Hurricane Sandy and East Coast - anyone preparing yet?

Yes I'm not far from Bloom. Bloom floods EVERY single time we get something like this... last year it was under 24' YES FEET of water... I wouldn't plan on going to be honest.. we might not even have power yet... we are going to get slammed with 90mph (gusts) winds tomorrow night dropping down to 75mph winds on tuesday morning.. :scared::scared::scared: the wind is actually scarier than the rain this time around.. I think we are only getting 6'-8' I've never been thru something like this before.. I'm freaking out a little bit here.. :scared1:

YIKES!! Thanks for the info.. We are supposed to be at the Bloomsburg Fairgrounds...Let me know if you find out it is underwater!!!

Is Upstate NY out of the clear- for the most part? I know there will be some wind and rain, but not the hurricane type winds a lot of others will get.

Am I reading into this correctly?

I live in Western NY, and while I wouldn't say we are in the clear, we won't feel it like the Mid Atlantic and New England states.

They are talking about a couple inches of rain, gust up to 60 MPH and possible power outages.

After last years event they have canceled classes for both Monday and Tuesday at Bloomsburg Univ. Fingers crossed it isn't as bad as last year.

Federal Government in DC closed tomorrow. I'm kind of shocked. Thought it would be a "liberal leave" day.

UGH..I hope not...I am so nervous about being here in NJ with this storm coming..if I don't have power all week. I will not feel up to going on Saturday...but we are showing someone elses dog...so it makes it tough not to go if the show is on.

YIKES!! I just googled Bloomsburg Fairgrounds flooding...those pictures are unbelieveable!! OK. I guess I will be planning on not going if that is what happened last year!!! Stay safe!!!

Yes the fairgrounds isn't far from the river :rotfl: lets just say the dog show happening doesn't look good ;) If you want to watch on weather.com or something they are in COLUMBIA county not far from Schuylkill County which is where I am... :scared:

On a lighter note, who has already broken into their "Sandy Snacks"? The hubs and I are destroying some goldfish and pretzel slims. I figure that the wind has begun so it's OK to break out the snacks.

They finally cancelled classes at Marymount for tomorrow. We made a last minute run to the grocery store for baby wipes and hand sanitizer, and it was mobbed. Not a bottle of water left on the shelf- luckily we have plenty.

We've also broken into the snacks. It's raining here right now, but not too windy.

Depends on where you mean by upstate.

This is from NOAA

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE CONTINUES TO CLOSELY MONITOR THE
PROGRESS OF HURRICANE SANDY. THE LATEST OFFICIAL FORECAST TRACKS
THE CENTER OF SANDY TOWARD THE CENTRAL OR SOUTHERN NEW JERSEY
COASTLINE LATE MONDAY. HIGH WIND WARNINGS REMAIN IN EFFECT FOR THE
ENTIRE REGION AND A FLOOD WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT FOR MOST OF
EASTERN NEW YORK AND ALL OF ADJACENT WESTERN NEW ENGLAND. AS A
REMINDER...IT IS IMPORTANT NOT TO FOCUS ON THE EXACT CENTER AND
TRACK OF SANDY AS THIS STORM WILL BE QUITE LARGE AND POWERFUL.

FLOODING IMPACTS...RAINFALL COULD BE EXCESSIVE ACROSS PORTIONS OF
EASTERN NEW YORK AND ADJACENT WESTERN NEW ENGLAND...ESPECIALLY
ACROSS THE HIGHER TERRAIN. IF YOU LIVE IN A FLOOD PRONE
AREA...BE PREPARED IN THE EVENT OF A FLASH FLOOD OR MANDATORY
EVACUATION. LISTEN TO YOUR LOCAL EMERGENCY OFFICIALS AND BE
ESPECIALLY ATTENTIVE TO ROAD CLOSURES.

DAMAGING WIND IMPACTS...WIND GUSTS UP TO 65 MPH ARE
EXPECTED IN THE VALLEYS...AND UP TO 75 MPH OVER THE HIGHER
TERRAIN. THESE WIND SPEEDS WILL RESULT IN DAMAGE TO TREES AND
POWER LINES. ITEMS LEFT OUTDOORS MAY BECOME EXTREMELY DANGEROUS
PROJECTILES. ALSO WIDESPREAD POWER OUTAGES ARE EXPECTED.

Well I wish we had a back up generator, but other than that we're as prepared as we can be. I'm going to do a little baking tonight so we have some brownies, muffins, extra little snacks for a few days. School cancelled tomorrow (Norfolk County, Mass), so kids are happy. Although - when the power goes out, and stays out - it gets old really quickly!

School has been cancelled here for Monday and Tuesday. This is a first. We had zero snow days last winter and now we are having 2 hurricane days. It really makes me nervous now. :scared1: We are right in the projected path.

We are stocked with lots of food staples and a large cooler of ice out back with food I can fix on my grill or my gas stove. Baking cookies now to warm up house even more in case we lose power. My biggest fear is the basement flooding.

Super market was insane today. Luckily I have a large supply of bottled water already b/c water was all gone! Ice was close to being gone too!

Blizzard Warnings are now in effect for parts of western Maryland, West Virgina, with 1 to 2 FEET expected in the higher elevations above 3000 ft

Ha...I baked too. Our county (AA) was one of the last to cancel school for tomorrow. My girls were working to get HW done and they had a lot and then we find out school was cancelled. At least Maxwell did it tonight and we won't be woken at 5:10 am with a no school phone call like he likes to do.

Yup. My kids have. I had everything still in grocery bags in our dining room and then put it all away tonight and w/in 5 minutes they had their grubby little hands on it. I bought a 6 pack of Snapple and it's gone already...uggghhh!

Well, signing off and don't know when we'll lose Verizon and/or power, so stay safe everyone!

All Maryland Mass Transit is closed for tomorrow. No buses, light rail or trains.

Federal Government offices in DC are closed and SSA headquarters in Baltimore is closed.

Looks like I'll be staying at home tomorrow.

Wishing luck to all of those north of me. So far we just have some wind & rain, typical nor'easter kind of weather. Schools & work canceled for tomorrow, maybe if it quits raining so much I can head to the beach in search of some shells.
