We went to a half-priced book store and I looked in the clearance children's section and found a book called Danger in the Magic Kingdom: A Crisp Twins Adventure by Julia Dobson.

I am going to save it for my son to read on the airplane. It is copyrighted 1983 in Great Britain.

These twins are in an English boarding school, and are going to join their father for Christmas in the US. They fly into New York and go to see the Statue of Liberty, meeting a Russian dancing troupe in the process. Their father has already interviewed the dancers (he's a journalist), and found that two of them, a couple, would like to leave Russia, as their families have already moved to Israel, but they have been denied.

The twins, a girl named Abi and a boy named Sam, fly to Disney World the next day. Lo and behold, Disney World is also in the itinerary of the Russian group. The twins and the dancers stay at The Contemporary. The dancing couple try to get away and end up in the twins' hotel room, but are intercepted by their escorts.

The next day, the twins go to the Magic Kingdom, and see the dancers there. At this point, the story is just full of little juicy tidbits about a 1980s Magic Kingdom. There are references to Mr. Toad's Wild Ride and 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, which I can just barely remember, but also some I don't know, like Monsanto's Magic Carpet.

They talk to a chatty CM, and discuss crowds, the fact that there are 32 attractions, that Haunted Mansion, Small World, Space Mountain and POTC are the most popular, and by the time they've arrived (mid-morning) the waits will be 45 minutes or more for those. The CM recommends they see the "freebies" which are exhibits put on by companies. A great description of Carousel of Progress and this Monsant's Magic Carpet follows.

The dancers break away from their group again at It's a Small World, but are caught at the exit.

Then they break away again at The Haunted Mansion, and they all jump OFF the ride and through the attraction!

Then they get on the Richard F. Irvine paddle steamer, all the while being pursued, and step off the steamer onto an island with an Indian camp being depicted. They regroup there, borrow a canoe, and paddle back to Frontierland.

They give lots of descriptions of Main Street and Tom Sawyer's Island in the book, too.

They end up in Pooh, Mickey and Minnie costumes and in the parade, then leave the MK and hop on the monorail.

The monorail is stopped, though, and the adventure continues!

It's a fast-paced read, and I think my son will really enjoy it. I paid 50 cents for it! Just thought I'd let you all know it's out there, so you can look for it too!

It looks about 3rd/4th to me. My son is in 5th so he should find it easy reading.........just perfect for the plane!

I have a few 2nd graders who could read it........if they understand phonics rules and can understand the vocabulary (surgeon, monorail, proceed, defect).
