For our first family trip to WDW, we did a YC-CR split. I find the Disney resorts to be very expensive for what you get, even with an AP discount. I was hoping that I'd come back thinking that the on-site resorts were not worth the money. WRONG! Even DTD seemed too far from the "magic." I loved being cocooned in the World. We had a car, but even when we drove to the resorts, we were driving past only wooded space or landscaped areas. We had to find a Walmart once and it was jarring to see all the motels, strip centers, etc. again.
So yes, now I now why so many people are willing to spend so much $$$ to stay onsite.
