I Seen!

Here is my VOTD (vent of the day):

People, when you say "I seen....whatever" it is just wrong, the correct thing to say is "I saw....whatever"

"I seen...." has been in at least three different posts today.

Also, as a friendly reminder, deFINITEly has the word finite in it, not finate.

Thanks for the vent.

Are you from the NE PA Coal Regions:rotfl:

All kidding aside, I can't stand "I seen" either:headache:

Another two:

"I could care less."

and...

"Your going to WDW?"

I hate when people use there's (there IS) in the wrong way. Even newscasters do it now. Even Pal Mickey did it! He said "There's lots of countries in World Showcase!" Really Mickey? There IS lots of countries?

Just before Christmas I politely corrected one of my students when he said, "I seen ____", and he just as politely replied, "No, m'am, I was using past tense. I did mean 'I seen ____'". He refused to believe me, and I'm an ENGLISH TEACHER. Sometimes you've gotta shake your head and wonder.

My personal fingernails-on-the-chalkboard word, however, is ALOT. The word does not exist, people! You can use the very weak descriptive phrase "a lot", or you can use the verb "allot", but nowhere, nohow is ALOT a word! Drives me nuts!

That's wrong on two levels since "I could of gone" isn't right either. My biggest pet peeve is using "of" in place of "have". :::shudder:::

It's could HAVE, would HAVE, should HAVE, people!!!

This is my biggest pet peeve, as well! Drives me crazy when I read something like "I should of gone to the store...". I just want to yell back "No, you should HAVE gone to the store"! ;) :rotfl:

Yes, I know. That was the point.

Thank you! I knew I wasn't alone. :rolleyes1

Just reading "I seen" is enough to make my skin crawl.

Might I add HISSELF to the list. As in, "He got hisself in trouble."

Also, double negatives, (i.e. "I don't have none.") are my kryptonite. :scared:

Though yes, my siggy makes me lol.

My latest annoyance is with apostrophe abuse.

I don't know which is more grating-

Too many:
Mom's, do you have any good tip's for taking photo's of boy's?

Or none at all:
Im sure I dont.

:) Michele

My personal pet peeve is the misuse of "hopefully." Hopefully is an adverb and must modify a verb - to wait hopefully, to speak hopefully, etc. It should not stand alone - hopefully, we will go to WDW thi summer - that drives me crazy!

Actually, this use of 'Hopefully' is correct. It is present tense subjunctive. It begins the dependent clause of the sentence. The 'will go' is the present tense subjunctive in the Independent clause.

"I seen" drives me crazy too!

It also makes me crazy when people pronounce supposedly as "supposeUBly". AH!!!

And my MIL, God love her, butchers the English language on a daily basis. For example, she uses the word "phantom" instead of "fathom" as in "I can't "phantom" how she could do that".

Oh, and enchiladas? Those are pronounced "enchilitis".

My biggest pet peeve is the incorrect use of "its and it's". That dog hurt it's leg? Haven't people learned what contractions mean? It's even worse when you see it in print or on signs. I seen bugs me to death also.

I use hopefully that way all the time! Glad to hear it is actually grammatically correct. ::yes::

The guy that sits over the wall from me at work (an educated professional) says "I seen" ALL THE TIME!!! The first time he said it I nearly fell out of my chair. Now, he also claims to have been hit by lightning 5 times, so perhaps that has short-circuited the part of his brain responsible for grammar!;)

I once saw someone post (I don't think it was this board) the following: "It's a doggy-dog world". Heavens to Betsy, that doesn't even make sense (unlike the real phrase "it's a dog-eat-dog world").

Also, is anyone else afraid to post on threads like this because you just KNOW you have made some sort of grammatical error while you are criticizing someone else?

I think many grammatical errors are irritating, but I'd much rather read poor grammar and see useful posts, than somebody be afraid to post and make mistakes. I like that this thread is venting without picking on people :thumbsup2

Yes- Once, I posted about a grammEr pet peeve, you know I got called out on that one pretty quickly!
