Not many DPs but here are some i found...

01/10/2018 : No offer other than downgrade to no fee AA card. PCd to Double Cash instead.
2/17/2018: Called to cancel the two AA cards I have. Was offered 7500 points after $1000 spend 90 days. Took the deal on one, closed the other. One was 2 years old, the other almost a year. Minimal spend over the bonus, but did use occasionally.
2/25/18: $95 credit OR 7500 miles if spend $1000 over next 3 months. Accepted the $95 credit offer. Have had the card 9 years, with $9K annual spend.

Did your daughter have to be present to book this when they combined the points?

I'm not sure if she had to be, but since she was, the woman spoke to her to make sure it was okay.

This pertains to the Amex Platinum, but can be applied more generally. Since you’re well over a year into holding the Platinum, you could call just before your AF is about to post to fish for an offer, take it or think about it, and after your AF posts if you didn’t like the first offer, and again before the AF is due. Amex will refund the AF if you cancel a card within 30 days after the statement in which the AF posts.

The Amex retention department can be reached at 1-800-452-3945. However, I don’t think Amex calls it the “retention department,” even though that’s what they’re there for.

Before you call in, you should check out FlyerTalk’s thread on Amex retention offers for the latest data points on what people are being offered to keep their cards open. This way, you can familiarize yourself with the range of offers on your card product and whether what’s ultimately offered to you is good or bad. You can follow the thread here: https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/ame...812751-american-express-retention-offers.html

When you call in, you can say something along the lines of, “The annual fee on my card is about to post (or just posted), and I’m evaluating whether to keep the card or cancel it. Do you have any offers or incentives that’ll help me decide to keep the card?” Don’t be afraid to say “cancel,” because that’s often the trigger word for Amex to make you some offers. If the Amex rep asks if you want to cancel, without making you any offers, tell them “no, I haven’t decided to cancel at this time, but I’m evaluating my options,” and ask again if they have any offers for you. Amex will not cancel the card without reading you a long list of disclosures and getting your affirmative consent. So don’t worry about that. The rep may also try to sell you on the value of the card’s benefits, particularly when it comes to the Platinum. Even if you really love the Platinum’s benefits, this is a sales tactic you shouldn’t fall for because it’s in your interest to downplay their value to you. You recently got a CSR, which Amex views as a serious competitor to the Platinum, so you can leverage having another premium travel rewards card against Amex. The CSR has a lower AF, an easier to use $300 travel credit than the Platinum’s $200 airline fee credit, you might not use Uber, the UR points are easier to earn and worth more to use through the Chase travel portal, the CSR also gives you access to the Priority Pass Lounges, the CSR has better trip delay/interruption and rental insurance, etc. If you don’t like the offers Amex gives you when you first call in, tell them you’d like to think about it, hang up and try again later. You might get a different offer after your AF posts.

Amex retention offers are attached to your account and can change periodically. The Amex rep is likely just reading whatever offer is available to your account that comes up on screen. Factors that can influence retention offers include how much spend you put on the card in the past year, whether you’ve used up any of the card benefits, whether you got a retention offer last year (retention offers are once per 13 months), and I’m also guessing more broadly their retention rate for that card product at the time and even time of year. Anecdotally, people have called before their AF posts, after their AF posts, and just before the AF is due to see if they get an offer, and if they don't like it HUCA later to see if they get a better offer.

I've called on a weekday early morning (Pacific Time) and got a sh*t offer on my Amex PRG; called about a week later on a weekday afternoon, same sh*t offer; called a week later on a weekend morning, same sh*t offer. About a month later, I saw numerous DPs of much better retention offers on the PRG. Most recently on my Platinum, I called in on a Saturday early morning, and got an almost irresistible retention offer of 30k MR with no spend requirement, but I also did put $25k/yr. on the card, double dipped the airline credits, used all my Uber credits, saved ~$200 on Amex Offers, and had my wife as an AU for another $175, so I’m guessing Amex really wanted me to pay another AF or they’d be losing money on my card.

If you don’t get a good offer, don’t be afraid to close it. But make sure the primary cardmember has another MR-earning card to keep the points in that account alive, or else canceling the Platinum — if that’s the only MR-earning card associated with the account — will wipe out all the MR points in the account. Amex has fee free MR-earning credit cards that can hold MR points as you cancel higher fee cards that don’t give you a reason to keep them. Or, before you cancel the Platinum, you could apply for another one of Amex’s Platinum card’s like the Charles Schwab or Ameriprise versions, so you get to keep the benefits and at least for the Charles Schwab Platinum card get a new signup bonus (might as well if Amex won’t give you a good points offer to keep your existing Platinum).

    Hope this helps.

Hi all! We got back from CA late last night, and I had to work today (didn’t really think that one through, lol), so I’m super tired. We had a great time though! Disneyland was a lot of fun, even with the extreme heatwave. It got up to 114 in Anaheim on Friday! :faint: But we survived, and then had a relaxing and relatively cool few days with our friends in San Diego. The Holiday Inn Express & Suites in Anaheim was nice; our room was big, with 2 queen beds and a sectional sofa that was also a sleeper. And the walk to the parks wasn't bad. Once I can get my pictures uploaded I'll post a full review.

I did remember to apply for the new Marriott card today before the 100K points offer expires, but I got the 30-day message. This is the first time I've gotten that on a personal card from Chase, so I suspect I'm reaching the limit of credit that they'll extend to me. Or it's too soon since my last application, which was the CIC in mid-May. I'll check the status line tomorrow and see if it updates. I should still get the 100K bonus even if I'm not approved until after that offer ends, correct? Since that was the offer I applied under? Oh, I also tried to use a DISchurners link but none of them were working. They all just go to a page that says "System issue, please try again later." I'm guessing this is due to the offer changing tomorrow. Other Chase links still seem to be working.

@Lain and @Albort - thank you very much. This is really helpful info! I'm willing to try it with the AMEX card later in the year when our AF shows up. We've pretty much put all of our spending on that card up until last week, so hopefully they will want to keep us.

I've gotten the 30 day message for every card I've ever applied for since my very first CSP, so I wouldn't read too much into that. Maybe evaluate your own income to credit ratio and see how you're looking, but I don't think the 30 day message is an indicator of that

My second Hilton statement closed and I’m up to 10,000 Hilton points. Small potatoes since it’s Hilton, but it’s nice to see my stash increasing!

    https://onemileatatime.boardingarea.com/2018/07/11/united-inflight-credit-card-sales-pitch/

    Interesting takeaways:
Effective 9/1/18, United will require their flight attendants to pitch their credit card on every domestic and international flight.
Flight attendants will receive $100 for every approved application, up from the current $50 bonus.

I'm thinking in-flight credit card applications might be one place where we'll see higher offers on the United Explorer card, similar to how Southwest and Hawaiian has higher in-flight offers on their cards.

heh, reminds me of the airline prank where the guy who got woken up by the airline attendant for a credit card offering... he was able to locate the person in the airline responsible for this push and calls him at 5am to push for a product he owned. :P

I just used it the first time today. Hope I did things right because I didn’t even think to read the Reddit once. Wanted to try a small payment to something before I tried with the tuition. I did get confused when it asked if I was paying business or personal expenses. I put personal, but then after realized, duh, I’m using my business card. I hope that wasn’t a mistake. Should I have put business?

I don’t think it matters. I signed in to my Plastiq account today after not being in it for a while, and got a pop up question asking if I use it for personal or business expenses, or both. It sounds to me like they are considering offering services aimed at small business owners and are trying to gauge potential interest in that. I wouldn’t worry about it.

Like @Ava noticed, this pop up question is relatively new (previously, you could ignore it when asked). I clicked personal and Plastiq looks like it’s still coding 3x on my CIP for payments processed yesterday, 7/10. So I also don’t think it matters.

Gosh, I’m so far behind on this thread and not able to catch up soon. But I wanted to pop in and tell everyone that I started the transfer of my WDW vacation package from Disney to Chase today. I called Melissa at Chase and she emailed me a form. I filled it out and sent it back to her. She said it should be good. I am holding my breath (of course) cause I’m just a worrier LOL. But it was quick and easy so I hope it works. My 30 days is up on Sunday but Melissa said Disney will use the day they receive it (today, hopefully).

Can't decide whether to try for the Marriott personal card or not! Anyone else debating it before the 100k goes away? My dh is 2/24 and I'm 6/24 so I'd have to apply for him. And he just got the CIC a couple of weeks ago so that may not be a smart thing to do. Prior to the CIC, he had not gotten a Chase card since his CIP back in 10/17. Hmm, what to do, what to do?!?

I’m 4/24, and I haven’t decided what to do with my final slot (maybe Marriott or United, or double dip both, before getting the SPG Lux if I even can?). I’m laying low on Chase for a while and in a holding pattern to see what comes out in August.

DW is 2/24, but I think we’ll pass on the Marriott 100k offer for her. If DoC’s rumor is believed, holding Marriott card or receiving a Marriott bonus in the past 24 months would preclude her from the SPG Lux. (But holding a SPG card or receiving a SPG bonus in the past 24 months won’t preclude you from the SPG Lux or a Marriott card, except that a SPG consumer card will add to */24?) I guess this only matters if you’re planning to go for the $450 AF SPG Lux and are willing to gamble that the signup offer will be as good or better than the Marriott Premier Plus. DW doesn’t have either the Marriott Biz or personal card, and we’ll keep it that way for now. Besides, a new Marriott Biz is supposed to be released 8/26, and that might be another opportunity to pick up a big signup bonus after we know what’s up with the SPG Lux and Marriott Premier Plus.

    So,

7/12 - Marriott Premier Plus 100k offer ends

July - Rumored SW Premium card is coming out

    8/1 - SPG Lux releases

8/9 - Existing SPG cardmembers can upgrade to the SPG Lux?

8/26 - Marriott Business Premier Plus releases (with upgrade options/bonus offers for existing Marriott Biz cardholders?)

Seems to me like lots of opportunity to rack up some Starriott points in the coming month(s). I’m also pretty sure the Marriott 100k offer will come around again, or perhaps a lower points offer with the first year AF waived (but will we still be under 5/24 then?).

For us, we’re deep in slogging through our Hilton Biz MSRs this month and probably into next. In August, we’ll be looking at signing DW up for the CIU or the SPG Lux, or both. And for me, if I’m precluded from the SPG Lux because I got the Marriott Biz and bonus, then my next Amex credit card will be the BBP, which won’t add to my 4/24, get me 2x MR everywhere, and finally a no AF MR card to hold my points. Lots of other cards to keep us busy!
