Hurricane Matthew Closes WDW - Reopens Saturday, October 8th

I haven't read all the messages this morning but the yacht club is running. Characters in the lobby, games going on, and the restaurants are up. We are just finishing a buffet breakfast at Captain's Grill. Housekeeping also stopped by to take trash and towels this morning. We feel well taken care of and it still feels like a vacation.
Also if any CM read this thank you for all you are doing. We have been thanking everyone we see and have seen others do the same.

If I ever have to ride out a hurricane at Disney, I'm doing it at the Yacht Club!

I've seen two different pictures of the lunch here. One was ridiculous and one seemed normal. The one with the sub roll, lots of meat and lettuce etc with a bag of lays, m&ms and an apple I can deal with being $13 and it looked like a Disney sandwich therefore I can handle Disney pricing. The one that looked like it was transplanted from my 80s childhood with white bread and 1 slice of Bologna type meat on it is not something Disney would sell anywhere except under these type circumstances. So it should not have Disney pricing attached to it. That looks like we don't want you to starve and then sue us so here is a complimentary box of food.

I am so glad to see everyone in Florida fared better than expected and that the worst seems to be behind you all. I am however seriously bummed that Southwest cancelled my flight yesterday afternoon, about 40 hours before takeoff! Does anyone know if a cancellation is permanent, or could my flight come back online? I really want to go to Disney!!

What attitude? I was at the same park at the same time. I do find it hard to imagine that some one in the same park at the same time couldn't hear what we heard. It was well communicated to us. I am not saying the other person is incorrect and also said this is a good example of 2 people on the same place at the same time and come back with opposite experiences

I may have been in buildings and rides when these announcements were made and like I originally said if audio is controlled from one central location like it is at MK they should make those announcements over attraction speakers too not just outside in the midways.

But then again the other day I was at the festival center and noticed a whole section of speakers that were not broadcastig area music

We were at Epcot all afternoon and didn't hear anything over any speakers. And we were listening, to report for a media group. I'm just suggesting that perhaps it isn't just taking back two different experiences, but in fact HAVING two different experiences in communication. Much like the call center and social media continuing to say it was no closures, operations as usual, for literally hours after the CMs were saying the parks would be closing.

Many of us are frustrated by the lack of communication (even if we think overall Disney is doing a great job), and it's not simply because we didn't notice that people were trying to tell us something.

ETA: I'm not trying to bicker, I promise :) Just phrases like "don't know how you missed it" were probably unnecessary, when maybe it wasn't there to miss.

I think cancelled is cancelled. The plane and crew are probably nowhere nearby at this point.

I'm a few miles outside of property, and it doesn't look any worse than normal from what I can see out of my windows.

I'm at the Osceola/Orange line, so outside of where the damage was supposed to be bad (I don't think Osceola even has a curfew).

The storm is still here, and the wind still has some strong pickups, but it really just feels like a regular storm

So anyone know anything about this curfew? I have a flight into Tampa late today and was planning to drive to Disney where I have a room (there are no rooms in Tampa :) ) I am a little concerned that I am going to be sleeping in the car if I can't get to Disney.

Glad it's going well. Really concerned for my friends who live in the low coast area of Georgia and South Carolina however!
That's a tough call..... the curfew is still imposed here in Orlando/Orange County. The hurricane is less potent that originally expected, but it's still not really safe to be outside or on the roads. The winds are supposed to get stronger in the next few hours and then calm down a bit. I would also call WDW and make sure you will still have a room available. The resorts are packed with people having to stay longer due to cancelled flights. Our airport is still closed. We evacuated yesterday from Orlando to north of Tampa and right now the winds are increasing and gusts are getting stronger.

ah okay. I had some hope, because my incoming flight is coming from up north and is still scheduled to come in to my home airport (BWI). I might just call the airline to be sure. People are saying I'm nuts because we were at Disneyland Paris 2 weeks ago for the half marathon, but this will be the first year we've missed Food and Wine since 2009. I'm bummed.

I'm in same boat. Sat morning flight is cancelled. Sunday all booked. Debating if we should go Monday, but it brings our trip down to just 2 days instead of 4. Feels not worth taking kids out of school for. Might reschedule whole trip

Hey y'all, I know it looks nice now and we are all YES! but it's not over until 7-9pm tonight at the earliest. WESH is giving gusts up to 57 mph and the gauges show it, and more rain is coming. It doesn't work like tornados or blizzards, it works like power washing or sand blasting where it erodes things over time ripping shingles, making cracks, eroding tree roots. No curfew is lifted, no warnings.
And before checking out anywhere that can keep you, call your hotel to see if they're open to checkins and that you can get there. There is no transportation going from anywhere. :)

For those asking if the park will reopen today, the answer is no. All CMs were told to stay home, some will be without power, dealing with clean up, etc. There's no way. I would assume parks will open as normal tomorrow, perhaps a little late. I would also assume parks will be slammed!

Not saying somebody ate your sandwich but maybe someone ate it? Speaking for me I know that cookie wouldn't have lasted long if I was in your situation. If today was a lot worse than I would've been screwed!
Source: I like cookies
Nope. No one touched it. DH is the only one who eats them.

At SSR we have been told to stay in our room till 7am. Just heard from someone that at PO they can get breakfast at the food court, whiCh involves going outside. I think we have really drawn the short straw at SSR. Individual CMs have been lovely, and we appreciate their commitment, but organisation and communication has been dreadful. Our phone messages with info are arriving a good few hours after they are recorded. We only got the message about the lunchboxes at 6pm last night, despite it being recorded around 1:30.

Here's yet another! We have decent looking sandwiches, but now our chips arent good after being in the fridge with the sandwich, no fruit or dessert or whatever else. I wasn't annoyed by price gouging, per se, but having opened ours I'd suggest they aren't worth $13!

ETA: I'll actually add the pic! ;)

I came home from CSR yesterday, 3 days earlier than planned. The people complaining about the boxed food baffle me. News of the hurricane was all over. It was no surprise. I am surprised Disney offered boxed meals. They don't have to!!! If someone couldn't take time to plan, or to take a couple hours out of their holiday to go pick their own food, then they have no right to complain about how expensive a boxed meal is. It isn't like it took 2 people to put them together. I'm sure it took a lot of planning and man hours. Goodness knows I spent enough vacation time watching the Weather Channel, checking flights, and deciding what to do.

I don't really want to knock disney for how they have handled everything, it appears that mostly they've done a great job. The only thing I have to question is the amount they charged for those bagged meals. I get it, it's disney, and you pay more for food at disney, and I get that these had to be prepared quickly. Considering what's going on down there, IMO they charged way too much for those bags.

Very glad as it could've been far worse. But it also is very meme worthy, Fox News warning of us all dying and our children dying - I open the blinds and see a few leaves on the floor. And people say the media is full of hyperbole :upsidedow

Actually, IF Matthew would have reached the potential that it easily could have it would have been catastrophic. Our FL governor and Orange County mayor said the same thing FOX did about potential deaths.

We live in east Orlando and the sheriff came through our community yesterday afternoon and said to evacuate or give them our name, address and phone number of next of kin. It is always better to be safe than sorry.
