And a travel question- we are about a month from booking our Seattle/Vancouver travel. It seems like train or fly are the only ways to get between the two cities for one way travel. Am I right that rental car companies wont let you return across country lines? I think we are coming into WA a week early to do the national parks*, taking the train from Seattle to Vancouver for our cruise, and then flying from Vancouver to Seattle to east coast to get home. I wish the flights from Vancouver to east coast had better times so we didn't have to jump back down to Seattle!

*national parks- Is making time for Cascades worth it? Or should we focus on Rainer and Olympic? Anything else must see in WA/Seattle? We've never been! Its 2 adults and 2 young elementary age kids who tolerate moderate hikes.

Do you mean north Cascades and highway 2? Rainier is in the cascade range so I want to make sure it's what I'm thinking about.

I don't hike so take this for what it's worth. Rainier is pretty to look at, lots of people go but north cascade off highway 2 has more than just the mountain to see and I think would have more hiking options.

One thing you might consider is seeing if you can return the rental and catch the train in/near Bellingham if you do anything off highway 2 or anything north of Seattle. Even Everett would be a good option for that as well.

We had to skip N Cascades due to time and I regret it. Olympic is nice because it has so many different ecosystems- lakes, rain forest, coasts, alpine. That also makes it spread out if you visit it all. My favorites - Hoh Rain Forest and Sol duc Falls hike.

For Mt Rainier, there are plenty of hikes. Favorites - Myrtle falls in Paradise and Grove of the Patriarchs (which unfortunately is closed due to flooding damage). Not sure when you are going but Mt Rainier is requiring timed reservations for summer travel.

We are going next June but thats good to know, I'll have to watch that!

Yes sorry North Cascades national park. Just wondering if we should go for all 3 while we are in the state. I think we will do about 10 days in Washington before we do our Alaska cruise from Vancouver! Taking the train from there is smart! I think I'm hoping to use my Venture X credit for the rental car so I have to wait for that to reset and then I'll see what the options are.

Hi everyone! First time poster, but longtime lurker (off and on for about 3 years)!

I’m on the hunt for 2-3 new CCs. Any recommendations on the best cards that all of you experts think would fit our needs would be greatly appreciated! I will attempt to keep everything as abbreviated and concise but as thorough as possible. We’re a fam of 4 (DD & DS are 8 & 11 currently). I’m P1 and DH is P2.

Upcoming travel:
•July 2024 - FL Gulf beach trip (house is PIF, driving)
•October 2024 - weekend to STL (sponsored biz trip for DH, but we’ll only have to pay for my flight, hotel/meals/transportation included for both)
•Late Q4 2024 - Trip to somewhere cold. DH is in charge and it’s a surprise trip for my 40th. My only request is snow so the destination and travel party outside of immediate family are the surprise. Will be within the USA. Will likely fly.
•April 2025* - group cruise with fam from MIA with 1-night hotel stay, transport unknown
•October 2025* - fam cruise from FLL with 1-night hotel stay, transport unknown
•TBD 4-night cruise (free cruise cert), just 2 adults so will probably fly.
*Important note: the 2 paid cruises are in suites and only the deposits have been made. We’re chasing status and will reach it after these sailings.

Travel bucket list (shortened):
Weekend to DLR (fam), weekend to Chicago (DH+me), a few days in NYC (fam), weeklong Alaska cruise with a couple of days at the beginning to explore the port city/surrounding area (fam) , transatlantic cruise from EU —> USA, see the Fjords, visit Australia.

Cards we currently have:
Only 1 with a date because the rest are 5+ years old. We never carry a balance and auto PIF monthly. Never pay for anything with debit ($30 monthly water bill is drafted as well as CC payments and that’s literally it). My oldest acct was 21 years (closed earlier this year), DH’s is probably around 15 years (biz BOA).
Personal (P1)
•Cap1 QS MC (used for things that DH knows that I do but I don’t want him to know how much it costs, like Botox 🤪)
•07/23 Chase Prime Visa, DH is auth user (used only on Amazon)
Personal (P2)
•BOA Visa Signature (used for ~85% of purchases, I’m an auth user
Business
•BOA Biz Advantage cash rewards (majority of everyday purchases, especially gas, and some dining, 3 CHs which includes an emp)
•FNBO Covetrus MC (supply distributor branded, earns double points and is exclusively used for the brand’s purchases, points value is 1/1¢, accts for ~50% of our spending excluding payroll/taxes which are ACH)

Upcoming purchases:
Personal

•October - homeowners insurance
•November - property taxes x2
•November - 2025-2026 school tuition x2
•late December - April cruise is due
•late June 2025 - October cruise is due
•I’d like to trade in my car.
Business
•1-3 laptops
•a large piece of equipment
•October - insurances
•late December/early January - we purchase all of our major supplies during this time for the following year because the manufacturer rebate is about 8%-12%.
•February - more insurances

We pretty much call all of the rewards vacation money so we’re looking for the highest return of points/cash back that include benefits like airport lounge access, GE/TSAPC, cash back towards travel, free bags. Home airport is ATL. We usually fly Delta and SWA. We love cruises but we also enjoy land travel. I would like to fly more often for travel.

I get bombarded with offers from AMEX, sometimes 3-5 a week. Our biz gets them 3-5x a month. I also get offers from BOA. My credit is around 780-810. DH hasn’t had anything financed in many years so his credit dropped a good bit from 830. I only have 1 car financed, everything else (biz and personal) is PIF. The car trade in is to get a better interest rate (Covid shortage purchase) but I want something slightly larger (Civic—>Accord). It’s also to add DH to the loan to get his credit back up. We’re extremely frugal but will spend money on things we find valuable (like vacations). We don’t eat out very often, not even fast food, but when we do it’s usually a biz meal. I’m also type A and not very impulsive. It took me a year and a half to finally decide to buy an Instant Pot which I did buy impulsively but because it was an 8qt on sale cheaper than the 6qt. I research to find the best deals on things with the best reviews but also calculate the rewards to factor into the final cost of something (like hotels, excursions, etc.).

Thank you for reading and any recommendations!

If that's all your doing and not doing anything in the city it's enough time but you'll want to stay near them to cut down on travel time. There's traffic and it doesn't take much to make it worse and there's more construction in the summer.

Do note it can still snow in June at the higher elevations, it did this year. SR 20 generally opens in may so not crazy snow in June but also don't expect to wear shorts the whole time. We've had a few days we could but it's not normal, it's usually junuary and summer starts July 5

So I will qualify this by stating I am not familiar with BoA cards and how rewarding they are. However, seems to me you have an amazing opportunity to rack up lots of SUBS between you and DH. You appear to have a good level of personal spend as well as a legit business and therefore presumably have the ability to meet MSRs to earn those bonuses.

As you have been lurking for a few years, it will probably come as no surprise that I would encourage you to get into the world of Chase Ultimate Rewards. On the personal side you have the Sapphire and Freedom cards, and then a range of Ink Cards on the business side. By working in tandem with P2, and each of you getting a new card every 3 months or so, referring each other for extra points, you will be able to accumulate a hefty stash of URs. Do not put each other as AUs as this will impact 5/24 count for future chase applications. Chase URs transfer to a number of travel partners, but not Delta.

If your spend would support it, you could simultaneously start to engage with Amex, particularly on the business side. Amex Delta cards have a pretty good offer right now. Alternatively, if you decide to go with Amex Memberships Rewards earning cards - they are also transferable to many travel partners, including Delta. Amex cards also benefit from Amex Offers which will occasionally have cruise discounts for the major operators. I saved about 30% off my upcoming cruise on Celebrity using Amex Offers and I currently have offers for Celebrity and Carnival on my cards.

I could go on and on about the options - but truth is - you need to sit down and work out what benefit you are getting from your BoA cards and then see where you can do better. Unfortunately loyalty rarely pays when it comes to earning credit card rewards. Many folks here will open a new card every few months as the SUB is the most lucrative earning opportunity. After a year or two, those cards get closed to make way for future applications. Maybe we all have one or two long term keeper cards for various reasons, but the focus is always on the next SUB.

One more thing - whilst you might have the spend to open lots of new cards - a sudden barrage of credit inquiries will not be seen favorably by lenders so you need to pace yourself. However, 4-5 new cards each for both P1 and P2 every year is doable with the right mix of personal and business.

Welcome! You should be able to accumulate a lot of SUB and support pts with a P2 and a biz in play. I don't know anything about using pts/rewards for cruises, so I will let some of our cruisers give you that advice. To maximize pts for your existing plans, I would probably focus on one pts currency at first and amass SUBs/support pts for airfare and hotels.

Since you are in ATL, consider starting with AmEx MRs since they transfer to Delta. Delta's redemptions are definitely a lot more than other airlines for biz. However, you should be able to find decent redemptions for domestic economy. For the biz, you might want to consider the AmEx Plat Biz. There is a 150K SUB for $20K/3 mos. Just be sure to confirm that your vendors take AmEx for those big purchases before applying. You could also see if you can get a good SUB for the personal Gold or Plat. Then you can support P2.If you've been lurking, you probably know that AmEx SUBs are not static and there are lots of tips about how to find the highest available offer.

I like UR for hotels because you can transfer to Hyatt and they usually have the best redemption rates. However, I have also been able to get really good value out of the co-branded Hilton and Marriott card SUBs. I did a personal and biz for each of those.

Towards the end of this year/beginning of next (or end of 2025) you may want to go for a Southwest Companion Pass for you and/or P2. That will amass you a lot pts to play with plus each of you could take one of the kids free each time you fly.

As you have probably already read, there is no right way to do this hobby. I focus on SUBs, so my advice is focused on that strategy. Good luck!

What's a good SUB right now? We are not qualified for the Chase Sapphires (less than 4 years for both P1-P4). Anything else is open as a possibility.

Is 200k for the AMEX Business Platinum a good SUB? If so, how long will the open window for the offer remain? If I leave it open for a few hours while I take a shower and think about it, will it remain available? Or do need to act now?

DH and I do not have any AMEX's with an AF. I am an AU for my Dad's traditional gold AMEX (1971). Dad also got a new Gold Amex a few months ago.

Itching for a new card, not working on a MSR is painful.

It's a great offer, but not the highest ever. At one point it was 300k, which is just crazy. But I think that's expired now. Highest now is probably 250k.

If you leave the window open, the offer might expire and change. I've seen DP of that in terms of it getting better(!), but never tried it. I've been able to pull up the same offer the same way if not too much time has passed (same day or next day). But with Amex, I guess you never know!

I have the OG $49 AF, the $99 personal and the $99 Biz. I’m planning to churn the biz since I can’t get the OG card again and I’d have to cancel to churn the personal.

P2 can churn both personal and Biz. So far I’ve been able to book FNCs from his account and use when I travel. Maybe that luck will run out if they start cracking down. I’ll keep pushing my luck for now.

I was just trying to use all my FNCs on upcoming travel. Based on how I’m now traveling, it is getting hard to use. I thought I might use one in Switzerland next year but rates were 80-100k per night o_O .

I prefer points over FNCs for SUBS for the no expiration as well. More flexible.
can you get the biz more often that 1x/24 months?

We were there last month and stayed at the Intercontinental, it was perfect location and an outstanding hotel. I kept checking rates several times per week as we got closer to our dates and was able to get the room for $250, tax included. We added on club level at check in for $100/night and it was well worth it. As others have said, it's a very walkable city, we averaged 9 miles per day, so bring good shoes.
Thank you. They don't have rooms for my dates, but I will keep checking.

DH took this offer a few months ago. We're about $600 away from meeting the spend. Also got another 10K to adding an employee card, so we did that, too. This was his second Biz Plat.

Well, it was 2004, but we definitely rented a car in Vancouver and returned it in Seattle the same day. (We took the train from Seattle to Vancouver, then drove back after our cruise.)

quoting myself to ask more clearly... iI was gonna do Hyatt SFO but it doesn;t seem super convenient, have to take the train to get to it even tho it's in airport? I'm confused.... but the local Hiltons either don't run airport shuttles, or only very limited hours.... But I could use my (expiring soon) FNC for a night there..... advice?

It's been years since I stayed at the HR SFO (if that's the one you're looking at) but we did it because we had an early flight out of SFO and could leave the car there. They did have a frequent and efficient shuttle to the airport and back. Do they not have a shuttle now?

The GH SFO is at the airport so no shuttle needed, but it's a higher category. Haven't tried it yet. Hope this helps.

ETA - if you're asking about the Grand Hyatt SFO it is at the airport. You can walk or take the Air Train (it's just a tiny airport train that goes from one terminal to the next). It's not a real train and the GH is incredibly convenient. It's confusing because there are two airport Hyatts.

I can't remember 100%, but I know DH did not go into a branch. He most likely did it by SM, as he hates to call. I think he asked by SM what the correct procedure was to close his savings acct, and they basically said take out all the money and reply back to have it closed.

I’ve closed checking and savings by SM.
Thank you both for the information. I will try that this week. Time for P2 to get the bonus.

Waldorf Los Cabos Pedregal standard award availability is pretty open throughout the year with varying minimum stay requirements. Booked 5 nights with 5th night free and wanted to add another night with an FNC. Standard award is not available as a single night, but is as 6 nights. Called, but the rep couldn't do it either.

Anyone run into this before with Hilton? Guess I'll set up an alert and hope it's eventually available as a single night.

Has anyone stayed at the Hyatt Churchill in London?

Looking at booking a stay, but concerned about not all rooms being renovated (hotel said they didn't do all the rooms because some people like 'classic' decor :confused3). I am not a globalist, so no lounge access for me (can purchase for 120 GBP / night and the lounge doesn't have a hot breakfast -- no thanks!). Since I need 2 rooms, would book 1 on points, other with a Prive agent for breakfast and possible room upgrade.
