Hurricane Irma?

I mentioned Barbuda so maybe she/he was referencing me... I don't know. Barbuda and Antigua are 30-40 miles away from each other. They have the same prime minister, the same tourist industry, and are usually mentioned together.

BREAKING: PM reported total destruction in #Barbuda. Almost 100% of homes totally destroyed #damaged.Vehicles destroyed. One fatality.#Irma

Everything was fine at Antigua. Where did I talk about Barbuda? Please show me that?

Oh, please...you referenced heresay from the girlfriend in Antiqua ("Irma came and went and we're back to the beach") and then made an analogy, implying the girlfriend story represented what would happen if Irma comes anywhere near Orlando. In my response, I pointed out you had been unfortunately been misled by the heresay, because the apparently out-of-it girlfriend either didn't know or mention Irma had skirted Antiqua - but completely decimated the nearby sister Island of Barbuda.

Just for information - Barbuda is a tiny, tiny island (62 square miles?) of about 1800 people total. Not that it takes away from the devastation.

Also - is anyone actually debating that the coasts of Florida are going to get hit bad? I don't think so.

Geez vacation stress is really bringing out the nit picky worst in people. We all have a COMMON interest, why can't we just focus on that? And crossing our fingers that this thing just blows back out to sea? Wooo sahhhh everyone. Deep breaths.

Really???.... Because I have family in sint martin with no more house or even grass in the yard and a car full of water. I have an extremely hard time believing things are back to normal for anyone.... also the airport is destroyed so no one can get out and Jose is on the way.

Did the girlfriend bother to mention it's sister island of Barbdua was decimated by Irma (killing one and destroying 90% of the structures and vehicles?)

The eye (and therefore the strongest winds) of Irma was 40 miles north of Antigua...not sure that qualifies as skirting when the storm is 400 miles wide.

It seems to me that devastation is all over! We must help every place that's in need . I want to know the best place to help!

After 122 pages, (yes I have read them), I am posting to say to all, please stay safe. Do not minimize or underestimate the power of this storm. I am watching because I used to own a vacation home in the Caribbean and still have friends there. My family runs a charity building homes in the Dominican Republic for needy families, I have relatives in Florida both near the keys and the gulf coast. My properties in the Caribbean survived three hurricanes with "slight" damage...meaning roof tiles lost, all landscaping lost, docks lost, outbuildings lost and beach washed out to sea. These were Cat 3 storms. My property was poured concrete construction. I sold them. I can't deal with the pressure.

One Hurricane, missed hitting us dead on but turned and came up the leeward (not Caribbean facing) side of the island and took out so much they closed the island to tourism for two months.

Please do not take unnecessary risks or fail to prepare just a little. Many posters who have been through hurricanes have great advice. I may live in the Wisconsin but am not immune to hurricanes. Loved the on site suggestions. Great advice from others on what to bring down if you can't cancel. Those with first hand cancellation stories are providing valuable information. The Matthew information is very helpful. By all means, be sure you will be okay alone, in your hotel, for 12 to 24 hours. Who knows?

HEY GUYS LOOK OVER HERE!!

Do any of you who understand the models have a guess what happens further north after several days? My DD and I are scheduled for our annual Cedar Point Halloweekends trip for Sep 15-17. For the past 3 times, no matter what weekend we've picked, we have been blasted by a major storm blowing up from the south. I know many of you have your hands full with immediate decisions -- and this is nothing compared to those in harm's way--- but anyone on the sidelines have any guesses on post landfall track? Ohio? Back out to sea? pA ( where I live?) , northern east coast seaboard?

You're totally ignoring the point that the same system can do both, damage and not damage. No one ever said it was not going to cause any damage anywhere. Did they? I believe the point is that it's possible for Irma to move a distance exactly like the distance from the coast to Orlando and not impact the area significantly. It clearly moved closer to the other island or moved differently in relation to the other island. No one is disputing that it caused that damage. I'm not sure where you think someone did. But why you want to disbelieve someone who is there is beyond me. You are just too much at this point.

We rescheduled and kept everything (free dining, same resort, same room type, no extra cost, but we didn't move to the following week, we just moved it from Sept 8-16 to Sept 12-20.
We are booked Sept 10-14, but I haven't had time to call yet and see what our options are. Hoping to reschedule a few days later like you did since we have flexibility. Driving down from Atlanta, though, so not sure how long we need to wait for it to be safe enough to drive down. Are you flying or driving on the 12th? Glad to hear it worked out just to shift it back a few days for you.....gives me hope!

At this point not really because there is still not enough known about there it's going. I think any of the options you mention could happen at this point. Check again in 24 and 48 hours.

This is very true. Matthew ended up essentially a non event in Orlando after all the worry and concern but it killed over 500 people in other places. All depends on stuff no one will know until it happens.

That is why those having to make decisions find it so difficult.

That would be 100 square miles. It's not even close to the size of Florida.
You are correct, her comparison was still flawed and the the semantic game about Barbuda not being originally mentioned doesn't work. Bottom line: the attempts to diminish the potential impacts of this storm are getting increasingly desperate.

One lesson I learned while at WDW during Matthew last year -- it's amazing how many people on property remain blissfully in the "Disney bubble" in the days leading up to an event like this. We live on the coast of South Carolina (currently taking a break from doing a hurricane prep photo inventory of my house), and we know what a hurricane can do. So we planned ahead last year -- went to the grocery store and bought supplies, got sandwiches from Earl of Sandwich, got breakfast items, etc. I really think we were in the minority -- a lot of people were shocked when the parks closed, they had no supplies, and they ended up standing in line for overpriced sandwiches for hours.

All this to say -- it's very easy to get lost in the magic. That's part of the appeal of a Disney vacation. Traveling in the days before and during a hurricane means you lose that luxury -- you either have to stay on top of the news, or you get caught unprepared.

NOT NEGATING but to be fair. It is a very tiny island, mostly undeveloped - most have never even heard of it. Basically one small town with 1600 people and likely not built to same standards we are used to. The town is also on the west side the would have take the brunt of the winds coming around the island full of water. Winds were likely close to the 185 mph whereas they are expected to drop to 145 by time it gets to FL.

Terrible results and we should fear it here as well, but the results there can not be compared to FL.

Well ............ we don't all have a common interest, but most do. And sadly this thread keeps getting derailed .... we need to either use the ignore button or do not respond. If we do eventually it will stop.

We all just need to agree that Wonder Whisper is a troll, and ignore them as such.
