After 122 pages, (yes I have read them), I am posting to say to all, please stay safe. Do not minimize or underestimate the power of this storm. I am watching because I used to own a vacation home in the Caribbean and still have friends there. My family runs a charity building homes in the Dominican Republic for needy families, I have relatives in Florida both near the keys and the gulf coast. My properties in the Caribbean survived three hurricanes with "slight" damage...meaning roof tiles lost, all landscaping lost, docks lost, outbuildings lost and beach washed out to sea. These were Cat 3 storms. My property was poured concrete construction. I sold them. I can't deal with the pressure.
One Hurricane, missed hitting us dead on but turned and came up the leeward (not Caribbean facing) side of the island and took out so much they closed the island to tourism for two months.
Please do not take unnecessary risks or fail to prepare just a little. Many posters who have been through hurricanes have great advice. I may live in the Wisconsin but am not immune to hurricanes. Loved the on site suggestions. Great advice from others on what to bring down if you can't cancel. Those with first hand cancellation stories are providing valuable information. The Matthew information is very helpful. By all means, be sure you will be okay alone, in your hotel, for 12 to 24 hours. Who knows?
