Had a long flight on United last year where the seatback entertainment system didn't work. Did the customer care form online hoping for some miles, but got $50/person travel certificate instead (for 4 of us). They were surprisingly easy to use! Can be used for other people and can be combined (up to 10). The expiration date is book by and not travel by.

Booked one return flight from Cancun for our stay at Secrets Impressions Moxche. Only had to pay $60 OOP. Can't be used with Travel Funds, so had to book the other ticket separately.

It’s been a busy week here in Germany at my DD’s home. Our 2nd GS was born April 21 weighing in at a healthy 9lb 10oz! My 17 month old GS and I have had 3 1:2 weeks to bond! It’s tough to only see them every 3 months or so! I’m already planning my next trip back to Germany in the end of August into September. My friend who I was supposed to meet in Amsterdam on April 19 decided not to come after all. So I kept moving reservations and dates, and am finally heading to Amsterdam in the morning on a solo trip. I have a tour booked for tomorrow afternoon and tickets for Keukenof gardens on Saturday morning before I fly back to Frankfurt in the afternoon. So that leaves Friday totally open and I’m looking for suggestions of your favorite places to go. I had tickets for the Ann Frank house for earlier this month which I had to lose as there are no refunds. And tickets are not available any other way than to advance book. My train ticket to Amsterdam was triple what it would have been with an advance booking but up until Tuesday night, I was not sure if I would be taking the trip to Amsterdam. I do have lots of C1 points to erase my travel charges. I look forward to hearing back from those that have visited Amsterdam.😊

Congrats!! That is a healthy baby... guess he really did come in his own time.

I haven't been but my son told me that they weren't able to get advance Anne Frank tickets, but had a second online chance at something like 9am on the day of?
The Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam is supposed to have amazing service and a courtyard type setting, which I guess is unusual? Perhaps pop in for a drink or tea? I don't believe they can serve alcohol outside bc it's a historical site or something, but you can bring drinks out there.
Rent a bike if you dare?

Apple had to add a feature that lets people know if there is a tracker with them that isn't connected to them because of how many criminals were using it for stealing cars, kidnapping, spying, etc. Now if you have an iphone you get a notice after a while.
I get that notification if DH spends the day with me and carries his airpods (he has a tracker in the case) even though my phone knows he's family. It's great that they have this feature, though, because there are some creepy people out there.
Does anyone know what time AA releases the next day of award flights? We’ve been watching for JAL for next year and can’t figure out what time they’re releasing them. I looked at 12 am and 1 am east coast time and the flights are never loaded at that time
Pretty sure that AA operates on DFW/Texas time but I also remember that flights didn't drop exactly at the hour. Give it at least 10 minutes before giving up.

Anyone have any luck recently with the Amex generic offers page? I was trying to add the WA $100 off $500 to my Aspire, but I get the error that I'll have to add it from my offers section when logged into my account. This has worked for me in the past based on a tip here, though.
I was able to successfully add the WA $100 off $500 offer from the Amex generic offers page to 2 Aspires by using Firefox, entering my card info and then logging to each account.

Get a one-time $100 statement credit by using your enrolled eligible Card to spend a minimum of $500 USD in one or more purchases on room rate and room charges, when you pay for your stay at participating Hilton properties in Anguilla, French Polynesia, Mexico and the US from 4/3/2023 to 7/31/2023.

I am pretty sure the wording was 90 days from account opening, which for us was 1/16. Did you already get the $300 for the checking account? If so, the $400 for the combined accounts should have come with the $200 savings bonus. I'm surprised you got the savings bonus already.

Our offer was -

1) Set up direct deposit1 by 04/16/2023 to get your $300 Chase checking bonus.
2) Deposit a total of $15,000 in new money to your savings account by 02/15/2023.
3) Maintain a $15,000 savings balance through 04/16/2023 to get your $200 Chase savings bonus.

Complete steps 1, 2 and 3 to get your extra $400 bonus.

So my bad here--the extra $400 posted to the checking account on 4/25, the same day that the $200 bonus posted to the savings account. The $300 bonus posted to the checking account on 2/14.

I’m now on my third train to get to Amsterdam. Would have been 4 but my DSIL drove me to the first train station about 15-20 minutes from their home. There is a train station 2 blocks from where they live but it was 36 degrees this morning so… I really enjoy train travel more than flying, though I am flying back from Amsterdam to Frankfurt since I will be at the airport the day of my departure returning on a bus from Keukenof gardens. I picked this train route since this had the least connections and the longest time In between transfers. My train into Mannheim was delayed and my train to Cologne was also delayed. I arrived in Mannheim during the morning commute rush hour and it was busier than NYC Times Square area during the Christmas holidays! I decided to leave my Away bigger carry on back at my DD’s and just carry the Afar backpack. As an older person with arthritis I can see the pros and cons to both. I did pack a lot (probably too much) in the backpack but some of it is food so that’s getting eaten up on the 6 1/2 hour journey. I’m stashing my backpack at the Amsterdam train station and have a 3 hour tour called Windmills, Clogs, and Dutch cheese which I booked through Capital One shopping portal thru Viator. Got it for a 14% savings. Then I’ll erase the charge since it codes as “other travel”. It’s also Kingsday where they celebrate the Kings birthday so it should be very festive! I’ll erase all of my train travel with my C1 points. I chose 2nd class and requested a seat assignment. Normally I sit wherever on regional trains but you really need a seat, though there are plenty of open seats if you want to seat hop on the ICE. (Long distance trains). A guy just came by selling cappuccinos for 4 euros. Beats walking to the dining car!

I'm loving reading all the experiences here since my life doesn't = huge travel experiences right now..... I feel armchair adventurous!

Two comments this morning. Can I say how much I love Delta's cancellation policy booked on miles? I had to move a trip and the new flights were higher. But I am not about to rebook for the 4th time, because it keeps dropping, and is now 3200 miles less than my original dates!! it's like booking a rental car these days.

I also just got a credit journey notice that a credit limit was lowered. It was our JCPenney card, went from $3000 to $525. Ouch. I haven't used it in forever, I bought a gift card a couple of years ago to keep it active. Apparently I needed to do it more. But I haven't spent that one yet. That is our oldest card, opened 30 years ago.

Colorado and Utah Spring Break Trip
Denver, CO & Gateway, CO & Moab, Utah
March 2023

Vibe: Road tripping but mama needs a nice hotel (and an airplane to get there)

So about 45 days before our kids Spring Break, we decided to scratch our plans for Costa Rica, for a few reasons. I'd read reports of how hot it would be. We just don't do great with adventure and heat. 20+ years into traveling we feel like we are better honing in on our travel style and we've realized for an active vacation, we really kinda like temps in the 50s-60s. The other reason was that our kids had a spring break and an Easter break, with four school days in between. We would be on a beachy vacay in the Caymans for Easter and so we thought it wouldn't make sense to do two hot/tropical vacations just a week apart.

So, 45 days before our break we decided to pull together a trip to Colorado and Utah. I feel like this trip I really pulled from an arsenal of different points programs, so I'm kinda proud of myself for that.

Flew nonstop MKE-DEN for around 30k RT/pp on SW + 2 CPs. Bookmarked the trip with a night in Denver on arrival and departure. Quick rundown on each in case anyone is visiting and wants to compare. Each night we used a Marriott FNC + top off.

Hotel Clio- 42k (35k FNC +7k), $54 valet
  • High floor (9)
  • Cute jade rock gift at check in
  • Central to restaurants
  • Quality bedding, towels, etc
  • Bagged ice at ice machine for grab/go
  • So many waters offered
Valet was totally worth it as we had a very late arrival and then were headed out early to start the trip. If you're looking for a Denver in Marriott, I would choose this option over The Jacquard.

The Jacquard- 29k (35k FNC) + $59 valet
  • Two blocks from Hotel Clio in Cherry Creek area
  • Rooms felt cramped
  • Double beds?
  • Quality bedding, mattress firm
  • Weird bathroom with a glass stall door in the toilet room
  • Sparkling or flat water fill stations
Of note, both of these hotels inadvertently billed our CCs for the room charges even though we used FNC. The first hotel explained to me that when someone uses a FNC, they bill Marriott a set rate, and they forgot to switch it to billing Marriott and billed us. This did show up on one folio that we were emailed and for the other, they never sent an invoice and I just noticed that charge on a card. So pay attention to those credit card transactions.

For years I have been lusting after a hotel stay called Gateway Canyons Resort & Spa. It's about a 5 hour drive from Denver; so picturesque driving through the mountains and along the Colorado River. We rented a Jeep Wrangler through Budget using Autoslash to find the best rate and then to monitor. Our week only cost $297 after about four different price drop notifications! And boy would we come to need that four wheel drive!

IMG-1796.jpg
IMG-1798.jpg

We stopped in Vail for some lunch and to walk around the pedestrian only heated streets. So fun to see the chair lifts and the bustle of skiing activity. As the landscape changed from a mixture of mountains to sedimentary rock (that knowledge thanks to my smarter-than-me 9 yo), we stopped in Glenwood Springs where gunslinger Doc Holiday took his last breath. We saddled up at a cute ice cream shop where we learned we came all the way to Colorado to get some ice cream they buy from Wisconsin! The kids got a kick out of the tid-bit. We stopped for some gas and groceries in Grand Junction.

So Gateway Canyons is super remote. There's really nothing around for about 45 minutes. The drive around this area is some of the most stunning scenery I've ever seen. We booked Gateway Canyons through Amex's FHR so that we could take advantage of $100 activity credits, free breakfast for 2 which ended up being $30x2 f&b credit, upgrade potential and guaranteed 4 pm checkout. We splurged for a casita, because mama likes a nice hotel stay. Pricey at about $740-$200= $540. We were upgraded further to their Hacienda Casita, which sits at the base of this beautiful Palisade. The resort was so peaceful, with deer frollicking in the fields. We cruised on bikes and scooters around the resort, had smores on our patio firepit, soaked in the hot tub and the kids did some horesback riding. We would've plunked down $500 to stay at an airbnb in an amazing setting like this, so to have so much included and not have to check out until the following day was a no brainer for us. I think we will definitely be back, but would aim for a bit warmer weather and would want at least two nights. There are rooms here for more in the $200-300 range, so it's a great use of the FHR credit if it works with your travel plans.

I saw the high offer on CSP. I have one but my husband does not. He is 3/24 (Marriott and United 10/22; southwest 2/23). Should he apply? It’s at 80k and I think I can refer him?

Onto Moab, we had 3 nights booked at the Hoodoo Moab, Curio Collection by Hilton at 80k/nt.
  • Upscale
  • Full service restaurant and bar
  • Flexible use of $15x2 f&b Diamond breakfast credit
  • Upgraded to 1 bedroom suite just off of pool and hot tub
  • Heated pool and rapid whirlpool plus inferno hot tub
  • Air Temperature ranged from 35-62
  • Rain causing pressurization issues with their sewage system- newer construction in the past few years
The Hoodoo is right across the street from a food truck park in Moab, so super accessible to walk for food options. Moab is a cute little tourist town. Food options we loved:
- Quesadilla Mobilla food truck
- Doughbird for morning pastries but in the afternoon they have hot chicken and waffle fries that sell out quickly.
- Antica Forna. OMG this Italian food is better than any food we had in Italy. They import everything from Italy and make everything from scratch, including their mozzarrella. Inexpensive and amazing quality. When does that happen?

Cute story about my husband getting hot chicken from Doughbird. Normally at Dave's Hot Chicken, DH gets the hottest heat level, called Reaper. So at Doughbird, my husband ordered the hottest, called Melt Your Cluckin Face Off. They asked him five times if he was sure. Then they wrote "Good luck" on the box. DH says Dave's is hotter while Doughbirds is spicier. I don't know what that's supposed to mean, but it means something to him. :confused3 While DH was inside getting this, (poor parenting alert) I told DS (9) he could ask his Dad if he "melted his cluckin face off?" DS worked up the courage to ask and he had the best belly laugh after. My parenting style is normally me just helicoptering around and we are sort of strict, so having this autonomy was a cute moment for him.

So we loved Arches National Park. We got in free with the 4th grader pass and because we were visiting in March, we didn't have to deal with timed entries that start in April. We did pay for the Shaka app and while not nearly as good as Hawaii, we were glad we did. Our favorite stops were Balanced Rock, Double Arch, Windows and Delicate Arch. We have quite the experience at Delicate Arch.

IMG-1959.jpg
IMG-1967.jpg

Delicate Arch, Arches NP's most iconic arch, gets nearly 2 million visitors a year and it's believed it will collapse in the foreseeable future. It's a 3 mile roundtrip hike with 600 feet of elevation gain (think 60 stories) up red slickrock. We tried to thread the needle on some weather... but got caught in it. The kids were kinda sluggish this day and didn't really even wanna do this hike, but we pushed forward. We thought we had this window between what looked like some light rain and some flurries, but the weather totally turned on us. But there's a point where you feel like you can't turn back, ya know? So we pushed forward. As you near Delicate Arch, you have to shuffle around the side of a cliffwall, with a steep drop. You do have about 3 feet, but by this time it's snowy and slushy on the slickrock, mixing with sand, making it slicker. As we a couple passed us in the other direction, they whispered, "You'll have it all to yourselves." Drenched in rain, snow and tears, we did it. We turned the corner and we had it absolutely all to ourselves. There was a boy scout troop coming up behind us, but for a few minutes, we were all alone there. My kids recount it as the worst experience ever, but I think it's important to do hard things. And I'm really proud of everyone for doing it in those crazy conditions. After the hike we drove to an alternate lookout point which is just a 100 foot walk from the parking lot, to torture ourselves with the question of if we shoulda just done that. By then, the snow and rain had completely stopped and the sun was shining. But it if had been easy, would it have been memorable?

So another trip in the rearview mirror, but we loved this one and will absolutely we back to explore more of Colorado and Utah. We just scratched the surface.

Love reading your trip report! We are planning another trip to Utah next year. Last year we did Zion and Bryce and loved Utah SO much... we are from the east coast all our lives, and desert is so cool and unique to us. Next year we'll do Arches, Canyonlands, and Capitol Reef to complete the Big 5. We plan to stay in Moab for a few nights... definitely noting your food recs!

This is a great SUB for the CSP- for any card, really. Yes, you can support him and get 15k pts (I think). But I might encourage you to pause for a month or so. While this great offer won't last forever, he has also opened 3 Chase cards in about 6-7 months. And the usual recommended timing is 1 card every 3 months. I did sort of push velocity with Chase once and the rep was sort of saying in not so many words, hey you're going too fast here. We moved credit around and I was approved, but my guess is a lot of P2s don't wanna make that phone call.

I think you inspired me to start to look in that area! Moab was really cute and easy. There are so, so many great point options. Everything from Fairfield Inn to an Element by Westin to Hyatt Place all looked like they had nice swimming pools.
We really, really, really wanted to stay in this Suite Tent at Ulum Moab, but they weren't open yet for the season. And it turned out to be sorta outta the way.

I'm also a huge fan of trains in Europe -- my fav way to travel.

I highly recommend the Van Gogh museum in Amsterdam. I really enjoyed the MOCO last year and it's easy to get tickets for the same day. If you want a grab-and-go lunch, I love Joe & The Juice (green smoothie is excellent). I love wandering around the Nine Streets and the dePijp neighborhood. Stroopwaffels from van Wonderen are delicious and if you don't mind lining up, I can highly recommend cookies from van Stapele (go before 2:45 during the week because they close when they run out of cookies). The Rijks is worthwhile -- didn't go this year, but did last year and enjoyed it.

Have a great trip -- I LOVE Amsterdam!

My oldest card is a Macy's card, also around 30 years. They've knocked me down to $250 lol, I have over 70K in available credit with other cards but darned if I'm buying anything that costs more than $250 at Macy's!
