Does anyone have any "retention offers for dummies" they could share with me? I just got into this game a year or so ago, and have my CSP AF hitting this month or next, and my Amex personal gold in March. I am clueless when it comes to asking for a retention offer so hoping someone could share some guidance. Thanks!
I like to use the chat function as well for Amex. You can select "cancel a card" from the options or type it (it won't actually cancel the card).
You: I'm considering canceling my ____ card, ending in _____.
Rep: Let me transfer you to the special dept. Transfers...
You: I'm considering canceling my ____ card, ending in _____ due to the high annual fee.
Rep: Usually lists the card benefits
You: Thank you for recapping the card benefits. In the next year I don't believe I'll be able to take advantage of those benefits and due to the high annual fee, I'm still considering canceling the card.
Rep: Might list more benefits or benefits you've used or may give you an offer.
You: Are there any incentives to encourage me to keep the card open, such as a statement credit or additional points?
Rep: Offer or "there are no offers on your card at this time"
I like to search reddit r/churning using the search function to look for data points specific to that card, so I go into the chat knowing what I want and what I would/would not accept. If you don't like the offer provided, just say you'll give it some thought. You can try back again.
Often when accepting an offer, you are agreeing to keep the card open another 12 months, so be mindful of that.
