I love credit cards so much! v5.0 - 2022 (see first page for add'l details)

Thanks!

I think I'd first send your DH a "support link" (aka "prefer" minus the p because the mods are weird about the "r" word ) to your DH from your CSP for him to obtain a CSP-that way you earn a bonus and he'll earn the SUB which is 60K right now for $4K spend (not the highest, historically but not bad). If he's approved you'll earn 15K so together that's 75,000 Ultimate Rewards which are good for Southwest (domestic flights) as well as transfer to Flying Blue/KLM (which can get you to Europe from DTW) or United (flights from ORD). I'd then consider the freedom unlimited for the 1.5 multiplier for the remaining spend-right now the MSR is $500 for $200 back (or 20000 Ultimate Rewards plus the $1000 spend so another 1500 URs which then can be transferred via your CSP-chase sapphire preferred) to either Flying Blue or United (or Marriott, Hyatt, etc...) when you need them. That's the first $5K spent. Obviously I'm looking long term at stockpiling URs for Europe flights-those usually open 11-12 months ahead of time AND don't expire if you keep them as Ultimate Rewards and don't transfer to the frequent flier programs.

It can take a lot of miles/points to get to Europe with an entire family so collecting slowly and keeping them for that purpose takes some discipline. The above play should earn your DH 64,000 (SUB + 4000 from spend), 36,500 for you (SUB+spend+ 15000 from the preferral). So once y'all combine that should be 100,500 URs. Economy saver awards from ORD-MUC (or other locations in Europe) begin at around 30-33k/pp/one way (but can be as much as 70K for nonstop) so you're looking at almost getting there for 4 with that haul. Flying Blue is a little less predictable but I've found 2 A 2K 1 way from DTW to CDG for 52, 500 flying blue miles next July so depending on your dates 100,500 URs could get you a RT to Europe.

Anyway, those are my thoughts...fortunately you're going to have several tuition payments to make so can tweak as necessary, although please keep Chase's 5/24 in mind because that is definitely a rate limiting rule!
I found a link for the chase freedom from nerdwallet/pointsguy for an extra 1.5% cash back the first year on top of the 1.5% you already get. Also there is an introductory 0% apr for the first 15 months. That would be very helpful for keeping his tuition payments on the card until we get reimbursed.

I can make two payments of $5000 each but I'm not sure if there is a penalty/surcharge. So far I've been covered by the GI bill and not made any payments. No 2nd player.

Thank you so much for your help. Can I apply and use the CSP then cancel it, do the same for the CSR and then do it all again each time I make payments? Also, how do I keep track of my points when I cancel cards?
No you can’t do that…Chase will only give the bonus on Sapphire cards…the CSR and CSP once every 48 months.

It’s Also recommended you leave a card open at least 1 year before closing it so the bank does not claw back the points…

Here's a DP from my friend....(who doesn't listen well lol) She got the CSP a while back with the 100k offer, used my support link- last month she got curious and wanted another UR cc,to max spending.... so I sent her the support info with clear instructions ,for the flex.:sad2: Next thing I know, she's texting me to tell me she accidentally app'ed for the FU.... sigh ok not the biggest deal, I just texted back no problem, in 3 months blah blah (the flex has the cellphone insurance) the next day she texts to tell me she decided to call in,and got a rep to also approve her for the flex! That kind of surprised me,that they did it. And I'm assuming of course she won't get the bonus associated with that one now either, but I didn't bother telling her that..... maybe b/c she only has these 3 cc's?

At least she had no fear of calling in!

I have found it very easy to shift credit around on Chase business cards by SM. Just asked to move all the CL from one of DH's cards to another and close it, but they left $500 on the card they closed. Fine by me. They also tried to call him, but since it was a toll free number he didn't recognize, he didn't answer. They did the move and close anyway!

Heading to London tomorrow. Looks like our Dulles to Heathrow flight should go OK. Travel makes me very nervous right now!
We just got home from London! Our flights were direct from Chicago to Heathrow. We had no issues!

First trip to Staples complete, converted to money orders, deposited at WF. The vanilla visas now have something extra on the back for security and the cards were yellow.

And my FHR $200 credit hit fast which is good since my vanilla Platinum is getting canceled soon. Unfortunately, I never got the 20,000 MRs for adding pay over time back in May:(

Need advice on my mom's points!

We transferred all of her Chase UR points to my dad so there is no point balance on her freedom, sapphire, and ink cards anymore. However, I didn't realize we couldn't transfer the airline/hotel points the same way. She has Southwest, United, Marriott and Hyatt cards through Chase with the highest point value being on the Southwest card (130,889). Rapid Rewards charges a $5/500 point fee to transfer points to other people so it would cost $1310 to transfer all of those points.

My dad is planning to call Chase next week and report my mom's death/close her accounts. Two of the cards have annual fees due and my dad can't cancel them without saying he is the estate executer. We need to decide in the next few days if it is worth paying to keep the points or take the loss. My dad also wanted to call Southwest and see if they would be nice but would risk them cancelling the account.

I personally plan on flying Southwest a lot in the next couple years.

Hmmm....this sentence has me wondering if the points can still be used by family:

"Points may not be transferred to a Member's estate or as part of a settlement, inheritance, or will. In the event of a Member’s death, his/her account will become inactive after 24 months from the last earning date (unless the account is requested to be closed) and points will be unavailable for use.

I mean, why would they keep them active for up to 24 months if they couldn't actually be used? Transferring them would be using them. The Rapid Rewards account and the credit card are two separate entities.

Closing the credit card with Chase will not have an effect on the points, usually. Rapid Rewards is through Southwest, not Chase although they are earned through Chase.

this is what I found for Marriott on their website:

https://help.marriott.com/s/article/Article-22910

for Hyatt, this is what the chat lady quoted:

In the case of documented death of a Member, points (but not elite status or awards) are transferable on a one-time basis to one (1) person sharing the same residential mailing address as the deceased Member. Receipt of points in such a transfer requires the recipient to be a Member. (Hyatt will have no responsibility for any disputes related to the transference of the points of a deceased Member and, in the event that Hyatt receives competing transfer requests from more than one (1) person sharing the deceased Member’s residential address and such dispute cannot be resolved to Hyatt’s satisfaction, Hyatt may refuse all transfers and void the deceased Member’s points.)

You'l need to "submit the request to consumeraffairs@hyatt.com . It is not something that can be requested by phone as it will require documentation."

Hope this helps for hotel points, I'll leave Southwest and United to other people who use their programs.
I would suggest if your father doesn't have an account with Marriott and Hyatt, to set him up with one OR if you or a sibling who still have your parents' address do, then perhaps use yours. I know Marriott wants a "seasoned" account for normal transfers.

I'm looking for some reassurance before P2 applies for Chase Ink Business Cash CC:
I can use CIC to buy Visa gift cards at Staples for 5% back, then use the Visas to pay for my daughter's college tuition? (Her school does allow CC payments for 2% fee)
The CIC earns UR which can be combined with points already in his UR account?
Any DP on how long it takes to be approved for CIC? (Need to make tuition payment by Aug. 12)

edited to correct acronym

My last two were approved same day. And yes, you’ve got it.

If he has access to her Chase account, he can close them by secure message. Just write "Please close account ending in xxxx" and they should do it. Personally, I wouldn't mention the estate info. If you can use up the RR points, maybe you can just continue to book through your mom's SW account.

CIC approved in a couple days for me, but i do have chase ink cards. it did take a week for them to ship me my card though.
just make sure ur DD's college accepts multiple payments. one of my colleges would only accept 2 payments.
CIC will earn UR. then u can combine to whomever's UR account (same household)

Thanks to those who provided tips on next cards to get earlier in the year. I ended up get the AMEX Platinum for the 150k MR and hit my spend in a couple months. It was my first AMEX card, but it isn't one I'll be keeping long term so I'll be looking at PCing it likely to the AMEX gold early next year. Since I haven't had the gold card before, should I apply for that one now to get the bonus before I would PC the platinum next February? Other things I'm planning to do, PC my CSR (over 4 years old) to a CFF in November, then apply for a new CSR in January.

These steps would put my applications from the last 4 years plus next year something like this:
02/19 - CHASE Southwest Priority
03/22 - AMEX Platinum
07/22 - AMEX Gold
11/22 - PC CSR to CFF
01/23 - New CSR
02/23 - PC AMEX Platinum to Gold

Any issues or risks with this plan?

He doesn't need to tell them she passed in order to close a CC. As others have said, just message from her account to please close. They will. My dad passed away 9 years ago and my mom never notified any accounts which were joint (and had her name). She just left them alone. We eventually closed any that were dad's name only but credit cards didn't require notification of death. Health club membership, don't get me started. I got into an argument with them because they said he must cancel in person. Um not possible. We went round and round on that with the manager finally agreeing on a 'one time exception.' Yep, pretty sure he won't die twice. 🙄
As for the points, once the CC statement closes the points are in the hotel or airline account and no longer associated with the CC. Leave them open, and use them as you need them. I wouldn't notify them of her passing. If they allow family points pooling, like Hilton, your dad can open his own rewards account and transfer her points to his account.
Hugs to you all and good luck.

I would recommend as others have to just close the cards via secure message. The SW points will remain in her account, and you can continue using them to book flights for yourself. That’s one of the great things about rapid rewards, being able to book award flights for someone else.

If I understand correctly, the Ink cards earn "cash back" but to realize a higher value from them I convert to URs? Is the cash back /URs only paid upon your anniversary? Or monthly like normal credit card points are paid?

When my dad passed, we had any points that could be transferred without a fee to my mom’s accounts. Those were UR points, and Radisson Rewards points. British Airways allows household pooling of points so my mom could still use the points. American Airline and United Airline points couldn’t be transferred without a fee. The airline credit cards in his name were closed but there was no reason to close the frequent flyer accounts.
