I Hate Fireworks!!!

My cousin trains and boards horses, not the most tolerant animals to BOOMS. Her neighbors were setting them off, illegally, and when she went down there to explain why she'd like them to stop she got an earful.

She ended up calling the sheriff.

I agree that holiday displays are nice, but dealing with the noise for a couple of weeks gets to you. If it's during a drought, then they are stupid and should pay for it (fined).

Personally, I love fireworks--the big, showy display fireworks at Disney or for major celebrations where they are let off by professionals who know what they are doing. When I was growing up, you could go to the corner store and purchase fireworks and let them off at home. After a number of accidents, local stores are no longer allowed to sell fireworks. There are always a few who manage to circumvent the law--my feeling is that if they want to see fireworks so badly, they should go downtown and view one of the major fireworks displays!

In my area, fireworks that shoot and go boom, just became legal this year. Thus, people are going crazy. I don't mind them, but my huge dog does. What I don't like is them going off at 2am. A normal time, like 10-1130 is fine, but not 2am.

I'm with you. I've never hated them before but our state law changed this year and it is totally out of control... Any idiot can go down to the temporary shop set up in a parking-lot tent and buy pretty much anything, and the teen/young adult men in my neighborhood have been setting them off for weeks already. It is way too dry for it, and the noise is obnoxious.

:wave2: ::yes:: it's not the cautious, mature adults using them.

on a related note, dd (5 and well-traveled to Disney) asked why the fireworks were broken. she couldn't hear the music :rotfl:

I live where fireworks can do some damage by causing fires so I can take them or leave them, but my husband LOVES them. He was born on the 4th of July. And I understand they are a huge source of income for local charities. I wish they would change it so they sell them for new years. We have snow at New Years and always save a few for then. They are beautiful with the snow and do not cause the danger at that time of year.

I agree with the OP. I love a good fireworks display, but I hate when neighbors do them just to do them, a week or so before the 4th of July. It hasn't been that bad this year, but we used to have a bunch of boys that lived near us that would go to Chinatown in NYC and bring bag everything imaginable. One year they had something that blew a big hole in the middle of the street. They are illegal in NJ, but the father of one of the boys is something big in the fire dept. in town, and he's often out there with them :confused3

Me too...and I am SO thankful I live in the country. Nobody near enough to me to bother my horses (who are outside at night). BUT my property is situated so that I have a perfect view of fireworks a few miles away over the tree tops (without the noise). It's hilarious as DH and I stand out in our pasture to watch them and the horses line up in the field to watch them with us. They're fascinated!

I enjoy them. Sorry you find them annoying

:thumbsup2

I like them on the actual day. I DON'T like when the neighbors set them off a week straight after July 4th because they are so stupid they bought way too many and now have to get rid of it.
I would like THEM to buy some anti-anxiety stuff for my dogs

I usually drug my dog with tranquilizers from the vet for 4th of July-it makes him sleep the night away and me happy cause he is not bugging me. I don't mind fireworks at all, I like the ones that make your whole house shake! But after a friend blowing off his arm 2 years ago with them I personally do not light any myself anymore.

Thank you. I thought I would look like a huge party pooper admitting I hate them.

I don't mind the professional displays, but I won't go out of my way to watch them.

Having small kids, I do mind when neighbors set them off at all hours of the night. I suppose everyone must have off this week (except me), because people were setting them off last night at midnight. I know my neighbor spends upwards of $400 on them every year, so I expect it'll be the same for the rest of the week.

I know it is wrong, but if these people accidentally blew off a few fingers, I wouldn't feel bad.

For the last 2 weeks people have been setting them off at night in my neighborhood, between 10 and 11 mostly. LOUD ones, it wakes everyone up(in my house anyway) and it's annoying, for 2 weeks after 4th of July they will be doing it too. Lame.

LOL, that is so cute and funny!

Well here we are with the big week before us. I hope everyone has a safe and Happy 4th, and our pets and babies get through it without too much upset. :)

I haven't liked fireworks since a large stand close to my grandmother's home exploded and the force threw her across the room and broke her back. It damaged her home, too. I was in elementary school and have hated them ever since!

Even though 4th of July was on a Wednesday this year people were out late setting off fireworks- at 1am people on the block behind me were lighting off mortars that shake the whole house. Everytime I fell asleep I would be blasted awake- oh well, glad its only the one day a year they light them off so late because getting up at 6am came to quick LOL.

I enjoy professional displays but dislike random fireworks in the neighborhood. I am asleep and then get awoken by a boom and then go back to sleep for a half hour before another one wakes me.

Agree.

I had to go to work today. I got about 3 hours of sleep last night. My neighbors were setting off illegal ones all night long.

My friends had to deal with some idiot setting them off in a field between neighborhoods last night... and starting a fire. Luckily it didn't spread beyond the field, but it is that sort of thing that makes me hate fireworks that are done by the general public. Too many people are too stupid to handle them correctly.

I think it is so incredibly rude and selfish to set them off really late! I did not mind when we got rain around 10pm, it put an end to all of it.
Sleep well tonight, Christine. :)

I think they're fun but don't like how much they upset pets/animals. I also wish there was some type of regulation in place saying you couldn't set them off after a certain time.

Last night, DH and I made a complaint to our condo association about some new tenants (we own, they rent). They were setting off fireworks right next to the building. They were the kind that sparkle and flame about 6-8 feet into the air. Someone that lives in the front building (the buildings are in a rectangle shape with a central courtyard) asked them to go farther out into the courtyard. They did, but they were still close to the 2 side buildings. And that's when they set off the kind of fireworks that go up into the air, above the rooftops, and LAND on the rooftops. They did that for about an hour. There was so much smoke out there, you couldn't see the building on the other side of the courtyard.

What was even more crazy...they gave sparklers to what looked like a 4- or 5-year old and a diaper-wearing baby in a playpen :sad2:

We probably should have called the police, but it's been getting bad in this complex and we're scared of retribution.

They're all legal here. Even the big sky rockets. They have mortar tubes and everything to shoot em off with. But we didn't set any off this year due to things being so dry. Our neighborhood is known for big displays. However, this year it was very quiet again due to things being so dry. I have come to loathe the professional displays. Way too crowded with a bunch of idiots for my taste and none of them are screened. I think the last straw was when a bunch of drunken idiots decided to throw a bunch of fireworks into a crowd of us sitting on the curb waiting. Fortunately for them, the cops arrested em before several in the crowd could beat em to a pulp. Plus they always play the same tired songs.

Here's what I don't get. I have a friend who lives in Orlando. They have some of the best fireworks shows in the country, EVERY NIGHT, in multiple theme parks.

I was talking to them last night. It sounded like the house was being shelled. It was unbelievable. The dog was in a total panic, running around trying to hide under things, and had been all day. My friend said it goes on like that for a week in their neighborhood.

Why in the world would you set off cheap, crummy fireworks in your neighborhood when you have your pick of professional fireworks shows every night of the year, within a 10-minute drive?
