I don't get it

Thanks for the responses. I seen a lot of people on my recent cruise with DVC members on their door. I am not a resort type of person. We will almost always stay at a value resort unless their is a special on a moderate resort. I did attend a wedding at the grand floridian and heard their room was $7000 but I rather spend my money elsewhere.

If you go on another cruise, sit in on one of the DVC presentations if you want to learn more. But it doesn't make a lot of sense for someone who is happy staying in a value resort at Disney.

The key is to buy resale, and buy one of the cheaper resorts (but if your heart is set on one resort, then buy there). Be prepared to get stuck where you buy during busy times, but usually you should be able to have a choice of more than one resort.

;) Yep we used to do Values and actually loved them. We were even able to stay at POFQ once, thanks to my generous MIL. On our 3-4 th trip (we just finished #10), DH and I decided WDW was our place, sorta like a favorite cabin in the woods or beach house. I was really interested in DVC, DH was happy with Pop....but he loves me and supported my decision to buy in....and probably to get me to shush about it....but whatever it took, we now own at AKV. We have made 2 trips using our points, staying in studios and providing a second studio for my MIL.

SO what makes it different from staying in Values? Well after so many trips to WDW I don't have to be there at rope drop, we know where we want to eat, and we really do not need any more souvenirs. We are in our 40s and childless. So it is our yearly escape and our "special place". We love Pop and actually stayed there for one night on our recent trip. The AKV buses seem to be faster, the walk to the gate is easier and closer, the resort is more quiet (this is Kidani, not necessarily Jambo). The pool area is top notch and there are animals out our balcony most of the time. We do not mind returning to the room for a rest or cold drink (no more lugging ice from the vending area). It is kinda like buying a car, in your teens a Pinto is cool cause you are just happy to have wheels. Your twenties you get a Mustang with money from your first real job. The kids come or you get married and decide to purchase the mini van. Then one day the kids are older, going off to college and you decide to buy a Corvette. Why? Owning DVC completely changes your Disney trip just like a Corvette completely changes your drive to work....

ToddyLu - that is an excellent analogy!

Love it!! I actually had a Pinto and if it started when it needed to I was happy. I do have to say that to me the best part of owning is being able to treat family and friends to a great room. With all our kids and grandkids we love being able to have them just come up with the cash for the tickets, food and getting there without having to worry about the room portion. We are working very hard to indoctrinating..er..sharing Disney magic with.. all our grandkids hoping they'll enjoy Disney for life. And on a selfish front, if we didn't own and went with the kids and they could only afford the good old Tropicana across the street (as we did when they were young) then we'd feel obligated to stay there too :) I love the Grand, have since 2001, and am so glad to walk in the doors. Really, our trips to DLR are the cheapest vacations we can have. We have APs, we take the train and we eat cheap and don't buy stuff. We have our ownership split into 4 small contracts so we can sell some if we find we don't need as many points and still have enough for less frequent trips.

I agree with the others above. We never bought into DVC with thoughts of "saving money". In fact, we spend more than ever! LOL! But, we used to stay at moderates at best, we wanted a nicer accommodation. "Home Away From Home" is what they used to pitch.

That is exactly how we approached it too, Carol Ann. We were going at least once a year staying at moderates and wanted to go more often and possibly even stay in better accomodations. The only way we could see doing this and sustain it financially over the long haul was with DVC. So far, it has worked extremely well for us, even in these financially challenging times.

It has served us very well through the years also! The extra sleep space, bathrooms, kitchen, laundry, etc. have made our many WDW trips so much more enjoyable! And though we could have continued nicely with the moderates, the trips we have taken since joining DVC have been absolutely fabulous. :)

If you are thinking seriously about DVC you should pay cash for it. The extra interest will be a lot in the long run. This is a luxury not as necessary item that you are purchasing.

This is not always the case, but maybe our timing was just extremely good. We bought BLT in 2009 for $92 a point. We paid it off in one year. The price one year after we bought was about $112 per point. This was a 22% increase in price. If we had waited until we had the cash, we would have spent quite a bit more than the tax deductible 10.75% and would have missed out on two vacations.

I agree, that way you can save the money for your fees and such
