BARKING dogs. Well, actually, I don't hate the dog, I'm just peeved at her owner. They *never* take either of their two dogs for walks. Instead, when they tore down & constructed their house (next door to us - oh yeah, last summer was so much fun), they enclosed the *entire* yard...not just the back, not just the side but their ENTIRE yard...the fence is right at (in some places over) the legal limit.

Anyway, and they have a doggie-door (oh GOODY) or they let the dog out and the dog BARKs. Often ALL DAY LONG. I go out in my yard - the dog barks. People walk by - the dog barks. The mailman stops his truck - the dog barks. I go out my front door - the dog barks. I get in my car - the dog barks. Ugh.

Stupid dog.
Stupid owners.

Oh so that's were the people who use to live behind me moved to! I feel your pain! :grouphug:

Sounds like those dogs are on top of things....they know every detail that's going on in the neighborhood. My DH's truck was broken into last week, he lost a lot of money, if our dog would have barked maybe that wouldn't have happened. But no, we are too busy trying to make our dog stop barking so he doesn't disturb the neighbors and we've NEVER had anyone say anything to us about our dog except how friendly he is! Someday, that dog may bark b/c it sees and/or hears an intruder at YOUR home and could deter them. At least you don't have foolish cat owners for neighbors, always letting them out to go to the bathroom in our flower beds, ripping insulation out from under your house, screaming in heat out your bedroom window all hours of the night, which are just a few of the things me and all my neighbors have talked about and had to deal with b/c of cats.

Stupid cats.
Stupid owners.

I have a barker so I do hear your pain. She barks if anyone walks past the house, even if it is across the street. Last week I had a strange man ring our bell. The dog made such a racket I couldn't even hear what he was saying but he kept backing down the walkway and just left. I do feel better knowing no one can sneak up on us. If shes in the yard and barking, I do let her in.

I cant say enough about double pained windows. I never hear anything. If I am outside I hear the next door neighbors little yappers, I hate little dogs they freak me out and their bark is grating. I have big dogs but only one takes the time to bark and only when the doorbell rings. No big deal. We got waverunners stolen and not a sound inside our house or from our dogs. If you ever replace your windows go for the double pained ones. I have never been disturbed by any noise inside my house.

I feel your pain. Irresponsible (or lazy) dog owners can make my blood pressure shoot up faster than anything else. :headache:

Unfortunately, we have four of them in the immediate vicinity. :sad2::headache:

But if the dog barks at *everything* (a leaf, a door slam, a car driving-by, neighbors talking in the next yard and so on), what use is it as any kind of deterrent? This dog next door just has no discernment.

Yeah, 1stluvispooh, this must be where your old neighbors went :cool2: .

I have a dog that barks at everything (howls actually, he is a beagle). We have tried everything to get him to stop. Besides a shock collar which made him so terrified he wouldn't move (we won't be using that again!), nothing has worked. When someone can figure out how to make a dog stop barking, please let us know. We are not "stupid" owners, we honestly have tried everything. He is a very well trained dog other than the barking!

BTW, I do feel badly for the OP. We do take our dog back in the house if he gets too noisy outside.....but even if he is inside you can still hear him howling away. So annoying.....

I have a bit of a yapper too. A sheltie and she is the perfect dog other than the barking....which I sometimes wonder if she does just to announce herself to the world :). Anyway, I'm grateful for her attentiveness to me and DD and the barks when the door rings, etc. and I do bring her in if she gets too crazy in the yard, but I too am open to suggestions on stopping the barking at birds, squirrels, neighborhood walkers, etc.

There is a natural deterrant for barking dogs that our vet suggested when we got our dog as a puppy.

It is a spray collar they wear around their neck and when they bark it poofs a puff of a citronella smelling spray in front of their face. Doesn't harm them, it's all natural and does nothing but deter them from barking.

He said he's used it on several dogs and recommends this highly.

2 of our neighbors have used similar products on their dogs (lab, and yorkie) and they worked marvelously!

Worth a try. :goodvibes

I hate barking dogs too...thankfully I live in the country and don't have many neighbors!! I let my dogs bark now if they are outside but when we lived in the subdivision I would make them come inside if they barked.

I've read that dogs who bark incessantly don't get enough outside exposure. They need to be walked everyday to get them used to different sights/sounds/people.

Could that be a part of the issue with your dog?

Also, it's natural for dogs to bark when someone comes to the door or close to the house, the territorial thing. When they keep barking even when you indicate to them that everything's ok, try distracting it with a treat so that they learn not to be obsessed with the door noises. My sister's dog goes crazy at the doorbell, and won't stop, but I think it's because she over-reacts to him, saying stop, saying his name 50 times, getting all hyper, which the dog picks up on and makes him bark more.

I'm far from a dog expert, but since I got my dog, I've been watching a lot of Cesar Millan.

It doesn't matter. Conventional wisdom is that robbers will generally bypass a home if there is a barky dog.

To the OP, as irritating as it must be, as long as the dog isn't out and randomly barking in the middle of the night, I don't really see the issue.

Where we used to live, we had neighbors who kept a poor dog chained in their back yard 24/7. They owned the poor pit solely to make him fight and really had no concern for him otherwise. (We eventually got the dog away from them and ensured that it was rehabbed, but that's a different story.) He would bark his head off and lunge at you if he spotted you outside. I soon fixed the problem, however. You see, every time that we would go outside, we would toss a milkbone at him. Soon he was greeting us with a waggly tail stub, rather than viciousness.

I'm going to try this :)

Not to hijack the OP's thread, but my doggie gets lots of outside time. I go for walks with her at least 2x/day, she plays outside with DD, she goes everywhere with us that she can. I think some of the barking issue is just part of her breed (shetlie). I only have to tell her "quiet" once, but I think I am going to give that cintronella sprayer that another poster suggested a try? Maybe it will help?

This is just to show how more and more people should NOT be owners of pets.

Oh I feel your pain! We have two dogs (sort of behind us, there is a street and a walking/bike path between our houses) that are let outside early in the morning and are in the yard all day barking at everyone and everything that goes down the road or the path! :scared1: I can hear them in my house with the windows (yes, they are double paned) closed! I just don't understand why one would buy dogs and just ignore them all the time?

Well, there goes my theory!

I have found an AMAZING barking solution. I have two dogs that used to bark a lot but would stop when I said something. Unbeknownst to me they were barking while I was away and I was told by the landlord if I did not stop the barking they would have to go. I tried the spray collar but there was no way to tell if the spray went in. Tried a shock collar but it made a sore on Mattie's throat.

What I found works best is a sonic deterrent. It looks like a bird house when it detects barking it emits an unpleasant sound that only dogs can hear. It has worked miracles! I've not had any other complaints since. When we go to visit my parents (where tehy don't have a barking deterrent) my dogs almost never bark and their dog barks his head off. I can't say enough good things about it.

OP: It is designed for outdoor use (I couldn't wait for the time to ship the indoor one) and can detect barking up to 50 ft. I would put it at your fenceline and that should shut the little doggie up.

I don't care if it's during the day, a constantly barking dog can be a real nuisance and just about drive you nuts. The OP has a right to enjoy her house/yard without this constant nuisance.

Well, there goes my theory!

Sorry....I honestly think it's just her breed. I'm a SAHM, so she's not alone all day and bored...she's in with me most of the time. I just think she likes to hear herself talk......kinda like DD ;):lmao:
