I am READY to tackle Everest!! (Though I may need a little convincing…)

I don't like the feeling I get from big drops like the last hill on Splash Mountain. I had never ridden EE until last summer. I slowly built up to it, starting with Big Thunder. When I made it through Big Thunder, I went on Space Mountain and then finally decided to give EE a try. My wife and I ended up in the first row and surpisingly, the backward part really did not affect me at all. When we went down the "big hill", like other posters have said you don't really go that fast due to the curvature of the track. All in all, I did not think it was bad at all and I was happy to have conquered one of the few rides that I had never been on before.:cool1: I really think that if you enjoy Splash and Space Mountains, you will be fine on EE.

I used to ride it once or twice each trip. After our last trip, I'll never ride it again. Thank goodness I wasn't on it, but my son was. The ride broke down and he was stuck on it. I won't tell you how they had to get rescued (nor will I show you the pics my son took while stuck on the ride), but let's just say there were alot of people coming off the ride crying because of it.

Now I know I really scared the OP! Sorry, but this is one of the worst rides to go on if it breaks down and you have to climb out of it. Especially when you are high up.

Great ride. Given you disliked RNRC to be honest I would be a bit hesitant. The backwards portion doesn't both me but I have seen it put people out of commission. RNRC is very smooth I would argue even smoother than Everest.

I am somewhat of a rollercoaster lover, though after I hit the age of 30, there are some I just can't handle anymore :) I personally do not like RnRC, it hurts my head, all that jostling around in the harness. But, I love Everest! It's probably my favorite thrill ride at WDW.

RnR is less intense for me. Although it goes upside down, which I think a lot of people don't like. The backward section is intense - but fun for me! But it is fairly staid until you go backwards, so the really fast part of the ride probably lasts a minute total - but guessing here - about 20 seconds going backward, and maybe 40 going forward - with a pause in between. The downhill outside is no big deal since you have been moving it is just part of the movement, and it doesn't bother me as much as those big sudden drops. I am of the notion that you should try it, and that way you will know for sure :goodvibes

OP, thanks for starting this thread. I'm also trying to talk myself into EE next time, but that stupid backwards part just has me too worried. I love Splash (drop and all), no motion sickness issues (love to spin the Tea Cups as fast as I can!), but I'm just convinced that backwards part of EE is gonna give me a heart attack or something. (And I have to say, the PP's story about the ride getting stuck isn't making me any less nervous.)

I LOVE EE, I think its my favorite ride (its a tough race between EE and Space Mountain) but if you conquered Space Mountain, EE will be a piece of cake.

Try it, you'll probably like it. I rode it for the first time in September (it was being built during our previous visit). It's now my favorite WDW ride. I rode it 7 times during 2 AK visits. The backwards part is my favorite and it does feel like you're going upside down but according to a CM at the ride exit, you are just going around a curve quickly. My husband gets motion sick so one time a day is enough for him.

I'm going to WDW for the first time in Jan/Feb and EE scares me to death. I probably shouldn't have watched a lot of youtube clips of rides because I've talked myself out of riding EE and a few other rides. I'm a huge fan of Disneyland (I got 3/4 times a year) and ride everything at DLR and DCA, but there's a lot of rides that I'm scared about riding at WDW. Hopefully I'll be brave and ride EE, but right now, no way! lol

Here's what to expect:

If you've seen the youtube videos you know what happens, but not how it "feels". Here's how it "feels" from a fellow ride-chicken.

The roller coaster is very smooth, not jerky at all, so that's a good thing. The ride starts off on the ground level and it's faster than I thought but it's fine. I think you go up one small lift hill at the beginning.

Then you start the long trek up the mountain. This is where the anxiety really gets you. Your heart starts racing, you feel like you gotta pee, etc. But if you take a look around it's really quite enjoyable. The lake down below looks awesome, I believe you can see hollywood studios and Epcot, you can see some buildings off to the left and I think one is ToT but I could be wrong. Then you get to the top and the ride kinda curves left to where the track "ends".

The next part is the worst part of the entire ride. Going backwards. You think you're prepared for it, you know it's coming, but it's horrible. All of a sudden you start going backward and it starts to pick up speed, then it makes this huge turn and then you go "up". It's a very disorienting feeling as it's the opposite of how most coasters feel. Going uphill backwards is a very weird feeling.

Then comes my favorite part which is the yeti projection. The rest of the ride is fine. The steep hill is nothing. It's over very fast and there is a large turn up which counteracts your dropping feeling so it ends up being a nothing feeling. Splash Mountain's drop is much worse than EE's drop. There are some twists and turns and the ride does go fast, but it's smooth and the g forces aren't much worse than Thunder Mountain's turns.

So my advice is to do it, but just realize the 15 seconds you go backwards will be really bad and you'll probably hate it.

I hate the backwards part, but the rest of the ride is so enjoyable that I go on it repeatedly and just "get through" the backwards section.

Thanks for the play by play. I do like to try to imagine what a ride will feel like, and you just don't get that from youtube videos.

I am building up to big coasters again, after years of not riding. Everest was one I had to ride to work my way up, and I love it. We ride it several times each trip.

Some advise: don't get in the front or back, make sure you are in the middle, it is the most moderate ride experience. They always accommodate me when I make requests. Also, do not put your head against the headrest, lean forward a little. I do this on RnR as well, you feel the vibrations of the ride through the headrest.

It is a fun ride, and if you don't enjoy it, it won't last long, worth at least one ride! Whenever I get on a new one, I just tell myself it will be over soon, at least I can say I rode it!

My DF DD was scared out of her wits, then got off and wanted to ride again! Her last hurdle was ToT, which I practically had to drag her on. She loved that was as well, and now you can't keep her off of any rides!

I'll let my kids sit in front of me…they love being on the front of rides!

This ride is one ride I am thinking I will finally ride in on our March trip. Big Thunder Mountain is my FAVORITE ride at WDW. I've watched the youtube videos so the speed looks fine. I have had problems with vertigo in the past - so that's what concerns me the most - especially the backwards part. I am thinking I will take one Dramamine. I just don't want to get vertigo for the trip. And then I will be screaming a lot - so I don't panic :rotfl2: I find screaming when I am afraid helps with the nerves.

I scream the whole time I'm on Space Mountain! I'm sure I sound like a nut…it's a mix of half scream-half laughing. My kids get a kick out of it!

Yikes!! That does freak me out a bit…what are the odds??!!

HaHa! I am less worried about the backwards part than I am about getting stuck!

I LOVE EE, I think its my favorite ride (its a tough race between EE and Space Mountain) but if you conquered Space Mountain, EE will be a piece of cake.

Really?? I hope so because I do Space Mountain all the time now. I think I don't mind it as much because it is so dark and I can't anticipate what's coming.

I'm going to WDW for the first time in Jan/Feb and EE scares me to death. Aw! Go for it! Nobody is more chicken than me and I think I am going to do it!

Hi all…eight trips and this is the ONE ride I've never tried. I've been on every mountain in the MK, rode RnRC in DHS (Twice! Though I thought I would die!!), rode ToT in DHS (because my DS who was 4 at the time told me it wasn't too scary…Ack!). And the only ride I feel I've yet to conquer is EE. I usually stand and watch my kids ride over and over again and I love seeing them come down that big hill, but it always looks crazy huge in person. I've been watching you tube videos and it honestly doesn't look that bad from the POV videos.

I think I've convinced myself to ride when we go in April, but I may need some encouragement so I won't chicken out when I get there. If you are like me, I would love to hear your story of how you have ridden it and it wasn't that bad. Or you think I should grab a comfy spot one the wall with my sunglasses and do what I've always done?

Thanks :)

Have you seen this video? It really helps show what actually happens in the mountain. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a9F9FdFES-4

I opt for the front row. It's less intense :)

My opinion of the ride is the same as above, but I don't ride it repeatedly. Once a trip is enough for me.

.

I didn't want to quote your whole post yet again, but wanted to thank you profusely !!! for the first ever post I have read honestly explaining the ride.. so many coaster enthusiasts just say :oh it's fun" "you'lll love it! "just try it!" and the POV on utube doesn't really explain how you FEEL. thank you SO much!

The backward portion is terrible.

I knew there was a portion, but was surprised at the length and intensity of it.

ABout 2 hours to recover from that, and it does feel like you go upside down, even though I know you don't.

The rest of my family loves it though.

and another honest report. "the backword portion is terrible" lol. I actually love the way you put this, cause I really want to know what to expect.

I used to ride it once or twice each trip. After our last trip, I'll never ride it again. Thank goodness I wasn't on it, but my son was. The ride broke down and he was stuck on it. this is my biggest fear on any ride. luckilythe only ride I got stuck on was the Dr. suess trolley "roller coaster" at the dark side, that is closed half the time.. we did have to climb down a small ladder, but after listening to the same music for a half hour (ok, maybe 20 minutes) I was fine with that!:rotfl:

but I read a bout a really high ride gettin stuck in vegas. they interviewed a couple and the wife said "my husband thought it would help me get over my fear of heights. and it's only a 3 minute ride"!!!.. that would be my luck

see, I feel kinda guilty.. my husband rides rides with me that he now gets nothing out of, due to his diminishing eyesight... even when we go at night, he sees almost nothing in Haunted mansion..toy story, peter pan. etc yet he will go with me so I can enjoy it. but I try not to do too manyof these dark rides out of consideration. (we haven't done peter pan in a couple years, actually)

but he loves thrill rides and I hate them (despise them.. they scare me half to death) I am terrified of heights. but he would like me to ride them with him since he is tired of riding them alone..

I will never ride rockn roller coaster or rip tide rocket, etc. but I did do TOT once (and hated it) and never tried EE. I do space and mummy at UNI (I really don't like space at all.. I "endure" it.. but I can manage mummy.)

I was thinking maybe I could try EE and try TOT once more. his reasoning is if he can be bored in the dark rides for such a long time, and I can last a few mintues being afraid. (and I am thinking maybe I would rather never ride haunted mansion again rather than die of a heart attack on EE!!!!)

OK, so I am a ride baby. We had gone to WDW like 4 times before I set foot on a ride that seemed "scary" I have now done everything except RNRC.

To put things in perspective, I HATE Space Mountain, Splash Mountain (the big drop is just too intense), but I LOVE Big Thunder Mountain. I feel Like EE is similar to Big Thunder when its moving forward in intensity. And the backward happens so fast that it didnt bother me at all.

I did go on it like 4 times in 20 minutes and got an uncomfortable feeling in my stomach and felt dizzy, but it only happened that once.

Its not so bad. You may love it. Working yourself up is the worst part!

Good luck!!!

It hurt my neck a little, but not as much as Space Mountain. I screamed pretty much throughout this ride. I wouldn't do it again. Mission Space Orange was worse though.

My worst 3 rides:

Mission Space Orange
Space Mountain
ExEverest

I like BTMRR, for comparison purposes

It's not that bad.

I used to be afraid of EVERYTHING. In high school, we went on a high school band trip to Disneyland. I HATED heights as a kid. I remember there being either an INCREDIBLY high staircase or escalator at Universal that we had to walk down and I was terrified.

And so my friends finally talked me into going on the Tower of Terror. I loved it. All I could think was "I've been to WDW so many times and I never went on it?!?" And then they wanted to go on California Screamin. That's where I drew the line. No way. Well, peer pressure kicked in and my crush at the time convinced me. My first upside-down coaster. Loved it.

Fast forward to my graduation. I wanted to go to WDW as my gift - rather than having a party, etc. I went on ToT about 3 times and loved it but couldn't salvage the confidence to do RnR.

On our next trip, like you, I said "I'm doing it." I went on RnR and loved it. I even got my sister to go on and she loved it. It's now our favorite ride.

Long story short.. Expedition isn't bad. Although my fear of heights is gone, I still get a little nervous going up the mountain... The drop is steep and large, but it's not that bad. Going backwards is cool, but keep your head on the headrest - you'll really feel the G-Force!

I am NOT a thrill ride person. The visual of the drop on Everest is pretty darn intimidating, so the first time my family went on it, I opted to stay off with our then 4 year old daughter. (I'm a giver.)

When my Dad got off it, he said he thought I'd like it. He started by saying the drop about the same as the one on Splash Mountain. 30 minutes later, he was telling me the drop was about the same as the one in Pirates. 40 minutes later he told me the drop was about the same as the one in the Tiki Room, and I told him to shut it.

Anyway, my husband told me he really thought I'd like it so I decided to give it a try. When I saw that drop I exclaimed, "Holy crap, I'm not going on that!" (For me, that's strong language.) A really nice family was behind me and all of them, including the children, told me that it's really smooth, that I should try it, that it's honestly fun.

Went on. Really liked it! Yes, thrilling, but pretty smooth. The drop, as I had been promised, looked much worse than it actually was. The visuals were stunning. I'd go on it again.

I'm quite a chicken of RnRC but did do this one. I did kept expecting to feel a big drop but never happened. The backwards I'd agree with the others was the worst part where I had to muffle swearing in front of the kids in front of me, especially with their mother seated next to me.

Just do it and then see how you feel about doing it again :-)
ToT I'm a never again after this trip but given the choice of just the 2 rides I'd do EE again over ToT. For me I do need Dramamine to ride again which I learned from this trip, when I never knew I had motion sickness issues. Otherwise it was a fun ride regardless of the backwards part.

Thanks everyone! Y'all are going to have to wait until April to see if I really got through with it. For right now, I am planning to!!:)
