I have to share this!

So, are you sure there wasn't a camera in her purse? Maybe you were being punk'd!

Great story! My dad is a retired teacher and I've heard parents say some crazy things, but this is tops!:rotfl:

Please update after the meeting Monday with the principal (I'm laughing just thinking about it!).

:hyper: The giggles have begun!!!

I can't WAIT to hear how it goes with the principal!!!

Hysterical and sad all at the same time. :sad2:

Yes, please tell us how it goes with the principal!

:teeth:

My aunt teaches HS history and I can't wait to tell her this story! She would get a real kick out of it!

Thanks for the great laugh tonight!!! Good luck on Monday!

I'd like to sit in for your tequilla lessons, please!

:hyper: :hyper: :hyper:

Laughing so hard I almost puked!

LOL - My grandmother would say "She ain't got the brains that God promised a Billy Goat!":p

From one teacher to another--we have all had parents to deal with, but I think this has to be right up there in the top 5!!!!!!!!

As we always said when I taught alternative ed, how do you ever describe our days and what goes on to someone not in the alternative ed business????????? Oh well, just another day in paradise!

Please, please keep us posted. You are amazing for being able to maintain self-control. I think OP should become a moderator!

What happens when you teach the class about Prohibition? She may come back, upset that you are teaching the kids it's okay to drink, since Prohibition was repealed. ;)

Good luck with this parent - sounds like it's going to be a loooong year.

I'm on my way out the door but I had to say that I will definitely update everyone Monday afternoon. I emailed our curriculum coordinator and asked her to sit in on the meeting also - I really want as many people to hear this first hand as possible. Otherwise, who will ever believe me when I'm an old teacher telling war stories!;) And no, I haven't clued the principal in to what was going on. He was out of the building anyway and I'm very curious to see how he comports himself. He is one of those very gruff, take-no-nonsense, former coach kind of guys. That will definitely be worth the meeting!

I will be taking registration for those interested in tequilla classes on Monday as well. Please be in your seats when the bell rings!

You know in the mom's defense, at least she is trying to be informed about the curriculum.

Also did you ever stop to think that this mom's IQ may be quite a bit below average? She may not have the intellectual capacity to understand what you are telling her.

I think the OP has the experience to differentiate between someone who's truly unable to comprehend and someone who's just uneducated.

She (that mother) reminds me of someone I met when I was in London touring St. Paul's Cathedral. She was from New England (I won't say what state, as I'm quite sure she was NOT a representation of what most people there are like :) ) Anyway, the tour guide was showing us places where the cathedral was damaged during WWII and told how members of the congregation actually got on the roof during attacks and knocked off incindiary bombs before they could set the building on fire. The woman was just shocked and blurted out (not once, but over and over, "Why would they bomb a CHURCH? I just don't understand why anyone would bomb a church!" Well, the poor guide tried to explain it to her, but she could couldn't believe that anyone would actually drop bombs on a place of worship. Her husband tried to shush her, but she kept on muttering to him, "Honey, why would anyone bomb a church?" I did not get the idea that she was low functioning. I did get the idea that she had likely been one of those girls in high school that are too busy primping and flirting in class to listen to all the boring icky stuff about war and death. ;)

Laurie, who can't wait to hear how the principal reacts in the meeting!

sorry, but I would have burst out laughing!! great self-control to wait until after she left. And at least you have a witness to the conversation for further defense!!!

Wow~ that's actually pretty sad! But as ripleysmom said, at least she's trying to be informed about the curriculum. I wonder if the daughter tried to explain this to her mother also. I would think it would be hard for the daughter to go through life dealing with this on a daily basis!

I give the OP a ton of credit for handling the situation so professionally! While it could make for some laughs, it's pretty mind boggling and sad that someone could think like this, even after the explanation, complete with text books to back up the explanations.

:( I know you said you laughed about it after the fact, but you remained professional during the original meeting and that's what's important. If someone truly has an "IQ-deficit", then it wouldn't be funny to them! (was that a new politically correct term...IQ-deficit???

:) ) My hat's off to you teachers for all you do!!!!!!!

leighe, don't worry about describing that lady. I already have a picture in my head.

I wonder if this lady has ever been on the Jerry Springer show - that's what I'm picturing.

that was exactly my first two thoughts! On the one hand, very funny.....on the other hand, very sad.

I am curious to see if she does show up on Monday for the next meeting. Please let us know how it goes. If she is truly trying to be involved in her child's eduacaitonal experience, maybe she will research it over this weekend and realize what you were teaching????? Or....maybe not.

I have to give you credit for how you handled yourself. I would have definitely thought that someone was playing a practical joke on me!!!!!

Just curious......how many of you posters laughing at this woman really knew what "The Age Of Absolutism" meant if the OP hadn't given an explanation????

well, JB you're right, but at least I "absolutely" knew that it isn't about vodka and if I remember some of my history, it's something about the English/Russian Monarchy.
