Hurricane Sandy and East Coast - anyone preparing yet?

It's raining pretty steady and windy here, but nothing really bad yet. DH checked the basement and around the outside of the house - so far everything looks ok.

Long Island here. Lights rains and winds picking up. I have been cooking all morning. I also cleaned and did all laundry. I am just concerned about the power outages. You know how fast laundy stacks up here?
Anyway, hunkering down. I hope all of you are okay.

ETA- Can you believe we got mail today? Really? I feel terrible for the mail people.

My 3 year old heard us talking and is now having a cow that the boardwalk is going to float away. I can't imagine how bad it is flooding there.

Well my work is closed officially closed from 10am today through tomorrow but our leadership is in a teleconference so we haven't officially been dismissed yet!

Wind is whipping now. Lights have been flickering. Just a matter of time.

We just had a FedEx truck roll through the neighborhood... : Yet, they are saying they only want essential workers on the roads. Not to under value FedEx, but, unless they are delivering medical supplies, I think we can wait until after Sandy leaves for our deliveries...

We just rode bicycles on that pier mid-September. But, if that is the worst thing that happens, we should be grateful.

I hear ya. One of the neighbors has bags (not even in a garbage can) at the curb. Do they really think those bags will be there after the storm?
We had the lights flicker twice. I feel like I am playing beat the clock. I am cooking and trying to make sure everything is cleaned up so we don't have dirty dishes.

Just saw that Chicago could experience power outages and effects from Sandy. They were even talking about possible storm surges on some of the Great Lakes. Incredible. I see on radar it's already snowing in WV.

I received an automated call from the director of comm. for harford county a few hours ago. Plus on hcps.org it lists the closings. See if you have a similar website to check.

We didn't do much to prepare. We have city water, so we know we wont lose it.

Even with city water you should have a several day supply of water. With flooding, power outages and downed trees your water may be contaminated and at worst you could have a water line break and have no water at all.

New updates from the Natl Hurricane Center at 11 am ET; the storm has picked up forward speed to 18 mph and is now expected to make landfall between 8-9 pm, about 5 hours earlier than originally predicted.

Unfortunately, the new projection means that landfall is likely to correspond almost exactly with high tide, which is likely to cause the surge to go about 3 feet higher in places on the NE side of the eye.

Be careful, folks; the flooding is likely to be quite nasty.

Living on the Gulf Coast, this is so true. After Katrina, there was lots of damage to the city infrastructure and water and sewer systems were not operational.

Even though we live 12 miles inland, we were still affected by loss of city services.

Never underestimate the power of mother nature.
