:worried:

We are booked (deposit only) to go in December this year, we are going to have to change that to early next year now as we just went on a short holiday which has eaten the extra cash for flights !

Now my problem is my wife is getting cold feet !!! She loves dlrp but is very scared about flying and she says she just feels exhausted even thinking about going to WDW.

We were due to spend 10 days at Disney and a week on idrive but I don't know what to do for the best now , any thoughts ? How can I assure her it will be fine?

I love dlrp but not sure if I want to go back instead of going to wdw, looking at prices and its getting a joke in Paris !

It's always disappointing to have to move a holiday further along but the good news is that the parks will be a lot less busy early next year, if you haven't been at Christmas before, it is absolutely manic! Crowds, queues, crowds, queues.....but huge ones!

I'm not a lover of flying myself to be honest and we go long haul every year, I dread it in the lead up but try and focus on what's on the other side :) I also try to convince myself of how safe flying is and I have the flying without fear app on my iPhone!

I hope you manage to get something sorted! :goodvibes

It sounds like you wife is worried that the holiday will be 'go, go, go' :hyper:

You have a nice long trip planned so that would give you the opportunity to factor in lots of down time as well

What does she enjoy?

Spa, dinning, shopping, pool time, sports/recreation?

Perhaps if you show her some of the things that she would really enjoy she might get more excited about the trip :goodvibes

There are just so many great options available :)

Maybe because you have just come back from one holiday you need to recover from that one first before you make any decisions about the next one.
I agree with Lisa X, early next year might not be such a bad thing, you get the same weather just minus the crowds and decorations.

I totally understand about the flying. My mum is as nervous as they come, once she got so scared on a flight she squeezed my dads wedding ring into his finger, cutting off the circulation, the cabin crew had to cut it off. She still flies regardless, with the attitude of " Its the only way i'll ever get to go to these places", but she goes through hell to get there.

Thanks for all your input :)

Feb could be the way to go, how is may in Florida ? Trying to get a half term week on the holiday for the schooling side of things. So thinking Feb or May half term, what are prices like in May? Any other ideas for half term dates where its not to busy and not to expensive or to hot ?!!!

We have done both Feb and May half term.
February is a lot quieter, apart from Presidents weekend which is Feb 15th-18th next year. That weekend will be busy, and a few days either side will be too. For that weekend we stayed away from MK and had a day at the Water Park and a day at AK which was great. Februarys weather can be hit or miss, we've been there during a mini heatwave(which is like our hot summer) and another time it was cold(i mean winter coat cold), but it hardly ever rains. As long as you pack at least one warm jumper and long trousers you'll be fine.

May half term is busier, but not as busy as easter or christmas. Our British half term falls just as some of the schools break up in the south and west of America, but most break up in June' so crowds shouldn't be too bad. The weather is hot so you'll need to plan days carefully. I don't know the ages of your children but we always did parks in the morning, pool in the afternoon, and then if we felt like it went back to a park in the evening, that worked well for us. You will get more rain in May, mostly late afternoon.

As for prices, because you will be going during half term, flight prices might not be much different, but i can't remember what we paid for feb last time.

My personal choose would be May, but we love the sun and doing water parks, and also its a guaranteed two weeks of summer:beach:

Whenever you choose to go remember, its Disney, its always magical:goodvibes

What is it about DLRP that your wife loves?

To me WDW is so much better, not just because of more parks, but the weather, the shopping, the great service, I could go on.

Thanks everyone :)

My wife just loves Disney full stop but very scared to fly, she's only flown once and someone died on the plane !

May might be to hot for us, our kids will be 3,9,15..

Feb would be leaving on the 12th so we would hit Presidents day, how hot is May?

Virgin's Flying without Fear course, hypnosis and diazepam (but very little!) got me onto the plane. Motivation was to visit with our daughter at a particular age. My husband loves flying. I knew I'd get on the plane to get there, but I didn't want it to ruin the anticipation, nor to ruin the holiday knowing I'd have to fly back at the end - hence all the extra help!

It definitely worked. Can't say I love flying, but I am no longer actively avoiding it at all costs and have even flown since, albeit just a short flight to Dublin, but I managed that without any diazepam! I work quite near Heathrow and I used to feel nauseous watching the planes take off. Now I wonder if they are off to Orlando :)

We've done a lot of visits to DLRP (by car!!), but it's not a patch on WDW.

Hi there,
I can totally understand your wife's fear. I too am terrified of flying. We have driven several times to DLRP (all the way from Scotland) and this October have our first family trip to WDW. I am so excited but at the same time do worry about the flight. However I really don't want it to be something that stops me (and my family) enjoying life. I do also get dimazipan which takes the edge of slightly. I am trying to think that I am going to get on the plane anyway so whats the point worrying all the time about it, and also to focus on the amazing time that we are all going to have, and memories which will last a lifetime. Also my children have no idea I am scared as I have always manged to hide it for their sakes so they feel safe. This actually helps as it stops me from wallowing in the fear (which I admit I do!)and making myself worse!

The flying without fear course is definitely a good one! Also, I find a couple of drinks before the flight helps a lot (even early in the morning.......I'm on holiday right? Haha)

One thing, as daft as it might sound to some, that helps me too is following some of the virgin flights to Orlando online! I see what time they take off, I see that they have landed, taken off again, landed again etc etc and it just fills me with confidence that all is ok and I will be just fine like the many many flights each day that take off and land with no problem!

I am not a good flyer. For me it's more to do with the people on the plane, I hate crowds and do everything in my power to avoid them. Can't doe that on a plane. I get diazepam from my GP but I also have done CBT, cognitive behavioural therapy and also do self hypnosis before I get on the plane and during the flight to help me relax and stay relaxed. It is hard when you have a fear or a phobia it can make flying harder but with the right help your fear can be controlled instead of controlling you. If your wife speaks with her GP then a solution that suits her can be found.

I've tried hypnosis, CBT, diazepam, beta blockers and alcohol with no joy. I'm trying the Virgin fear of flying course next week thoug, so fingers crossed!!

How did you find the flight after you did the course? Did the course help?

It definitely helped, not least because it forced me onto a flight for the first time in years and I was able to do that away from friends/family. I found it enormously informative and reassuring - just understanding what the plane is doing at different times has stopped me thinking that every creak and bump is the wings falling off!

I have to admit I had a bit of a blub on the flight during the course, but I think part of that was having the opportunity to be able to express the emotion I felt because I didn't have to be brave in front of my daughter. On the flight to Orlando I felt very calm and in control - this might not sound like a big deal to most people, but being able to get up and go to the toilet without feeling hugely anxious was a very proud moment for me! :goodvibes

Hope it goes well for you. Do let me know how you get on.

Jeanette

Thanks everyone,

Looks like my wife has 'accepted' I wont take no for an answer !

We are going to change the dates to either 12th Feb or 20th May for 16 nights, both we allow only a week or so off school as there will be half term within the 16 nights.

Not found anyone cheaper the Disney (inc flights) for Feb yet, even Complete Orlando weren't cheaper ! Think we may do May though as 2 of our kids will be 4 and 10 instead of still 3 and 9 - that 'feels' like they will remember more and do more even though its really only 3 months different !

Slightly worried about the heat in May and love bugs !

I used to be terrified of flying and, although it'll never be a pleasure for me, compared with the way I once felt, it's a doddle these days. Diazepam was a huge help for several trips, although I haven't had to resort to that in years. A British Airways' Fear of Flying course was also a significant factor for the reasons others have already pointed out. Because I'm lazy, I'm going to search for some historic posts where I've spelt out my thoughts in detail. I know this isn't going to help your wife, or any of the other posters who are nervous about their next flight, but by far the biggest factor in overcoming my fear has been familiarity - the more I fly, the easier it gets. I spent my first flight to the US in tears, gripping the armrests the whole way. And I mean the whole way! I'm not saying I never have the occasional wobble, but I actually enjoy the airport experience and can casually look out of the window while the plane is banking. In the past, most of my time at the airport was spent in the toilet being very ill, and slowing, banking and turbulence completely panicked me.

Off to look for those earlier posts in the hope that they might help. :)

OK, here's one of many posts I've made over the years. If you search for Fear of Flying you'll pull up loads of helpful threads. :thumbsup2
