Huh??????

Salmonella didn't come from the tomatoes themselves, it likely was caused by tomatoes that had been contaminated themselves. Think of a glass of water- no salmonella...but squeeze a little raw chicken juice in there and you've just exponentially increased your chances of getting some nasties.

Hey, it happens. What's nice is that it happens rarely. And it usually happens with raw or undercooked food (since the bacteria are killed by high, prolonged heat).

Remember, it's in Disney's best interest to keep YOU healthy- a sick customer is an unhappy customer is a customer who's not spencing and less likely to come back.

You should be no more scared than if you eat out locally or probably even less scared than eating in your own home.

You could have bought the tomatoes from the same company at your grocery store and come up sick. When raw chicken comes in contact with veggies or another food you eat raw the bacteria is passed along.
If you cook the chicken you kill the bacteria, but the veggie is still contaminated.
If I worried about it all the time I would never eat out,or eat at all for that matter.

I would try not to worry. I'm sure they do purchase a lot of prepackaged food, but I (naively) like to believe that most companies try to have safe food harvesting and packaging procedures so that the food is not contaminated.

With this particular outbreak, they probably wouldn't have even noticed except for that there happened to be a gathering of transplant victims there at the time. These were people who could catch things that most of us can't. Salmonella is one of those things that you have to really be exposed to a certain concentration of the bacteria before you get sick. Unfortunately, some people can tolerate lower concentrations because of their ages or health status. Most of us would have eaten the same tomatoes and been just fine.

I'm sure that Disney does everything they can to avoid these types of scandles. A bad outbreak of food poisoning can be detrimental to a company, and they know it. Jack in the Box came very close to going out of business after the e coli thing. They don't want people to stop going to WDW because they're afraid to eat there.

Just asked dh who is a chef and he said it could have been picked up from the soil, from the person who picked the tomatoes or from the packing plant. This could have happened anywhere and was not related to Disney. Disney's food and beverage dept has some of the highest standards in the world for cleanliness. If you are really worried just don't eat anything raw. Dh also says that probably the safest place to eat right now is Disney as they are going to be extra villigant on keeping everything clean

Nah - that doesn't scare me. Already had food poisioning (E coli) and I lived through it. You gotta' go somehow. And what a way to go...on good ol' Disney food. LOL

Seriously, it could happen anywhere...no way to be 100% safe unfortunately.

Well-I'm going down for a week on 9/28 and am eating every meal at Disney. What happened had absolutely nothing to do with them.
Sounds like you might be better off never eating out again---.

Goodness NO! That could have happened anywhere, including your own home! We went in August, ate all but one meal at the parks, and all came home perfectly healthy.

Also, you have to remember, those who got sick were transplant patients who are on medications to suppress their immune systems so they don't reject the organs, thereby making them more suseptible. It is unlikely a healthy person would have even been bothered by it.

Not only that, but the problem was not in the prepartation practices at WDW, but in the preparation practices at the plant where the Roma Tomatos were packaged. Unfortunately, no amount of washing was going to remove all traces of the Samenella.

Go, eat, enjoy, and for goodness sakes, don't worry about it!

BTW, I have had 3 cases of food poisoning myself... none from Disney, and I don't let it bother me! If you are concerned, please call and ask to speak to the chefs at the particular restaurants in which you are interested. And, if you are really worried, eat at only full service restaurants where the food is individually prepared.

I too have been hospitalized with food poisoning, but I refuse to let that spoil my enjoyment of restaurant food, imparticularly at WDW!

Have a great trip and be careful what you eat!

I'm half afraid to eat out at all. Today at Wendy's an employee sneezed on our tray......come on!!! Cover your mouth. It could happen anywhere and does. I've gotten sick a few times from eating out and once in mexico from eating salad washed in water we think, we were so careful! Disney serves so much food if you think about it, it's a wonder we've only heard of this one time.

Just make sure you have health insurance or that you are able to pay upfront. (you get a 40% discount) I know from experience. We spent 2 days at Celebration Health on our last visit. DD had food poisioning of some sort. She ate some improperly cooked grilled chicken, I think. (not in Disney)

This particular salmonella outbreak did absolutely nothing to change my mind about loving to eat at WDW. It was not related to WDW's food preparation or handling.

Not at all! My DW and I are going Nov. 10 - 17th and we are looking forward to visiting our favorite places and trying some new Disney restaurants, too. This will be our 12th trip (I think -- lost count somewhere along the line) and I've never gotten ill from Disney food. Gained weight? Oh yeah! Ate too much? Without a doubt! Gotten sick? Never!

I'm not scared! I agree with the others and will come home weighting more that I did whenI left. Actually looking for to a burger @ Beaches & Cream and I eat them med rare.

I'm not concerned in the least. This was by far the exception to the rule, and think of the thousands of meals Disney serves daily then remember they've been doing this for years. Yes, they have more restaurants now, but the point is that this hasn't been a reoccuring problem. It's not in their best interest to be lax about food handling, and this could've happened anywhere.

MY DH may say the same about me but it is not worth getting sick over. If something doesn't taste good I will not eat it. I wash all my fruits and veggies even watermelon ect. Wash all my meats except hamburger (I just cook it to death); however , I am not afraid to eat in WDW those people were transplant patients weren't they?

Wash your hands before you eat!! We never have second thoughts about WDW restaurants. However I'm a stickler about reminding my family to wash before a meal. Just think about how many people have touched that handrail at Big Thunder, etc..
