I rose in the early dawn hours and checked the weather. Cool, cloudy, pretty good for running. I'm thinking "I've never done this before. Will people look at me and think I don't belong?"

I stretched and started slow to warm up. Another female runner came along and took my place... okay, admittedly, I willing gave it up. I was intimated by someone who looks like a more "serious" runner. But I shouldn't have doubted myself.

I ran... I was cold, then I was hot... I was thirsty, I was sweaty. I had trouble keeping pace with other runners around me. But I kept going. I didn't care so much about making good time... just in achieving my personal goal.

I did it! I ran in Boston!

Okay.... here is the "real" story! DH and I decided to spend an overnight in Boston with the kids for school vacation week. We DID arrive in Boston early Monday morning (marathon day). But we only arrived early in an effort to avoid any marathon road closures!

Tuesday morning I got up early to use the fitness center in the hotel. I had just gotten on the treadmill and set it for 30 minutes. I figured I would do 30 minutes on the treadmill, 20 on the bike, and MAYBE 20 on the elliptical (all of the equipment they had). About 1 minute into my walk a woman (obviously a "real" runner) came in and asked how much longer I would be on the TM. I explained that I had just started. But then I said I would step off and use the other equipment so that she could use the TM. She thanked me and took her place (honestly, I guess I thought she would say NO!). Well... after struggling on a clonking-clinking broken elliptical for about 15 minutes, I gave up and tried the bike. Also broken and not working at all.

I didn't want to NOT exercise.... after all, I had gotten up at 6 am on a vacation day, dawned my exercise clothes (which I had actually remembered to bring along), and got mentally ready for a good 60 minutes of exercise. So I headed outside. I didn't know the area very well, so I figured I had better stick to one side of the road.

I started out thinking I might do my usual TM routine of 2 min walk/2 min run. But I just ran and ran and ran (okay, admittedly for probably under 45 minutes). I ran from the hotel, past the T station, past the Museum, under the overpass, and into the park. I walked around a park to cool down some and then ran back to the hotel. I looked at my watch and realized that I still had some time, so I ran up the sidewalk in the other direction.... past a gas station, car wash, liquor store (you know, traditional Boston landmarks ).

Anyhow, I was so proud of myself for several reasons. #1... I actually made the effort to exercise during a vacation day. #2.... I ran in PUBLIC and didn't worry about what people were thinking. #3.... I actually ran a pretty good distance and didn't DIE!

Sorry to "fool" you with the title, but I thought it was funny! :rotfl:..........P

I'm giving you a big high five for not just giving up and going back to your room. You should be proud of yourself!!!

Woo hoo - I'm so proud of you. You had me at the begining, lol!

I would have told that lady where to go, but you are a better person than me - LOL!! I can't believe she let you get off the machine and she took it. Boy - what a loser she is.
