I have a really GROSS question about dogs....

Whoa!

Rink had an anal gland infection a few months ago.
The Vet never mentioned this to me!

I've never heard of it before!
I can't believe he never mentioned it.

Let me guess, Shih-Tzu? If Scruffy isn't taken care of about every 2 months it's absolute misery. His favorite place to express them is either on the sofa or in my Mercedes on the may to the vet! :rotfl:

I read that if the stool is firm then the glands get squeezed every time they, ...... uh..... squeeze one out. But if the stool is loose then there is no force to squeeze the glands.

Freddy has always been less than firm. Nervous stomach I guess, even with the most bland food. Well since he is a nervous dog he gets scared at anything. And tenses up, and .... yep. He squirts. Once in the wifes car!!!! Luckily it was on a carpet we could throw out. He is much better lately.

Our vet has a spray. Antiseptic and deodorant. He comes home with no smell at all.

Mikeeeee

One of the pugs had infected ones and another just had full ones once that needed cleaning ( by the vet ).

I did a little research and found that a little pumpkin each day is good for this.

I buy the cans of Libby 100% pumpkin and give them each a spoonful with their morning kibble. No issues since I started this.

I mentioned this to my vet and she completely agreed.

FWIW I also give them a spoonful of plain nonfat yogurt each day.

They all love the pumpkin and the yogurt, it's the first to go from their bowls.

I would like someone to do this to me :dance3:

My sister has 3 pugs like you and one of hers is at the vet like every other week for her butt squeeze. She's got wicked food sensitivities, so I don't know if my sister has tried the pumpkin on her or not. Thankfully it's not been an issue with my guy or the 2 we're dogsitting for. (knock on wood)

Mine have food sensitivities too, NO WHEAT of any kind in this house. The one used to get terrible ear infections until I decided to test them for food allergies. Luckily the pumpkin doesn't bother them.

My longhair doxie has issues also--easy to do with him--just squirts out--is yucky but someones gotta do it:eek:

My dog has a wheat allergy too. Used to get a terrible rash on his stomach till we switched to wheat free food.

Yes, he's a Shih-Tzu but I've never heard of this.

This might be really gross but uh.. what comes out? I've never found anything around the house :confused3 and the Vet has never mentioned it to me. Seems like something I need to know about, though!

He was so sick he laid outside my bedroom door and refused to move. Took him to the vet, anal gland infection. No mention of this process!

Stinking to high heaven fluid. There is no mistaking that odor.:scared:

Butters used to do it at the window when he would start barking at other dogs.

We have since reduced the barking at the window thing and he has not expressed his glands at the window anymore.

This is so weird that I have never heard of this. He never left my sight at the Vet during his anal gland infection visit other than about 5 minutes to weigh him. They did not tell me they did this and he was not smelly when he came back.

His booty area was shaved, though? They said to try to eliminate him picking around back there.

I have never seen him express his glands in the house, either. I've had him over a year!
I'm almost worried. He's at my parents or else I'd run over to him and feel his booty!

My beagle has this issue occasionally and you cannot miss the smell. Imagine realllllly stinky fish, left out in the sun for days and then hidden under your couch.... it's about 4x times worse than that, lol.

Don't worry!!! My other dog, a collie mix, has no issues.:confused3

No allergies, nothing. She is a perfect dog.

Butters has allergies, eat his paws, eats his hind end, poor thing.:sad2:

Phew. So far, other than a few intestinal issues Rink has been fine. He ate a thing of french fries when he was a few months old (accidentally!) and the oil killed his tummy. I had to take him to the vet to get a shot of something or another because he kept whimpering. Vet said his tummy couldn't digest the grease.

This is definitely good stuff to know, though!

My female Scottie has anal gland issues. Sometimes she will express while sitting on my lap. It is really foul. Paying the vet to do this is priceless. He has a spray to get the stink off.

I've been in the room with the vet when he does this. The fluid seems to be a caramel-colored, oily liquid with a syrupy consistency. And I don't know how my sweet little princess can smell that foul. So nasty.
