Beware of I-75 Northbound around Valdosta! The take it from 3 lanes down to one and the wait is over 2 hours!

Then beware just north of Atlanta. They do the same thing and it took over 3 hours to go 30 miles!

I have never seen 75 that crowded and in such a mess. What was GA thinking--lane closures during spring break!

That sounds horrific. So sorry you ran into that. We took that route last year going to Disney because parts of I-40 over the mountains in TN & NC were closed due to landslides. I'm glad they've reopened it one way & partially the other way because we really don't like driving through Atlanta.

My parents live up around Atlanta so I go north on I-75 pretty regularly. The construction around the Valdosta area has been going on for at least the past 2 years. I don't know why it takes that long to do whatever it is they are doing.

Ah....traffic in and around Atlanta....welcome to my nightmare!

Why does it take so long...because they have to stop working while the cops clear away all the accidents?!

We had a gas main break in the little town I work in....had to close a road for 2 hours at 5pm on Friday.....you would think armeggedan had come....and why call 9-1-1 to ask about traffic...GGRRRR!

I-75 N through Georgia has always been bad!!

A couple of years ago on the Sunday after Thanksgiving, once we hit the Georgia border on I-75 we had to drop to 25 mph and never broke 30 until we got to I-20E towards Alabama.

It took us 5 extra hours to get home!!!!!

thanks!

I have been wondering why so many people from the East Coast were now going through Ala instead of Georgia (va I75 or I95) to Florida.

I think you just explained it. I mean I though it would be further and longer away - but the situation you described were worst.

on my trip (this March) I saw lots of Va, Mas - licenses - and I was wondering what they were doing in Ala....

thanks!!!

Last Saturday April 2, our 17-18 hour trip took us 22 hours! Georgia was just horrible! Thank God we'd borrowed a DVD player for the car. I75 was shut down for 3 hours due to a horrible accident just south of Perry. Thankfully we were right at the rest area when it slowed to a stop so we got off and ate from the cooler, the kids ran around, etc. But it was a nightmare!

spiceycat, what was your route through Alabama? We're coming in via Memphis to Birmingham. Had planned to go to Atlanta and down, but may go south from B-ham instead.

If you are going to travel through GA (either way) - take a look at http://www.georgianavigator.com before you leave. They also have some options for texting alerts to you phone. My parents came up through the traffic on Friday and we did on Saturday. They got off 75 and tried back roads (41 or old 41) and we did for a short way. They is really no good way around if want to use 75.

get on I65 - then in Montgomery (this is very fast) - get on I-85 - get off on exit 9 (not 6 that AAA says).

from exit 9 - turn right - this roads dead ends at US 231.

US 231 has lots of nice rest stops. however they aren't the big ones you will see if Florida.

US 231 will take you to Florida and I10.

then I 10 to I 75.

It is longer miles - but I saw a lot of people going this way - so maybe not time wise.

of course if you want to golf on your way to WDW - this is definitely the way.

You can take the short cut to I10 by going down 87, 167, 79 (turn off US 231 in Troy) - but this is a road - not highway.

Pat J, 2 questions: Can you give me a guess as to what the driving time is between Birmingham and I-10 using the route through Dothan you described? Also, coming into Birmingham from Tupelo, what is the state of the interstate construction near Birmingham? Can you recommend a route through Birmingham from that direction?

Thanks tremendously!

I took that route through Dothan in January, and hated it! Because it is through cities and towns your gas mileage stinks.

It takes me 4 hours leaving bhm in homewood - til I get on I 10 in Florida.

yes it is through towns - but believe me it is better now - it use to be 45 mph the ENTIRE time.

now most of it is at 65 mph (you can go 70 to 75 without the state troopers giving you a hard time).

close to Dothan and Troy - it goes to 45 mph. In a Florida there is a couple of places where it goes to 35mph.

the other route - it takes around 3 hours to get to I10 - but you are on I10 longer. (also no rest stops - so Mother HATES this route).

now if you follow AAA route and take exit 6 on I85 you will hate it - because you go around the world before you get to US 231. I have complainted to AAA about that route - but they say it is because of the shopping area.....

Yea and I then asked why the Galleria in bham was not off their routes....

I really think some of the business in Montgomery pay AAA to put the route by their shops....

You can probably do it faster - I have to stop at each and every rest stop until we get to Florida (in Florida they are 30 to 50 miles apart - in Ala 50 to 75 miles apart.) Mothers are fun.... :teeth:
