Hurricane Irma?

The destruction in Barbuda is zero indicator of damage that will/can happen in the U.S.

You really can't compare destruction to an undeveloped tiny area that doesn't have near the construction and building codes we have.

Not downplaying the storm but it's not likely to be just wiping out everything in its path

It is so sad what happened in those islands.

But people need to realize these are not large islands by any means.

the entire island of Barbuda is 62 mi²

for comparison the city of Orlando is 113.7 mi²

The state of Florida is 65,755 mi²

... Again these numbers are just for comparison.

Universal charged you a $200 fee? Sorry, but I would of spoken to a manager and fought that. It's a major hurricane and Universal parks is a billion dollar industry. They don't need to make money off of people from cancellation fees due to a MAJOR hurricane. Not acceptable.

Yeah, unfortunately. It also takes 3-4 weeks for a refund from them as well. I guess I should've been more upset about it and spoken to a manager, but honestly I was more upset at prospect of being at work on Monday instead of vacation. I have traveled down there this time of year quite a bit thru the years and this is first time ever canceling due to weather. Years ago, we were at Nick Hotel when Wilma hit (I think it was Wilma--2005 timeframe maybe?) and it really didn't phase us.

The guy I spoke with could tell I was pretty defeated with the cancellation, and he ended up being super nice and supportive saying I was doing the right thing. Said if it was his vacation on same dates, he'd cancel as well.

Also, the guy I spoke with at the Swalphin was unbelievably nice as well. He was able to add the two days to the beginning of reservation at Dolphin and adjust our Swan stay.

Considering the pure call volume these folks have been getting, they've been very personable and nice, so that was/is greatly appreciated.

My guesstimate:

If the storm continues on the path it's projected to go, I'd expect Orlando to get tropical storm force winds and rain. Again, just going off the current projections, but I don't see Orlando experiencing anything devastating. If you didn't know there was a hurricane out there you'd probably just think it was a nasty storm.

Hope for the best and prepare for the worst.

Hopefully anyone still planning on evacuating heads out soon and doesn't get stuck on the road. I'll be hunkered down in the same city I rode out Hurricane Charley in 2004

Just drove north from WDW to Atlanta after 5 days at WDW. Traffic was horrible. What should have been a 6.5 hour trip turned into a 9 hour trip. Many are evacuating FL already, even though if it goes through FL, it's not projected until Sunday.

Last year, we were at WDW during Matthew. This was our experience. We stayed at AKL. Parks, all restaurants, and Disney Springs closed Thurs at around 4:00-5:00 pm and remained closed Friday during the day. Regarding food, some restaurants opened with a limited menu on Friday evening. Parks reopened Saturday. We had water and snacks in our room (drove down and brought them). AKL set up the Boma buffet and sat everyone waiting for dinner at Boma or across it at Jiko, but it took a while, and it was clear that they were using all the CMs they could find, even if they usually did not work certain positions. Our server usually worked at JiKo and tried to charge us for my then 9-year old DD as an adult ($42). I think we waited around 90 minutes (were given a pager; sat in the lobby). We also had a breakfast buffet on Friday.

Guests could not leave the resort to go outdoors until Friday afternoon. Safety is their priority. CMs slept at AKL. There was entertainment at the lobby - bingo, even characters came by. Those in resorts where they would need to head outside to reach lobby and restaurants, had to stay in their rooms. Info was hard to come by. There wasn't a way to find out basic information. You had to wait at guest services to ask (For example, to find out that Boma was going to serve guests.)

If you needed to shorten your park ticket days, guest service at the resort could do it and issue a refund.

We were refunded for the MNSSHP tickets for the parties cancelled.

Overall, Disney did a great job at keeping everyone safe, but we did lose a day and a half of vacation. Yes, we were at Disney, but it wasn't what we had planned.

That's my quess, too. I am operating under the assumption that the party on Sunday night will be cancelled and Monday will see the parks closed. If those don't happen, bonus.

The unrefunded was from a universal package or just the hotel?

Did the girlfriend bother to mention it's sister island of Barbdua was decimated by Irma (killing one and destroying 90% of the structures and vehicles?)
She did say the were lucky because they didn't have the eye pass over them. I wasn't saying the storm wasn't bad. I was just showing surprise that it blew through so quickly and how well her hotel held up after seeing the storm images over Antigua

I can't imagine that taking 8 hours. We drive from Manning SC to Disney in right around 6 hours, and the same going back.

Well according to google maps manning Sc to WDW is 419 miles and from my house to WDW is 480 miles. And going through a major city I live northeast of atl.
