I Seen!

I wont go into all all the grammar mistakes that drive me crazy, but "I seen" is high up there. I have noticed on boardslike the Dis and others, that people who say "I seen" seem to be located in a certain part of the country, so I am wondering if it is just more common there? I have a good friend who says this - I cringe, but never say anything.

My grammar skills aren't too bad, but I will sometimes make a mistake, so I can't get aggrevated with someone else for making a mistake that I can occasionally make also. What does drive me crazy is talking with people who end every other sentence in "you know", or begin a sentence with "it's like", or worse yet, "it's like...you know". I do think when people talk like this, they will say these things because they are thinking about what they are going to say next; for example, many people, including me, will say "uh".

I have a big problem with sale vs. sell. I check out Craigslist a lot and I often find:
Must Sale, diningroom suite
or
Dining room suite for sell.

Irregardless.

:crazy2:

Ugh. lol

I can't stand this one either :rolleyes1

Concerning things on the Disboards, I really dislike the -ies that people want to put on the ends of words. Ressies and souvies grate on my nerves  I think it would look better if people just typed resv. instead of ressie. It is just too cutesy. I'm sorry! Am I going to be banned?;)

My personal pet peeve is the misuse of "hopefully." Hopefully is an adverb and must modify a verb - to wait hopefully, to speak hopefully, etc. It should not stand alone - hopefully, we will go to WDW thi summer - that drives me crazy!

Queen Colleen

In my teaching years, we always taught that adverbs can modify verbs, adjectives or other adverbs. The above use of the word hopefully is correct.

These pet peeves are hilarious. We all have them. I would add, however, that as an English teacher with a number of snooty colleagues, my biggest grammar and punctuation pet peeve is when people use grammar and punctuation as a hammer on someone who makes an error — as if they are the all-knowing, always correct kings and queens of English usage. My mom was an old school grammar teacher, and she used to always tell us, "Remember, there is no central authority of English grammar — no 'big book' everyone goes to for the definitive answer. Language is alive. It changes. Don't be the last person to know that something has come into acceptable usage — and don't be a snob."

I'd have to write a book to tell you all of my grammar and usage peeves, but the one thing that gets me more than any other, and I mean really gets me deep down is when somebody gets on a high horse and corrects another poster and proceeds to make their own errors. :rotfl2:

It kills me.

I think I love your mother. :lovestruc

The English teachers I know go both ways. They're either very flexible and just enjoy communicating with people and keep the grammar lessons in the classroom, or are very snobby. I'm flexible. I can't imagine going around feeling superior to people around me just because I know some silly rules. I'm not perfect. In fact, I can't add 2 and 2 without messing up.

Well said! :thumbsup2

No doubt.

I've noticed a general decline in the the apparent literacy of posters within just the past year or two. And I'm not talking about the occasional typo or misspelled word. I often see bad spelling, grammer, and punctuation throughout posts that look like they were written by a 2nd grader. This is the only board I read on a regular basis, so I don't know if this is just a DIS phenomenon or if it's happening everywhere, but it does concern me. Where did these people go to school and what the heck do they do for a living? I'd like to think these are children posting but I doubt that's the case.

I love reading the pet peeves on here. I totally agree about "I seen..."

I don't want to single anyone out here, but it's "aggravated."

Oh, I love it when that happens!

Since bad spelling is a pet peeve of yours, I thought you might want to know that grammar is the correct spelling.:)

Just before Christmas I politely corrected one of my students when he said, "I seen ____", and he just as politely replied, "No, m'am, I was using past tense. I did mean 'I seen ____'". He refused to believe me, and I'm an ENGLISH TEACHER. Sometimes you've gotta shake your head and wonder.

My personal fingernails-on-the-chalkboard word, however, is ALOT. The word does not exist, people! You can use the very weak descriptive phrase "a lot", or you can use the verb "allot", but nowhere, nohow is ALOT a word! Drives me nuts!

Mrs. Stover, is that you??? :lmao:

I almost failed a 12th grade Shakespeare class because I misspelled the word "alot". Mrs. Stover was a stickler about grammar and spelling. And on an almost daily basis she would tell us that alot was not a word. That it was 2 words...a lot. She assigned an essay and had told us beforehand that one misspelled word would give you an automatic F. And guess who had the only F in the class. :headache:And of course I had misspelled the word a lot. The only spelling error in my essay. It was pure laziness on my part and I deserved that F. But, I was sweating it at the end of the semester.

I never said bad spelling is a pet peeve of mine. If you read the sentence prior I said I was not talking about the occasional spelling or grammar mistake. What I'm talking about is when people post things that are so full of spelling, grammar, and punctuation errors that it is difficult to comprehend what the poster is trying to say.

Yes, and so do noone and prolly. I have a lot of grammar/spelling pet peeves.

:) Michele <---- Queen of ending sentences with prepositions and not noticing her own typos!

Grr, "prolly" and other text-speak makes me absolutely insane. I know I'm hyper-OCD about grammar and spelling and such and not everybody's that way, but you'd think people would proofread before posting on a public forum.

On the other hand, I won't even use text-speak when texting. The first time I type "ur," someone please pull the plug. ;)
