Hurricanes and DCL

I guess they learned from Matthew not to wait too long to make decisions. Good find.
I'm glad they learned from Matthew, it was stressful finding out less than 2 days prior to the cruise (my family was rapidly refreshing our screens to see if an update was released during Matthew since we had a family member stuck at WDW)
Another question, would all the staff on CC have been evac'd on today's Dream stop? TIA!
The usually keep a skull crew on the island in the storm shelter (with the cat). This is so that clean up can start immediately and status of the island can be relayed quickly

So, questions for all the sailors on this board. I know that they do not want to leave these ships docked during a storm, especially on of this magnitude, but what would they do with them? Head out to the middle of the Atlantic and float around? Port farther north?

Another question, would all the staff on CC have been evac'd on today's Dream stop? TIA!

The ships are safer out at sea so most likely they'll take the ships back out to sea with only the crew to wait the storm out from a safe position.

Right now CC is just outside of the cone of uncertainty. Assuming no significant changes to the path they shouldn't experience more than tropical storm winds. I imagine if the center of such a near-record breaking storm were to aim directly at it they might completely evacuate the island (including the cat of course).

Sorry to those affected by the cancellations.

That is one creepy hurricane.

Very sad about missing out on the cruise this weekend but am so relieved that it is cancelled and we can now focus on boarding up, finding gas / supplies, and being with our family. I've been through every Florida hurricane since Andrew and for me this is the most concerning one since then. I'm used to friends sticking it out but a good portion are planning to drive to Georgia and neighboring areas to avoid this mess, which says a lot.

I applaud Disney for making the right call. Wasn't expecting much after reading about how they avoid cancellations at all costs.

Lots of sadness here tonight. Busy morning calling dvc and JetBlue this morning. Been planning this trip for 18 months and now it's over. Hopefully I'll get the energy to start over.

Can't you just postpone the trip and reproduce a similar schedule? :sad1:

I'm so sorry you're going to miss your trip. I hope you'll be able to reschedule for another one in the very near future and that every little thing will be perfect. Best wishes!

so sorry you're missing your long planned cruise....
is there any way you can do one closer than 18 months from now?

We are fortunate living in Orlando that we dont have to deal with airlines and hotels when stuff likes this happen but it is still sad to miss a planned vacation. Our DD who is 4 thinks we can just go next week instead.

I am SO SORRY for all of you in this position. We've had two Disney cruises cancelled by DCL; but a few months out, not a few days out (dry dock related, not weather related). For those of you who already booked airfare, see if your credit card company can help you with the cancellation or rebooking. When we had to rebook two months out, we could not reuse our original airfare (since we were originally scheduled to sail out of Miami on the Wonder and it changed to out of Galveston on the Magic, so we were flying to different port cities serviced by completely different airlines). It was a royal pain in the butt and DCL attempted to help us but what ultimately helped us was our credit card company; they took the letter from DCL explaining the cancelled cruise and somehow over the phone in a matter of minutes, our credit card company got our money back. This was weeks after my attempts to do so with the airlines! Very frustrating. I hope those of you who have air and may or may not rebook out of the same port city can use this hint. Good luck!!

That is really Nasty! hope it isnt looking anything like that when it gets to Orlando.

no, once it makes land and starts moving across (to get to inland orlando), the intensity goes down...
but those little islands in the middle of the ocean really get blasted when they're hit head on by a powerful hurricane like irma...

Where is the storm shelter located? And what is the cat?

the dream is headed back to castway cay to pick up the employees there..
guess DCL came to the conclusion that this storm is too deadly to risk leaving personnel on the island..
