I honestly don't believe some parents out there. Everybody knows the world isn't perfect or a fairy tale, but why must they burden their children with "reality" at such a young age? Why do parents want their children to grow up so fast that they never really get to be happy or basically, they're never really allowed to be a kid?

Just thought I'd add that both my DD (18) and DMom (77) are princesses. They have a mutual admiration thing going on.
When they aren't princessing, Mom is into politics and DD is completing her college degree in communication.
We are amused! (insert Royal Wave here)

My wife is a strong feminist... and she does have some concerns about the Princesses in a culture where we have women starving themselves to meet some impossible ideal. But more than looks, her main concern has been passivity... the idea that "the Prince" will come and save her without any action on her part. Thus, her favorite princesses are Belle, Pocahontas, Mulan, and Cinderella in Cindy III.

Having said that, we let our daughter watch all the Disney Princess films. We depend on our own teaching to raise a non-passive daughter. For that reason, when our daughter plays Sleeping Beauty, she always seems to have a sword strapped over her dress. LOL.

I love this...my DD is very imaginative and creates her own type of characters too!!!

It seems that liberal and feminist are beign used here pejorativley. I am both a feminist and a liberal and I agree that you can let children be children and educate them about the real expectations of this society. How do you do both? You listen and teach without judgement, you encourage and guide with out bending, and you take time to communicate with your children.

Disclaimer made, I have no problem with the Disney Princess thing. I think it's an absolute genius marketing ploy by Disney. As long as girls know that happily ever after doesn't mean waiting for a prince to come and rescue them.


Personally I'm a Tinkerbell girl and always have been. Maybe it's the sassy and *****y attitude. Though if the newly single Prince Williiam came knocking on my door tomorrow, I might just change my mind.

I absolutley agree....with my DD when we play Beauty and the Beast we talk about what a good reader Belle was and how she liked helping Beast learn to read. We focus on the aspects that are important to us and not to society, like being brave not pretty, being independent not dependent. And all while wearing a shiny dress with glass slippers!!
