Hello there!

I feel like sharing; I hope no one minds! :goodvibes

Since April (the 19th to be exact) I have been working hard to get healthy. Watching what I eat, journaling every bite, exercising regularly, and setting fitness goals to keep me motivated. My long-term goal is to do the Princess Half Marathon in 2012 (must save for this, thus the far off date). In the meantime I am trying to do one event a month for the foreseeable future. Last month I completed my first 5k and today I completed my 2nd. I felt more prepared for this one happily. I had a whole extra month of training under my plus-sized belt, waaayyy better shoes (what a difference!) and some clue on how these events work.

One thing I had to keep running through my brain on this one was "DLF>DNF>>DNS". Cuz I was dead last on this one. That being said I shaved over 4 minutes off my previous time! I am beyond thrilled with my results. Sure I was last, just behind a bearded older gentleman likely in his 70's; but I did it and improved my time. That's all I can ask for!

It makes such a huge difference to me having these events to look forward to and train for to help me stay motivated. And it really helps to read the experiences of those of you who have been doing this for a long time. So thank you for sharing and thank you for dispensing advice to us newbies! :worship:

Now I must go find a race for August.... :surfweb:

(For those who may be intersted, I'm down 25+ pounds or 10% of my original starting weight since April 19th. :dance3:)

Awesome!!! :cheer2: :cheer2:

25 lbs is a great loss! I love the DLF > DNF > DNS attitude, too.

I find that it is so much easier to stick to a healthy living plan when I have physical goals like races. I just picked up running this year as well.

Keep up the great work! :goodvibes

Daisybelle,

Congraulations:cool1: way to go on shaving off 4 minutes. I definetly agree that, it is wonderful way to keep motivated by continuing races!! Wonderful on the weight loss and hope to see you in 2012 at the princess 1/2 marathon!!!

Thanks so much! I'm having so much fun with my new hobbie!

That gave me goosebumps! :goodvibes

Congratulations!

I'm thrilled for you and the accomplishments you've made. There is no better feeling than a healthy lifestyle.

Congratulations!! I think I remember you from last month when you shared about your first race.

I ran my first 5k last month too, and it was such an amazing feeling. I was 12th from last, but my speed was faster than I had ever done, and I felt so proud. That is awesome you increased your speed by 4 minutes!! You will so be ready for the princess 2012!! Congratulations!!:cheer2:

Great job on the race and the weight loss. It sounds like you have a really good plan for getting healthy. I think a lot of people find the second race to be a completely different experience then their first. You know what to expect and have something to compare it to. 4 minutes is a lot of time to shave off of your time, congratulations.

Your are right about having events to train for. Whether they are local 5Ks or destination races like Disney or other events having that tangible event coming up helps make those training runs/jogs/walks a little easier to get through. At the end of every month I love deciding what I'll be doing the next month or deciding on the next long weekend getaway for a run. I can tell you that never gets old no matter how long you do it.

Good luck on whatever you find for August and at completing the Princess half.

Congratulations on your 2nd 5k! That's so hard! I really need to train so I can do that one day! :D

Thank you! And I agree about the healthy lifestyle. I feel like a whole new world has been opened up! I'm ready to be a more out-of-doors mom! Kayaking? bring it on! I've always wanted to try that. :thumbsup2

I think the reason I was able to shave so much time off was I'm better at stretching and warming up beforehand then I was a month ago. I was able to start out much faster rather this time rather than going slower the first few minutes to get all my parts moving smoothly!

Are you planning on any more 5ks this year?

Thank you so much! You were such a big help to me when I was getting started! :flower3: I'm having such a good time doing all of this.

I found a local race for August. It's a weird time though. 5pm in August on a Wednesday! That's the hottest part of the day where I live in Oregon. It should be interesting!

Congratulations on your 2nd 5k! That's so hard! I really need to train so I can do that one day! :D

The hard part was actually getting started with being active again. The first few weeks were unfun and miserable; but it gets better! I just had to patient and let my body get used to the new routine. I highly recommend it though! :thumbsup2

Congratulations! You're at the beginning of an amazing journey, but you have a terrific group here to share it with you.

If you choose to do the August race, plan to take it easy and don't push yourself. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate - before the race. I agree that it's a really strange time!

Keep up posted on your progress.

Jackie
