Hurricane Sandy and East Coast - anyone preparing yet?

I received an automated call from the director of comm. for harford county a few hours ago. Plus on hcps.org it lists the closings. See if you have a similar website to check.

Ok thanks, we just actually got our automated call. Mary

Even with city water you should have a several day supply of water. With flooding, power outages and downed trees your water may be contaminated and at worst you could have a water line break and have no water at all.

Or the water pumps fail. One of the things that a lot of people never think about is the sewer lift station pumps; if those go you won't even be able to bucket-flush the toilets for very long.

(For the uninformed, if the water system loses power you won't be able to flush your toilets the usual way; you have to gravity-flush them by pouring a bucket of water into the bowl. However, if the sewer lift stations go offline, even bucket-flushing won't work once the pipes begin to back up.)

If you are in the flood zone, fill all of your bathtubs with water -- you will need it.

This is from the National Hurricane Centers 11am update:

"REPORTS FROM AN AIR FORCE HURRICANE HUNTER AIRCRAFT INDICATE THAT
THE MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS HAVE INCREASED TO NEAR 90 MPH...150 KM/H...WITH HIGHER GUSTS. SANDY IS EXPECTED TO TRANSITION INTO A FRONTAL OR WINTERTIME LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM PRIOR TO LANDFALL.
HOWEVER...THIS TRANSITION WILL NOT BE ACCOMPANIED BY A WEAKENING OF
THE SYSTEM...AND...IN FACT...A LITTLE STRENGTHENING IS POSSIBLE
DURING THIS PROCESS.

It's only 1:54 pm and I already blew through my potato chip rations..

Sandy will you just get here.

Actually its pretty boring in Queens right now but they say in an hour or so all hell should be breaking loose.

As of the 2:00PM Weather advisory: Hurricane Sandy is moving NW at 28mph, 110 miles away from Atlantic City, Nj. Winds are at 90mph, and the pressure is at 940mb, The lowest this Coast Has seen. Be safe, Sandy isn't too much longer from making impact on NJ.

Looks like she isn't far away from causing some havoc now.

lmao... no too much on the internet makes me (literally) laugh out loud, but this did.

We have not had much going on here in upstate NY but here's my concern: LEAVES

Picture piles of leaves raked up from a whole neighborhood (piles 3 feet high) and the town didn't pick them up! (***!?)

So with the wind starting up, and only going to get worse, I'm worried about the leaves clogging up the gutters.

We've had flooding from minor rainstorms due to this. :scared1:

My neighbor just lost a big tree. I went out in my yard to check and it just missed my fence.

:rotfl: I'm eating the cookies I got from Trader Joe's yesterday!

Went to the grocery store this morning and I got the last case of water. The shelves were bare! When I passed by that area again a few minutes later there were people fighting about the lack of water :confused3 they were out of bread and D batteries. I have some bread in the freezer that I can thaw out so that's ok. I did some baking last night and have lots of non perishables, things I know that DD will eat (she's so picky!)

It's starting to get really windy here and it's been rainy/drizzly since yesterday afternoon. All the after school programs in our area have been cancelled. I got some things out of my toy storage (things I buy during the year for DD for Christmas/birthday/whatever). some new things to play with will be fun if we need to be inside for the next couple days. DD will be sad if she doesn't get to trick or treat. Fingers crossed that we still get to do that...

The pictures on the dailymail site are intense

Stay safe everyone!!!

The rain is picking up as well as the wind.

I came into work for four hours and will be leaving in ten minutes.

I pray the stores will be open because if im going to be stuck with my family, ill need to go into a food coma.

I just want this to be over.

Oh well. At this point being stuck with my family will be far worse than having no water. I wish I were kidding but they're already starting to get on my nerves.

Not to put a damper on things but after Hurricane Andrew (and yes, it was a cat 5 not a 1/2), we were waterless for 3 weeks and had city water. Fill your tub, just in case, you'll thank me later :)

We lost power for about two hours, it came back on a few minutes ago. There are some trees down in the area, a huge branch fell on my neighbors house.

There is a crane hanging off a building in the city. I was just talking last night to my brother who lives there, and I said those cranes on the buildings were accidents waiting to happen during this storm. Hopefully that will be the only one. The ones on the Freedom Tower make me very nervous.

My dd is mad at me because I won't let her leave the house. "I don't understand why your doing this to me. " - not letting her go to her boyfriends house. I'm ready to go back to work already! lol

Funny...I was coming on here to post something similar. And if we lose power...they will drive me over the edge.

Last half hour in Queens, I would say the wind has doubled in intensity.
Lights flicker every 10 minutes, but so far still able to watch news.

I sent my dh out on a beer run :rolleyes1 PP&L says if we lose power it could be two weeks before they get us restored.. :scared:
