@Haley R - they are also discussing how to get meals to at risk students who depend on school lunches and breakfasts and after school meals. They already do a limited amount during snow storms and other severe conditions, but not recently since we haven't had any storms this year.

Looks like Kentucky is doing something similar now.

NCAA tournament is cancelled. So sad about this. Not understanding why they didn't just postpone.

Month long event, multiple locations. Finalsb graduation etc. These are students first even if they don't all see it that way.

Gov just ordered all schools in the same 3 counties as the 250 or less events to close schools til april 24.

I get being concerned the kids but we've got to remember who these kids live with or visit or they themselves could be compromised. Along with those that work in schools. Nothing like this has happened before and hopefully they learn from this how to handle it in the future. But I don't want to end up like Italy with our hospitals full. Also just because there's no known cases wherr you are doesnt mean they aren't actually there.

I'm ready to switch to running outside in the cold and the rain instead of at the gym because I never trust people at the gym to start with. Not happy about it but it's what makes sense to me. It might also be time to make mom stay home but we'll see, things aren't as busy in the morning but she forgets she's actually 72.

By the numbers: Prek to High school public school kids
Maryland - almost one million
Virginia - over 1 and 1/4 million
DC - about 50,000

So within a few miles, 2 and 1/2 million kids...

Private schools - about 10% of the above numbers - so, will some of these large private schools close?

Special needs kids - 10 to 20% of the above numbers depending on county - who is going to care for them?

Uuuuuuugh. I had to get groceries today and our store was almost completely out of frozen vegetables (they’re also on sale, so that contributed too I’m sure) and the lines were almost to “thanksgiving” levels.

DH still thinks that the whole virus thing is being blown out of proportion and that all the cancellations, etc are over the top. We are supposed to be going over to Wisconsin Dells in 2 weeks for a mini spring break. We are supposed to be going to wdw in the end of May and I’m really hoping things are not in their current state by then.

I fully expect Michigan to close their schools over this weekend or next week if any more cases pop up, and like other have said, that will be horrible for my county because pretty much 75% of our student population is free/reduced lunch and child care is already an issue in our area (as in....you should get on a waiting list before you start trying to get pregnant).

Not sure if anyone here heard, but the wife of the Cdn Prime Minister is awaiting test results and he (the PM) is self-isolating while they wait. She returned from a speaking engagement in the UK and was feeling unwell, so got tested. He said she's feeling better today, but will remain isolated until they get the results. So sad.

Schools closed here. Companies having staff work from home. I sent DH to stock up on some food (we bought a lot 2 weeks ago but have been eating it!). He said the sense of panic in Costco is palpable. They are rationing how much milk and eggs you can buy. Shelves cleaned out. He expects the police will be there soon, he was anxious to get out. He's at Target now, similarly cleaned out. He and my other neighbor are out scouring the stores and shopping for several of our neighborhood families, whatever they find.

I have a mix of cashback and travel points cards. Just opened 2 new cash back for DH and I for the sign up bonus (spend already met), have a Blue Cash Preferred for 6% on groceries, Costco cashback card for 4% on gas (except when Chase Freedom is 5% as it is now), but our travel spending goes on CSR and regular on CFU, both of which go to UR's. Not really changing anything.

Year isn't traveless for me, have a trip in 8 weeks I'm hoping will still happen, have a family trip to Wisconsin in July (we'll be driving but all the kids will be flying), have an Orlando trip in Oct, possible London/Scotland trip in Sept (not booked yet)

Trader Joe's was unreal today after work. The freezer case was bare. The lines went halfway to the back of the store and there was no social distancing:( I'm working from home tomorrow and dd has an appointment I have to go to. Then I'll pick up a few more things.

School here is closed for two weeks. Will be interesting to see "virtual learning." I can't imagine DS will learn anything but we'll say.

Trying hard to look for positive things. All day it was one piece of bad news after another.

This was a question that was posted in another place... but does this traveless year makes u continue to spend to earn travel points or has there been some considerations to switch to cashback cards.

We are going into a recessionary environment. Cash will always be king.

We will likely see some decent CC signup offerings soon. People will heavily pull back their spending (most already have).

My head is just spinning with how fast everything is changing. We are close to Seattle so it's really crazy. Everything is cancelled, schools are closed for 6 weeks minimum. Im honestly not sure at this point how much of the panic is justified from the virus vs from the dramatic response. Either way I'm getting pretty nervous about access to basic supplies in the next few weeks.
My mom lives in her camper and travels. She just got a letter that someone in her current campground tested positive. Her husband is currently undergoing chemo but she insists they haven't been exposed.
Sorry to everyone who has had to cancel plans. It is always disappointing. :sad2:

This is why UR is King. I really do consider them cash back cards and in a pinch I'll cash out at 1cpp like I always did before. I'm happy to continue earning points in the hopes of getting outside value on travel, but if push comes to shove it's our backup to the backup E-fund.

Honestly, we're cutting back hard on our budget. We'll still be putting some money in our retirement but our extra "fun" money that normally would be spent on travel, eating out, or home improvement is going into our savings account for a little while. I had $2k saved to redo our insulation that was going to go on a new CIP and is now going into our emergency fund, which is skinnier than I'd like it to be. My husband works for a church, I work for a solo attorney. Neither of our jobs is rock-solid in an economy where people may soon be cutting back on discretionary spending on legal documents and charitable giving. I will probably shift all the payments I can over to one UR card for now so I can at least get my 1 cpp guaranteed. Or maybe I will go for a CIC or CIU rather than a CIP - I need to look hard at the budget and see what we can do MSR-wise with our bills. I need to get back in the game but not knowing when I'll actually be able to spend the points I earn is holding me back :/

Edited to add: Aaaaand my side gig is closed until April. So that's $300 of fun money I'm not earning this month. Not make or break for us but it's something to consider.

I was planning on getting a CSR in the next month but now I’m not sure if it makes sense. The plan was to book flights for June (for relatives), July for ourselves, and Christmas so the 1.5 would be good. We also were going to book japan tickets in June but that’s probably not gonna happen. Idk if I should be looking for a different card to get?

I saw it on our local news this afternoon. Hopefully she will be up and well soon.

W&M extended spring break for a week and then are going to online learning as well until early April. DD is NOT happy to be home until then. Our half marathon for next weekend was cancelled today. Not that its uber important considering what's going on but still . . . when you train for months . . .

I held my breath and bought some stock this morning. We'll see how that goes . . .

Glad we have wine here!
