Obama advises Republicans not to listen to Rush Limbaugh and apparently accept the bloated, pork infested stimulus package. I would hope that Republicans would have some conservative thoughts of their own and I find it interesting that Obama is again concerning himself with a private citizen. During the campaign, he made frequent disparaging references to Sean Hannity.

WASHINGTON -- President Obama warned Republicans on Capitol Hill today that they need to quit listening to radio king Rush Limbaugh if they want to get along with Democrats and the new administration.

"You can't just listen to Rush Limbaugh and get things done," he told top GOP leaders, whom he had invited to the White House to discuss his nearly $1 trillion stimulus package.

One White House official confirmed the comment but said he was simply trying to make a larger point about bipartisan efforts.

"There are big things that unify Republicans and Democrats," the official said. "We shouldn't let partisan politics derail what are very important things that need to get done."

That wasn't Obama's only jab at Republicans today.

In an exchange with Rep. Eric Cantor (R-Va.) about the proposal, the president shot back: "I won," according to aides briefed on the meeting.

"I will trump you on that."

Not that Obama was gloating. He was just explaining that he aims to get his way on stimulus package and all other legislation, sources said, noting his unrivaled one-party control of both congressional chambers.

"We are experiencing an unprecedented economic crisis that has to be dealt with and dealt with rapidly," Obama said during the meeting.

Republicans say the $825 billion price tag is too big a burden for a nation crippled by debt and that it doesn't do enough to stimulate the economy by cutting taxes.

"You know, I'm concerned about the size of the package. And I'm concerned about some of the spending that's in there, [about] ... how you can spend hundreds of millions on contraceptives," House GOP Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) later said.

"How does that stimulate the economy?"

But White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs countered: "There was a lot of agreement in that room about the notion that we're facing an economic crisis unlike we've seen in quite some time ... that we must act quickly to stimulate the economy, create jobs, put money back in people's pockets."

Gibbs disagreed with those who called the meeting window dressing.

"The president is certainly going to listen to any ideas," he said.

"He will also go to Capitol Hill the beginning of next week to talk to Republican caucuses and solicit their input and their ideas."

So, Dawn, do you think following the thoughts of Rush will help get things accomplished? I think Obama's correct, Limbaugh is an especially hate filled, name calling, bully. We tell our children to avoid them on the playground and we avoid them as adults who want to have productive lives. Does anyone who's making good choices intentionally take one of these bullies as one of their best friends and follow their lead in hopes of having a successful, productive life? Raise your hand if that's how you've made good things happen in your life!!! not me

I think that following conservative principles will get things accomplished, no matter who articulates them. We can't spend our way to prosperity and much of this spending won't even take place until 2011. If we had a program of cutting taxes, slashing corporate taxes, letting workers keep their own money, we would see improvement in the economy. Government is not the solution, they are the problem.

Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity are relevant as long as there are rabid conservatives who enjoy the toxic garbage that they send out over the airwaves each day.

Is there some truth to the things that they say. Absolutely. However, they thrive on splitting this country right down the middle. And they have. The more upset and anger that they cause, the happier that they are (and the higher their ratings go....and the richer they get).

Yes, I find it odd that Obama is actually concerned that people may be listening to Rush or Hannity. (I've never listened to Rush - but I like Hannity.) Honestly, you would think that Obama wouldn't be paying attention to the man - that he'd be too busy to listen to Conservative radio talk show hosts. Since he is, he must be really worried that Rush is making logical sense that will keep the Republicans from giving him his way. Honestly, I never thought about people in our Government listening to radio talk show hosts since they're the ones with the actual information for things before them. I, mean, I guess that they could. I considered it to be more the average citizen that listens to them to keep up with what is going on out there.

And
the President shot back "I won,"
 How arrogant and childish was that?? And he's worried that the Republican's won't get along with the Dem's because of talk radio when he takes arrogant shots such as that?

Wow.

And I agree with you Dawn; Government is not the solution (besides, how many screwed-up Government run programs do we already have since they usually tend to mess everything up? :confused3 ) but sadly, many here in this county do think that they want the Government to run everything.

I agree with Dawn and Dolce! Obviously those who hate Rush Limbaugh and what he has to say DO NOT listen to Rush because they are interested in what he has to say, and ARE NOT conservatives! They get their info from radical left-wingers' edited sound-bites. Obama can kiss my behind if he thinks he can tell me who I should listen to and what I should read. Honestly, the arrogance of that man grows larger by the day, along with his head!

I have yet to figure how we're supposed to get out of a hole by digging it deeper.

I'm reminded of when I was a kid we were often told that if we dug a hole deep enough we would end up in China. Perhaps that was more of a philisophical prediction than we thought.

I read the same article and wondered how many people will listen to Rush's show on Monday. I am looking forward to his response. I love Rush!

I don't find either Limbaugh or Hannity to be rabid and spew out toxic garbage; nor do I believe that they thrive on splitting this country right down the middle. I place those attributes on some of the CNN pundits (that I'm sometimes forced to listen to) or someone like Keith Olbermann. But I bet you don't.

The thing is; you either like or hate them based upon your personal political beliefs. Hannity is no more vile than a Conservative would find someone, that you listen to, to be. It's your own personal opinion that you gave of both Hannity and Limbaugh that many in this country would disagree with you on. That's alright, that's your opinion. Just accept that others will not agree with you. Hannity and Limbaugh have just as much right to speak as someone like Olbermann does.

If that is true the conservatives ought to hope and insist that Limbaugh is not relevant. The cult of personality harms any movement it's a part of. When a pastor becomes more important than his message, for example, the whole point is subverted.

::yes::

Here comes the FAIRNESS DOCTRINE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Only it won't be one big bill called the "Fairness Doctrine." It will be done in small, undedected parts tacked on to important spending bills to help the economy. It will more than likely begin by restricing stations at the local level in some form.

I think when Obama said you can't listen to Rush and get things done, he was referring directly to this Hannity-Rush interview that took place January 21,2008:

In that interview Rush pushed his conservative view and explained why they should not want Obama to succeed. Rush implied that Obama's agenda is the polar opposite of the conservative agenda.

Edited to add:

Maybe Obama just wants both parties to work together for the good of all.
I know that is what I want.

I couldn't agree more. But Rush Limbaugh was not who I had in mind when I read it.

This is so true. Just listen to Olberman or Chris Matthews for that matter. Personally I am not a fan of Rush Limbaugh but he is no worse than those two. Liberals just can't stand to let a conservative voice be heard.

I wouldnt be suprised if Rush's ratings now go UP!

It is odd for a President to point out individual citizens (Rush, Hannity, Joe the plumber) as "bad apples". I dont recall that ever happening before.:confused3

My guess is that Obama may is keeping a "enemy list" like Nixon did.
