just the past year or two. And I'm not talking about the occasional typo or misspelled word. I often see bad spelling, grammer, and punctuation throughout posts that look like they were written by a 2nd grader. This is the only board I read on a regular basis, so I don't know if this is just a DIS phenomenon or if it's happening everywhere, but it does concern me. Where did these people go to school and what the heck do they do for a living? I'd like to think these are children posting but I doubt that's the case.
