I have a really GROSS question about dogs....

My poor Blazer, soft coated wheaten terrier, has this problem right now. He has been on meds for 2 months to a tune of over $200 Per month for his medications. He is on antibiotics, Atopic, tramadol for the pain and when he goes back to the vet for a rectal check, I have to put him on a tranquilzer to calm him down.

It is so sad. I know when he is hurting because he scurrys around the house biting his butt and he can barely sit on the ground.

He also has a hard time moving his bowls which is a problem within itself. It got so bad this time, that they had him on 2 antibiotics during the day.

I pray this goes away soon. I hate to see him in pain. But yes, the vet expresses the glands. and it is horrible smelling.

But he did tell me that most dogs take care of it themselves when they defecate. My dog just has a habitual infection in the rectum.

If this next batch of drugs do not work, they want to send him to a specialist to have a very detailed operation on the rectum:scared1: :scared1:

He is such a big baby I know he will not survive.

Anyone else have a wheaten terrier with these allergy problems?

We had a lab mix once who, without fail, would express his anal glands at the vet's. We'd place him on the exam table and he would just let loose....eeeewwwwww....it was gross:sad2:

My current doggie, a female Boston terrier, has had an anal gland infection. Have you ever tried to hold a warm compress to an unhappy dog's butt?:goodvibes Makes for a great time let me tell ya! Now the vet expresses her glands whenever we are there for check ups and we haven't had any other problems....thank heavens ;)

There is definitely no missing that odor! I talked to the vet about the removal surgery but she is hesitent to tdo it, seems there are issues with incontinence afterwards :( . The caramel colored description above is right on the money too, as is the foul fishy odor. I tell you, the vet doing it is the best $16 I can spend!

I guess I just see it as being part of life as a doggy parent. My boys (beagle and a springer/cocker mix) have problems from time to time. Mostly the Beagle *pewwww*

You dont stick anything in their anus the sacks are little pea sized *when not infected* glads on both sides of the anus, putting pressure on the outside under these glands will generaly cause them to let loose.

We notice if the boys are having the scrunching the butt dance going on and we know its time. into the bathtub or out on the deck for bathtime we go. Careful constant upand out pressure on the base of the glands and poof. Trooper the beagle gets some serious impaction issues so the material is sometimes thicker and such than others. The process may take a couple of times to empty them but man do the dogs seem SOOOO much happier when its over. I give them a bath wash up the bath area, shower for me and its all done.

No big deal :confused3

The dog has a medical problem, he/she is suffering I dont see wasting time or in the case of our vet $30 bucks for them to do what I can do at home. never mind it takes days or a week to get in with the little guy suffering.

I have two golden retrievers and we let the vet handle it when I see them start "the scoot". The vet showed dh how to do it but it's worth the office visit to let him take care of it.

Can we see pics of this 10 week old baby?

When I cleaned up Butters gland mess it was a cloudy liquid.
Still stinks however.:lmao:

This thread is pretty disgusting.:rotfl2:

Well, after all this talk guess where we're headed this afternoon ;)

Unless you know what you are doing, emptying the anal glands are better handled by veterinarians. Normally, they empty on their own when they move their bowels. But sometimes they can become impacted. When you see a dog scooting on their rearend, it is an anal gland problem. Anal glands are located below the rectum at approximately the 5 and 7 o'clock position.

That is what our doctor told us as well. My dog will be scooting on the floor trying to clear them herself. She then proceeds to lick the roof of her mouth. We have the vet clean them.. They take her back and then we hear a lot of crying and she comes out as happy as can be. Also another way you can tell is if the dog is farting more the usual and if it smells worse then usual

This is so weird that I have never heard of this. He never left my sight at the Vet during his anal gland infection visit other than about 5 minutes to weigh him. They did not tell me they did this and he was not smelly when he came back.

His booty area was shaved, though? They said to try to eliminate him picking around back there.

I have never seen him express his glands in the house, either. I've had him over a year!
I'm almost worried. He's at my parents or else I'd run over to him and feel his booty!

It is good that you haven''t seen him express his glands around the house.. because he does that when he does number 2 outside.. but the scooting most dogs don't do it unless they have this problem.

If you don't do it, he'll do it himself by dragging his rear all over your new rug. I saw my little guy dragging his hiney on cement:eek:

Kind of like that commercial (maybe even for carpet cleaners like Stanley Steemer) where there's 2 women in a livingroom talking and the little boy says "Mom! Look at Tobey's new trick!" And the dog proceeds to drag his butt across the carpet. The mom screams out in horror at the new trick. :rotfl:

My MIL is obsessed with dogs' anal glands. She always asks if we have cleaned our dogs' anal glands lately. I always tell her no, that I ask the vet to check them every time we go, just to be sure, and they have never had a problem. I've never seen either of my dogs buttski. The family dog we had growing up would once in a while, but I only saw that happen when she had a "cling-on" that wouldn't drop off.

That is why I always assumed Rink was doing it-- and sure enough everytime I checked he did have a clinger. :rotfl:

I called my dad today and asked him to check Rink's anal glands for me.. that was a lovely conversation. Then I locked my keys in my car and he had to drive over a half hour to bring an extra to me.... and told me in return I could check Rink's anal glands myself :rolleyes1

Its time to express when they start scooting and passing fishy farts!:lmao: I am completely serious. However, I myself draw the line at squeezing anything near or dear to my dogs privates....I give the job to the groomer and it's done. My schnauzer smells delightful after a visit to Camp Canine.;)

ACK!! My dog has been doing this!
I am not touching any glands, anal or otherwise! Will she explode if I do nothing?:scared1:
She just got groomed last week, too, geez why didn't they do it? She's going back, I'll pay for a whole 'nother grooming before I start messing aorund there.

Well, she won't explode but she may wind up impacted and require surgery. :( I had a groomer that I had been using since before Scruffy (we had a Himalayan cat that required grooming). I found that even though he would go in for grooming I was still having to take him to the vet for expression every 2 months or so. Well, I changed grooming facilities and the new one takes care of his stinkyness, thank heavens! This lady is so funny, we had a long talk about that problem before she groomed him for the first time. When I picked him up she didn't hesitate to tell me how full they were ! Now I take him in every so often for a bath just so she'll take care of that unpleasantry for me.
