Ok, this straw conversation has piqued my interest. A plastics waste ordinance recently went into effect here in SF, which bans among other things restaurants from giving out plastic straws. I’m all for the new law because my kiddo plays at the beach, I’ve volunteered at beach cleanups, and we see firsthand that single use plastics are a real problem for the environment. Together with stories of plastics breaking down to microplastics in our oceans and landfills, making their way into birds’ and sea animals’ digestive systems and even our food chain, and China and other countries no longer accepting our plastic recyclables forcing the whole recycling industry here into a scramble, we’ve been trying to reduce our use of plastic and recycle what we can. We’ve already switched over to metal straws at home and even started taking them on trips. (I think @calypso726 mentioned she brings along metal straws too.) But I haven’t figured out how to take a metal straw with me on my day-to-day in a non-intrusive way, as in not having a metal stick sticking out of my pockets, and then cleaning it after using it at a restaurant so that it doesn’t make a mess of my pants. (“Excuse me while I go to the restroom to wash my straw.”) I guess wiping it down and putting it into a toothbrush container could work until I can clean it at a more convenient time. Almost all the restaurants, cafes and bars I’ve been to in the city this month have switched over to paper straws. I like the idea of paper straws, but they get mushy fast. So if I can figure out a way to bring my own straw with me without looking like a total goofball, I’d do it.
ah straws...what to do.... I have some decent silicone straws here at home which I like, and I dislike the idea of a hard metal or glass straw. I can just see a chipped tooth in my future with those..... when I'm out I just don't use a straw at all,or a paper one if available....

My portable straws each have silicone tips. That way I avoid a potential chipping since the tips are cushioned. It also avoids getting too hot while drinking coffee.

Since we are about an hour away for BWI, DH always on staying the night in the area if we have an early or late flight. We typically stay at the Courtyard or Fairfield Inn across for the FastPark since that’s where we always park our vehicle.

I am not sure how I am going to manage a 6:30 am flight out of DCA which is at least 2 hour drive. Luckily, it’s a laid back girls trip.
it all depends on the trip.... most times we leave on the earliest flight we can,it's just easier. last trip we took a late flight out and stayed at MCO Hyatt that night(technically morning lol) I prefer am flights. Going to HI the airport was two hours away and we did the park/sleep/fly deal using points to drive up the night before, and fly in am. it was perfect.

Omg DH is driving me nuts on trying to book flights to Japan lol. He has a meeting that he knows will be in June 2020 that he SHOULD be at, but doesn't HAVE to be at. So he tells me the other day it's fine to book our trip over when that meeting will fall, it's not a big deal. This morning it's "well I really shouldn't miss it." Then I tell him that it's going to just be a stroke of luck if we get first/business seats to Japan later then, but that there is first class seats to Japan two days before his meeting is scheduled. So then he says "oh, well I really want to fly first class, so maybe we should do that. But I really shouldn't miss that meeting." :sad2: I explained to him that we could get premium economy just about anytime we want to go but he says he really wants to fly first. Well, no promises on that. I'm about to book both of us on premium economy and tell him to suck it up lol.

So none of them have their own account but since I have all their reservation numbers and info in my account for booking, it gives me the option to add them to ADRs and I can choose their MBs and whatnot. I would assume that’s sufficient for me to make their FPs in a week and then give them their reservation numbers and let them create their own account?

FWIW, they all show up as my "Family and Friends."

Honestly unless your family really wants their own account I have found it easier to just keep it all under yours and then just manage all the plans. My parents will come with us every other year or so. Last October when they came when it was time to make FP’s despite the fact that my dad was showing up in MDE as a friend/family the system would not let me book his FP’s. That morning I just had to book for everyone else and then find time to call IT later. He had opened up his own account in the middle of the trip before and for some reason the system would not let me book. Disney IT is really just so bad that anything you can do to avoid having to call is for the best. :)

Thanks! I think what I might do is book FPs for everyone and then have my BIL try to make his own account after that's done and see what happens. I don't mind if he then only has control over the stuff since he is Disney experienced and won't mess anything up. I just don't want to not be able to book all our FPs together. If nothing else, I'll just give everybody my MDE login and they can go in that way and modify stuff if they want to.

I am impressed. How does he know he already know he has a big meeting in June? I am lucky to know about a meeting 3-4 weeks in advance and even then there is a high possibility it would be rescheduled.

@Haley R - You know how the Tokyo Disney parks ruins some of us for all Disney parks? Ok, the Outlander series ruined me for reading  I resisted reading it for 20 years because it didn't sound like anything I'd be interested in at all, despite how many people told me I should read it. It had every element I didn't like, romance, history and time travel 🤮 blech! I finally read it after a friend gave it to me as an FE gift on a Disney cruise. She swore I'd thank her and I gave in because we were very much alike in terms of tastes for movies, books, music etc. Over the years we've discovered we are likely sharing a brain. I've re-read the series 4 or 5 times since 2011 and it remains my favorite book series of all time. I'm an avid reader/book listener. The series has been made into a show on Starz and it is ok but no where near as good as the books. The character development, depth of the story etc, simply aren't there.

@amalone1013 is correct. DH and I both read/listened to the series and were inspired to go to Scotland. We felt like we'd already been there, the writing was so good and we had to see it. That was how I stumbled across travel hacking. ABD announced they were going to Scotland and I wanted to take our first ABD and had no idea how to pay for it because it wasn't in the budget. So basically, DVC led me to a DVC cruise, which led me to a group of lifelong friends, which led me to reading Outlander, which led me wanting to go to Scotland, which led me to travel hacking. Obviously, I fell in love with Scotland and our recent trip was 5th one there since 2013.

I carry around something like this https://tinyurl.com/y5u78zh4
I prefer the two pieces that can be screwed together and are telescopic compared to the collapsible ones. I do have the metal non folding ones but those stay at home. These portable ones are also easy to clean on the go since the bristle brush fits easily in the tiny case. They key chain case is quite convenient. Yup, I've done the "go to the restroom to wash my straw" real quick. It becomes an interesting conversation starter with fellow patrons, your dining companions and the wait staff.
I’m gonna have to add it to my list of books to read! I typically read all young adult science fiction or fantasy so it sounds like something I’d enjoy.

No one in my family wants to split the cost of a VIP tour. I asked SO if we could just pay for it and take the teens and a 9 and 6 year old with us and he said that sounds awful. He would rather us just do it alone, but I said that’s an awful value for just two people. I really can’t blame him because the teens are all moody. My sister complained the entire time when we took her to Disney her feet hurt. My other sister and my cousin get in so much trouble when they are together. My brother tries to parent them because they are off the walls but he makes it worse. My SOs cousins probably wouldn’t want to go. lol The 9 year old tries to act like the teens and just annoys them. The 6 year old probably would be the only one without any issues lol She can be wild because she is a kid but she doesn’t do anything crazy. SO is probably right we should skip it lol maybe one day when we have kids.

Your SO is right. That just sounds awful!

I can't think of a worst value than spending money on ungrateful kids who complain and make trouble the entire time it's costing you money.
