I am so sorry this happened. We had to do something similar with our dog when DD#1 was little. (we were a little more fortunate, she was taken in by a neighbor couple-their idea)
All my childless friends were horrified that I would even consider the Humane Society (which I would have done if not for the neighbors)-but you have to protect your human children first and foremost. Do I still miss the dog? At times, though I can drive to her new home and see her. Was I relieved to not worry each and every moment that she and my daughter were in proximity? Absolutely.
Now if we could just get the cat to stop peeing on our newest baby's stuff...If it's not one pet, it's another! (this one I can handle, though)
