Off Topic!!

Not that it really matters much if I go off topic on my own thread, but just to warn anyone who doesn't really want to read anything non-Disney food related...


We finalized our plan for the trip we're taking to Vegas this year - we're going to be staying at Mandalay Bay April 20-25 and are we ever hungry! Right now we're going to try to eat at the following places:

Red Square (Russian - at Mandalay)
Rum Jungle (Carribbean - at Mandalay)
AquaKnox (Seafood - at Venetian)
L'atelier (French - at MGM)
Isla Mexican Kitchen (Mexican - at Treasure Island)

We also are planning on stopping in at the Burger Bar and House of Blues - both also at Mandalay Bay. And thanks to Cass (love ya, babe!) we will be making a pilgrimage to the Hilton to see the Star Trek Experience! And I know that our dorkiness won't be fully unleashed until we pull up a chair at Quark's bar and order a freaky drink.

So, anyone have any thoughts on our choices? Anyone here wanna see food reviews from someplace other than Disney? I wonder if I need to start my own blog ...

3. Another great dinner place, a little more casual, is Mon Ami Gabi at Paris. I know Paris is a long walk from Mandalay, but this place is worth it.

My husband and I try to go to Vegas as many times as possible. Great food town!

Red Square (Russian - at Mandalay) - Great Drinks and the place is amazing to look at! Cool ice bar to place your martini on to stay cold!

Rum Jungle (Carribbean - at Mandalay) Good food, great drinks and if you eat dinner here your club entrance is free! Woman's room is larger then men's so the men actually have to wait!


AquaKnox (Seafood - at Venetian) Beautiful place, OK Seafood, OK service.

L'atelier (French - at MGM) WOW! Joel Robuchon's place. Haven't been but want to go. How could it be bad!?

Isla Mexican Kitchen (Mexican - at Treasure Island) _haven't been!

We loved the Burger Bar, fun concept, good burgers, yes they are more expensive then McD's but it's great. If you are up go early.

The best meal I have ever had in my life hands down was at Delmonico's at the Venetian! We did the chefs table with friends with wine pairing, you get your own sommelier and a private room with a glass window over looking the kitchen. The food is VERY meat intensive but SO good! I have eaten in the regular dinning area twice and always had a fantastic experience.

Emerils Fish House at MGM is great also.

Bouchon at the Venetian is outstanding!

I talked to my best friend and she had some recommendations for the Star Trek thing/Quark's bar:

Stay away from the Romulan Ale. It's basically just Blue Beer, and not that tasty.

She highly recommends these drinks:
Vulcan mind meld and Warp core breach

And says that they are quite tasty, especially when combined with:
The Wrap of Khan - which is, as you guessed, some sort of sandwich.

She said not to joke around with the Kligon waitresses, as they take their jobs seriously. Ahem.

Brenda, I would love to see reviews from Vegas! The only time I have been was 1986 when I was 18. Not the most fun when the whole family, except for me, got the stomach flu for the whole trip. So the only place I have eaten in Vegas was one of the dining rooms in the Hilton, where we stayed, and the Burger King farther down the strip! I think I just lived on See's candy for 3 days!

Yep, I'm definitely here. I think I hang out more on the food boards than the trip report boards. My vacations tend to revolve around food, albiet the cheap, good versions. I live vicariously through these folks that go to these high-end spots. Someday, when I'm not a student, I may have money again. (Who am I kidding? My future career in academia is certainly not known for money!)

I have had frog legs once, and seem to remember they tasted like chicken (doesn't everything?). Mostly, I thought they looked like the bottom half of a Barbie doll!

I think I've had frog legs once. They were all right but there just wasn't enough meat on those little things to justify the effort. It's sort of like crab legs. I love their flavor but it's so much effort getting to them for so little reward that I end up getting frustrated. My mom said I was the same way with pacifiers. She'd try to give me one but I just wouldn't have anything to do with it. If there wasn't something coming out of that nipple, I didn't want it!

What I find entertaining about all of these upscale places is that they often use food that I wouldn't necessarily consider 'upscale'. I've eaten everything from possum to squirrel to frog legs to fresh crayfish to rabbit. Everything I had was very fresh and homemade. I can't imagine paying the prices for those items and not feeling cheated. Yeah, I'm odd.

I'm going to Vegas too! It's at the start of March for a conference but I'll definitely be there. I will not, however, be dining at those very interesting establishments. In fact, we've decided (based on the cheapovegas site that's already been linked) to sample the highly ranked and cheap buffets all around. Oh yes, we shall eat like kings - Kings of the Hill. I'll let you know which were worth the effort and which weren't.

We're actually staying off the strip as I'm a curmudgeon and dislike noise and bright lights. (It's also only $60 a night.) Gold Coast, here we come!

Hi Brenda! Even if you don't eat there, you must check out Aureole's in Mandalay. We celebrated our 10th anniversary dinner there and the wine selection - sigh - the wine selection is incredible. There's this four-story high tower filled with wine where women on pulleys swing about to retrieve your choice. They are called Wine Angels.

Too cool and so Vegas!! The food is amazing as well. Have a great time!

Hey hey hey! I just wanted to thank everyone for their Vegas suggestions and tips and ideas and links ... I'm in non-Disney vacation planning heaven. If I know me at all, that list of restaurants will change 21 more times in the next three months.

I went to Vegas once a few years back and it was the cheapest vacation in the world, for me. I bought a package with airfare, it was my first flight.

Since I do not drink nor gamble and have a high roller sister who happened to be visiting at the same time who got us free tickets to shows I had a blast.

I booked tickets to La Cage and my dh and the husband of my next door neighbor hid behind us in fear of the 'ladies' sitting on their laps. I loved the show!

The food was cheap back then and a lot of the spectacular shows were new and free for just walking from hotel to hotel.

I cannot wait to see BENDA does Vegas.
