I doubt this will ever happen but should the TSA give out clear plastic bags?

Like your aunt's boyfriend.

So, on one hand, you say that you understand that it was all his (your aunt's boyfriend's fault), but on the other hand, you think that the TSA should fix his problem for him (by having the baggies).

The rule is 3.4oz or less AND in a 1 quart/litre bag. Skip either one and it is not allowed in carry on.

I'm also confused that you "doubt it will ever happen" but regularly fly out of an airport where it does happen (admittedly, by CATSA not TSA).
I actually should have mentioned only seeing the table that had various items which were not allowed and a garbage of items already thrown out, however I never saw the bags so my mistake. Also when others mentioned some Airports in the United States do this I did not know that, which is I used the words I doubt this will happen in the title of the thread.

I don't think it was the TSA but rather airport employees who gave out zip lock bags. The OP could carry extra bags so he could be a Good Samaritan if a passenger on line forget their bag.

Reno Nevada has the zip lock bags - they are on a table just before you enter the line - no one is inconvenienced this way

Which, in my opinion, is a rather annoying place to have them. ... It makes much more sense to have these bags (if provided) before people enter the line.

Yes, but there's really not any place for that at the SD airport. It's a horrid little airport, IMO. Only bad part about having my brother live down there!

It might very well be. But at least at the SD airport it's a person well inside the TSA "line", wearing what appear to be TSA clothes...might not actually be a TSA employee, or funded by the TSA, but it sure has looked like it, the times I've seen it.

Well hopefully the TSA gets all their cool new toys, and they can follow thru with what they were projecting could happen in Fall 09 (well it appears they've missed that). Getting rid of the liquid and gel restrictions in carry ons so you will be allowed to take pretty much all the liquids you want thru security again..

If the TSA were to start handing them out, then someone would complain if they didn't get one. I say keep the TSA out of the business of handing out clear bags.

/
I only thought they should in cases when the passenger has the correct size which is allowed in carryon bags.
You're missing our point. Honest mistake or not, lack of knowledge or not, compliant size or not - it's NOT the responsibility of the airport or the TSA to provide the necessary plastic bags.

Keep the airport out of the plastic baggie 'business' as well.

For that matter, surely there must have been a store in the Hawaii airport selling individual one-quart clear zipper-top bags.

Even if bags were routinely provided the system won't be perfect. tHERE WILL STILL BE A FEW TIMES WHEN ALL THE BAGS ARE SOLD OUT.

They are now pretty much a staple in most airport stores. But I'm sure you know that. :)

I recall seeing plastic bags available in Tampa or FLL when the rule was 1st enforced. I also remember at that time seeing LOTS of items in trash cans that weren't allowed. At the time, it was all over the news but still people were bringing full size liquid bottles.

Lately I haven't seen any bags offered.

I have to admit though once I had my things thrown away and it was my fault completely. On cruises, guests have to put their luggage outside their door by 11 pm the night before the cruise ends. You have to be sure to keep clothes for the next day, toiletries and a carry on bag to put your dirty PJs in. I kept 3 bottles of fluoride mouthwash for kids and I, with the intention of putting them in our luggage to be checked, once off the ship.
I completely forgot this last step and accidentally left the bottles in dh's backpack. (Those of you who travel with children know; sometimes they make you completely lose your mind.):upsidedow
Boy, did I cringe when they tossed $15 of fluoride rinse in the trash. It was my own fault and lesson learned. :guilty:
Now I get cheap toothbrushes from the dollar store and travel size toothpaste and mouthwash and toss it all at the end of our vacation.

See, this isn't as simple as going to your local Pharmaprix and buying a box of litre bags on sale and collecting Optimum points.

There are costs involved - purchasing, distribution, labour, etc. They may raise the cost of a $0,40 litre bag to $2,00 for example.

Who pays for that? WE do! Do you think that most people want to pay another $2 to subsidize the lack of responsibility of other passengers, and in this case one who isn't even a resident of America?

I doubt it.

I have never ever seen a litre or quart bag for sale in an airport shop. They would need to be landside to be effective.

Then again, I am responsible enough to not need to purchase one.

And why did he throw it out after his outbound flight? My bags last over 50,000 miles each.

Add wastage to lack of responsibility. That bag could have been reused several times.

Mother Nature isn't very happy.

I don't agree with any scheme which absolves adults of personal responsibility and increases the costs for everyone.

There are plenty of examples of this in everyday travel that would easily be considered 'providing a service/amenities'. Most hotels offer travel sizes of shampoo, conditioner and lotion. Obviously enough people have asked for these items in the past so now hotels offer them to everyone routinely.
(Many also include mini sewing kits, shower caps, etc.)
Most people here have come to expect to find these items in their hotel room.

Should the hotel staff instead scold their guests that they are adults and should have brought these things themselves?
Should we all write letters to hotels asking them to stop providing these free items since it raises overall costs for everyone?

Considering all the taxes/fees added onto the cost of a plane ticket, the price of a baggie for probably 1 every 10th passenger, is so small esp when buying a generic brand in bulk. Just look at the difference in price for 2 flights, same fare, when one is non stop and the other connects. The connecting flight is more than $10 higher just to use their facilities. Last time we connected, I don't recall feeling like my family of 4 got our $40 worth at the connecting airport. ;)

I personally would rather use my own and be packed and ready when I leave for the airport than worry about getting one there and repacking before getting in line.

What does this have to do with anything? :rolleyes1 Anytime one travels in another country, taxes are paid according to that countries tax system. I didn't blame the Canadian people when we paid high taxes for everything in Niagara Falls.

Your rants against inexperienced American travelers are really getting old.
Not everyone here is like you with no family and spending all their time flying all over the world and never forgetting something you needed or making a mistake.
Perhaps you should take a break from the Disboards.

Or, perhaps, since you are the one who doesn't like Bavaria's posts, you should stop reading her posts (there is a handy ignore feature).

I find it amazing that you decided to pick on Bavaria as if she were the only one stating that they didn't think that the TSA should be providing bags for passengers. Did you not read all the other posts saying the same thing?

I am not tired of Bavaria's posts and I have gotten a lot of information from her, she has every right to post here whatever her opinion is unless it is against the guidelines why do you feel you have the right to tell her to take a break, because you don't like what she posts some of us do, you don't have to read her posts.

RANT?!?!? Oh my goodness, you havent seen a good rant. There are no butterflies and flowers passed around on this part of the forum, but I wouldnt consider anything Bavaria has posted as a rant. Maybe not what people want to hear, but not a rant. Lots of sites / forums are all people blowing around pixie dust and all huggy and kissy, and that's all fine and dandy, but as the head moderator of this forum states, there is no pixie dust allowed on the transportation forums. If you dont find a certain posters information / replies something you like, click the ignore button, but you'll probably have to ignore a LOT as you will see that a lot of those that travel a lot will offer the same advice..
