I normally don't ask for prayers request but need to make an exception. My sister had her thryoid removed this morning and isn't doing very well. The surgery took 1 1/2 hours longer than expected because the dr said it was sticky? What does that mean? Can you please say a prayer that her recovery is quick? She has 2 young girls who are going crazy w/out their mommy. She will be in the hospital at least until tommorrow. TIA.

My so in law went through this twice. Prayers said! Don't know what happened with hers. He had a non malignant growth on his and it is a very tricky surgery to do. He is fine now!

I have had several surgeries during my life and having my thyroid removed was absolutely the worst! My overnight hospitalization turned into 5 days, 3 of which were in the ICU. Your sister has my deepest sympathy for what she is going through.

I hate it when the doctors (or nurses for that matter) come out with terms that can be interpreted in many different ways. Someone needs to sit that doctor down have him explain "sticky" so that everyone can understand exactly what that means. ASK QUESTIONS!!

I know there are people on this board who had thyroid surgery with no complications so I may be giving you the worst case scenario but she also needs to know if her parathyroids were removed. They are another gland that is right near the thyroid and sometimes in the thyroid. Their removal can cause other long term issues, one of which is the body's inability to maintain a proper calcium level. She should also have her vitamin B-12 level checked at least once a year as they now think loss of these glands can cause the body to stop absorption of this vitamin. Once again... ASK QUESTIONS!

I don't mean to scare you but these are all things that have happened to me since the surgery. The logical me knows that my thyroid had to go so I could be sure that the growths were not malignant. They weren't. The emotional me thinks it wasn't worth it considering all that has gone wrong since this surgery.

I can't speak for your sister's case, but when I had a benign tumor removed from my spine, the same thing happened. The surgery took longer than expected, and the surgeon said it was "sticky." When I asked what the heck that meant, he said two things, the tumor had grown "legs" and wrapped around my vertabrae, and it was truly "sticky" and had to be "scraped off." He compared it to a firmer version of an egg white, a little mushy and literally sticky.

The good news is that complication didn't hinder my recovery time at all, and wasn't considered anything to be alarmed over.

Thank you so much for all your prayers and support! Although she's still in alot of pain, she seems to be doing so much better today!!!! The girls are doing good as well, just waiting for Mommy to come home which, hopefully, will be this weekend.
